English Premier League roundup: Hernandez goal enough to see United scrape past Everton

MANCHESTER United fended off spirited Everton to secure a much-needed 1-0 win at Goodison Park and partly atone for their 6-1 humiliation at the hands of Manchester City.

Javier Hernandez side-footed in Patrice Evra’s cross in the 19th minute to put Sir Alex Ferguson’s men ahead. A point would have been just reward for David Moyes’ side but they were unable to find a leveller despite Leighton Baines hitting the bar with a first-half free-kick.

Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez showed signs of forging a potent strike partnership as Liverpool strolled to victory over West Brom at the Hawthorns.

A Charlie Adam penalty and Carroll’s third goal of the campaign confirmed Liverpool’s superiority as they climbed into fifth spot.

After eight minutes Suarez was bundled into by Jerome Thomas, referee Lee Mason pointed to the spot and Adam put Liverpool ahead. Carroll made it 2-0 after 45 minutes when he clipped wide of the advancing Ben Foster.

Under-pressure Blackburn Rovers boss Steve Kean saw his hopes of a much-needed victory dashed as Norwich came back from two goals down to secure a 3-3 draw at Carrow Road.

Clearly lifted by their midweek Carling Cup win over Newcastle, Rovers had taken the lead thanks to a Junior Hoilett goal on the stroke of half-time, but Norwich levelled through Steve Morison seven minutes into the second half.

Two goals in three minutes from Yakubu and Chris Samba looked to have given the visitors a priceless win, but Paul Lambert’s side showed their resilience by hauling themselves back into the game through Bradley Johnson before a stoppage-time penalty by Grant Holt.

Sunderland twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with visitors Aston Villa. Stiliyan Petrov opened the scoring for Alex McLeish’s men with a 20-yard shot before Connor Wickham netted from the edge of the box. Richard Dunne headed Villa back into the lead five minutes from time, but with just a minute left Stephane Sessegnon rose to nod the ball into the net.

Swansea piled the pressure on Bolton manager Owen Coyle with a 3-1 win over a visiting side reduced to ten men when Ricardo Gardner saw red early in the second half.

Moments later Joe Allen put Swansea ahead and a Scott Sinclair penalty made it 2-0 before a Danny Graham own-goal reduced the deficit. However, Graham atoned at the other end by adding a third goal for the home side in stoppage time.

Bottom side Wigan were unable to capitalise on Bolton’s defeat as they went down at home to Fulham.

Clint Dempsey fired the London side ahead four minutes before half-time and Moussa Dembele sealed the three points in the 86th minute.
