CORNERSTONE Church in Texas is one of America's so-called megachurches, the size and shape of an aircraft hangar. The 5,000-strong congregation drives from miles around to hear the Good News.
Afterwards they tuck into sizzling meat and listen to a young Christian rock group as they belt out tunes praising the Lord. Flipping a burger, one grey-haired teacher in a polo shirt and shorts says that when you have God in your life, election choi
ces become simple: "I let the pastor do it."

The congregation tends to follow the pastor's instructions, and at the moment those are likely to recommend voting against Republican front runner John McCain as part of a conservative rebellion threatening to derail his campaign.

Ever since the Moral Majority burst onto the scene in the Seventies, the Christian Right has been a core component of the Republican Party. It is a movement burning with indignation at the thought that McCain may be the next president.

"We've got a party that's in open rebellion right now," said Richard Viguerie, a hardline conservative and author of Conservatives Betrayed. "We feel betrayed going back over many years."

On a long list of issues, the centrist McCain is at odds with the Christian Right. He tolerates gay marriage, supports research on human embryos and opposes tax cuts, torture at Guantanamo Bay and the teaching of creationism in place of science in schools.

His support for an amnesty for illegal immigrants, and his call for laws on climate change and restrictions on campaign finance, mean McCain has failed in most of the things cherished by conservatives.

"McCain is probably one of the most hated figures in the Republican Party," said Philip Klein, a columnist on the American Spectator. "I get e-mails from people who call him McPain. Over the last seven years, on issue after issue, he has stuck his thumb in the eye of conservatives."

McCain opposes the very idea of religious fundamentalists getting involved in politics. He once branded Jerry Falwell, founder of the Moral Majority, an "evil influence" on the party.

To most observers, the rebellion by the Christian Right might not seem to matter. With the support of the mainstream secular wing of the party, McCain has amassed nearly two-thirds of the 1,100 delegates he needs to secure the Republican nomination.

The candidate of the Christian Right, Mike Huckabee, is far behind – although he last night insisted he was staying in the race. And, with Mitt Romney dropping out last week, McCain has a clear run on the nomination.

But McCain's problem will come later. Last week, 14 million Democrats cast a vote in the primaries, compared with just eight million Republicans.

After the multiple failures of the Bush presidency, the country is swinging towards the Democrats. To have a chance at the White House, McCain will need every wing of his own party to get behind him.

Instead, the right are lining up to attack him. Rush Limbaugh, who has a conservative radio show with an audience of millions, said McCain may "ruin" the Party. Ann Coulter, whose right-wing website is standard reading for conservatives, has gone further, urging Republicans to vote Democrat on the basis that this will give her party four years to organise itself around a genuine conservative leader. And on Friday the high priest of the Christian Right, James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, endorsed Huckabee.

Knowing he needs conservative voters to have a chance in the November election, McCain last week braved the brickbats of the annual Conservative Political Action Committee, a body he ignored last year, insisting he had the credentials.

He told the audience he had changed his mind about an amnesty for illegal immigrants, saying a border fence must first be completed. This was greeted with a chorus of boos.

McCain's problem is that he has spent years making a name for himself by treading the centre ground, and now conservatives don't believe he is serious. They are demanding he appoint key conservatives to his campaign staff to prove his sudden conversion is for real.

However, McCain dares not do this for fear of alienating the party's secular mainstream. The one ace up his sleeve is Iraq. While Democrats have called for an immediate withdrawal, McCain, a Vietnam veteran, said US troops must stay "100 years" if necessary to grapple with terrorists. This has convinced some hardliners to support him, if only because the Democratic alternative is so much worse.

I think if the Democrats pick Obama and the right does this, I guess that McCain should prosper by picking up disgruntled democrats.

I think the Christian Right have possibly they missed the sands shifting from under them. Their President Royally failed and I guess many in the GOP want to get someone competent again and become a political party rather than an ideology.

I worry that Obama has little substance and the way that all the losers the Democrats picked last time out have all cuddled up to him, like he is one of their own!

the article above mentions Richard Viguerie saying that there's dissatisfaction among 'religious conservatives'. It does not say that Viguerie supports Ron Paul. The implication of the article is that Viguerie supports Huckabee, yet he does not.

In Texas, Tennessee and other southern states there is a phenomenon of the churches getting involved in politics, mostly supporting pro-war, Israel idolators, NAZI-type Republicans. Yet IMHO the bible does not really support their brand of politics. The book of Jeremiah (chapter 11) says specifically that the old covenant with the jews was broken by the jews and that it is no longer valid. Jesus spoke strongly against that covenant in the 4 gospel books matthew mark luke & john. Yet many of these 'Dominion'-type christians idolize & worship Israel. and why do they love war so much? Jesus spoke against war and that he came for all the world's people without prejudices. The dominion type christians openly advocate killing muslims simply because they're muslim. The Texas pastor John Hagee has called for pre-emptive nuclear war against Iran.

as the bible prophesises - these southern churches & other dominion christians are the 'fallen-away' church that appears during 'end-times'. They are very powerful, it is unfortunate.

