No moral case

Joy Wolfe (Letters, 2 February) states that Israel has an exemplary record in the moral behaviour of its defence forces. I beg to differ. The reality on the ground vividly illustrates how Israel disdains the sanctity of life, violates international humanitarian law and thrives on violence.

Which Israel is it that has that exemplary record? Is it the Israel that killed the American activist Rachel Corrie by bulldozer while she was protecting a Palestinian home from demolition in Rafah? Is it the Israel that killed the British student Tom Hurrendel while he was shepherding Palestinian school children to safety in Gaza? Is it the Israel that built an apartheid wall which snakes through Palestinian lands, cutting off children from their schools, and farmers from their orchards? Or is it the Israel that continues to build illegal Jewish settlements on annexed Arab territories whose primary objective is to stifle the establishment of a contiguous and viable Palestinian state? Such actions do not generate peace. They breed indignation, anger and war among the people with whom Israel seeks to make peace.
