Anger as plan to mark Glen Coe massacre is hit by 'bad weather'

CLANSMEN are up in arms after organisers decided to cancel a ceremony to mark one of the darkest moments in Scotland's history, the Glen Coe massacre.

In previous years, about 50 clansmen gathered in Glen Coe on 13 February for a requiem Eucharist service at St Mary's Episcopal Church and a march to the granite Celtic cross which commemorates the fallen at Upper Carnoch.

However, the Clan Donald Society of Edinburgh has called off the ceremony due to "extreme weather conditions".

Lochaber historian Iain Thornber has dismissed the decision as "arrant nonsense".

He said: "The Clan Donald Society can do what it wants, but it does not have the monopoly on remembering the fallen at the Glen Coe Monument on the 13 February."

About 30 people are now due to attend the revised event.

In 1692 Campbell soldiers enjoying the MacDonalds' hospitality killed 38 clansmen, including the chief.
