Scotland's Laura Muir, fresh from breaking Dame Kelly Holmes' British record on her last appearance, breezed into the 1500m semi-finals, taking her heat easily to go through as third best in 4:06.53.

The Milnathort 23-year-old ran 3:57.49 at the recent London Anniversary Games to break Holmes’ 12-year-old record and was in complete control during the the final heat which was run at a quicker pace than the previous two.

British team-mate Laura Weightman had to rely on a fastest loser spot to advance, though, as she finished seventh in her heat in 4:08.37.

In the first heat, Ireland’s Ciara Mageean progressed with comfort, clocking 4:11.51 behind Ethiopia’s world record holder and world champion Genzebe Dibaba.
