Iranian fury over nuclear scientist’s assassination

Thousands of mourners chanted “Death to Israel” and “Death to America” during the funeral of a nuclear scientist yesterday

The assassination of Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan has brought calls in Iran for retaliation against the US and Israel.

Tehran accuses both of assassinating Mr Roshan in a bomb attack this week, as part of a secret operation to disrupt Iran’s nuclear programme.

Mr Roshan, a chemistry expert and director of the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran, was killed when two assailants on a motorcycle attached a magnetic bomb to his car in Tehran on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, it has been announced a nuclear agency team from the United Nations will visit Iran later this month after Tehran indicated it is ready to discuss allegations it is involved in secretly developing nuclear weapons.

There have been suggestions from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that such a trip could happen, but this is the first time Iran seemswilling to take part in such talks.

The officials will visit Tehran on 28 January.