McCain and even Romney are the acceptable face of the Republican Party, it's just a pity that McCain didn't get the nomination instead of Bush 8 years ago we would have had a very different presidency.

However I don't think he has a chance against either an Obama Presidential race or a Clinto one and absolutely no chance against an Obama/Clinton dream ticket or even Clinton/Obama.

The political influence of the American Christian Right has damaged America and subsequently the Western World with their brand of right wing Christian fundamentalism which is every bit as bad as it's Islamic counterpart.

I tell you that McCain & Romney both are as pro-war as Bush. even Obama & Clinton are pro-war. The only one left in the race that is anti-war is Ron paul. Paul has geared back his campaign dramatically in that he won't spend many resources on it any more. He does this to focus on re-election to congress.

Wally #5 Read further on in Jeremiah, 23:3-6; 32:36-44; 33:19-26 (written pre-exile to Babylonia); Ezekiel 36:37-38; 39:25-29; Malachi 16:18; and, especially,Jesus' words in Matthew 5:17, 18. The Israelies were not forever abandoned by God; the Gentiles were added to the eternal family.Jesus did not speak against the covenant with the Jews; He said that they, and all humans, had proved they couldn't live by it---that is why Jesus came.

Imagine being so completely brainwashed, utterly removed from reality and placed under hynosis to the point that you would permit your pastor to take certain percentages of your salary and make your political decisions for you!
Seeing grown men and women in a trance like state, heads cocked back, eyes closed and hands palms up whilst whisepring "praise jesus" has to be the most frightening and dangerous thing that takes place in our world today!Their infected minds are vulnerable to the point that they detest homosexuals, they detest any teaching that does not involve the soul creator theory, they detest people who abort even when its a rape victim who aborts, they detest other religions, they infect the minds of their young with their religious bile, thus disrespecting the childs right to choose. These religious states and communities in America are so dangerously infected that a compassionate, family loving, peaceful person could disclose that he does not believe in god and in an instant feel the wrath of the community to the point that he would need to flee in order to save his life!
In the bible, god is responsible for 2.6 million deaths, whereas the devil is credited with 12! That says it all

You hit the nail on the head! These Christian fundamentalists are no different from the Muslim fundamentalists, its just that the Christian fundamentalists live in a peaceful world, whereas the others live in chaos! Chaos of their own making mind you......
Nevertheless, both are as bad as eachother, and neither can be trusted!

Abiding in #8 - the only feedback I can give you is to ask you to read Galatians 3:29

"Galatians 3:29 And if ye [be] Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise."

you're fundamentally mis-understanding the entire christian message. Those verses you quoted were not meant for the modern state of Israel, but to the people who accept Jesus.

This is my main point - that the dominion christians of the American south (& elsewhere) are idolizing Israel because their preachers tell them to. and they are wrong to do so. they are supporting war & death and calling it life.

The main point of the article above is true that many American christians feel very betrayed by George Bush & the Republicans. Many leaders classified as 'evangelical' are now completely anti-war and anti-Bush as well. Richard viguerie quoted in the article is against all the republican leaders other than Ron Paul. Ron Paul has done very well, he's actually finished 2'nd in 3-4 states. Yet he's rarely mentioned. At the debates he doesn't get much time to talk even. The people are fooled into thinking that he's not one of the choices.

This fellow Huckabee is in reality no different from McCain or Bush in that he backs endless war for peace. He backs the NAZI-style legislation of the Patriot act, military commissions act and such. he backs the globalist treaties and the debt & usury-based money creation system.

It does not matter if the new President is left or right wing.

He or she will still have to obey the Israeli Prime Minister and carry out the will of the people of Israel.

The American President is only a figurehead whose continued existance is tolerated by Israel in order to fool the American People into believing that America is a sovereign, independent and self-governing country!

Thorr is correct in 26 where he says that it does not matter if the new president is right or left, republican or democrat. As the presidents today are puppets. TheWitness in 27 is correct also in saying that typically when the general election comes it will be 1 candidate's job to win and the other candidate's job to lose. The candidate designated by the people who rule us to lose will frequently do or say very stupid things in public to facilitate this purpose. although, I don't know for sure who the designated winner & loser are in this year's election. It seems possible that Clinton will be the winner & mccain will be the designated loser in the general election.

When you watch this US election process (& many in the world are so interested in it) what is on display is the failure of mankind to rule over himself. although we are only watching the US system and only 5% of the world's people live under that system, it is symbolic of mankind's failure all over the world. Don't expect anything good to come out of this system.

Wally, you're open love of Jesus, God, and everyone else is always refreshing on these forums. You brighten my days. Thank you.

I have a question. I fell in love with Jesus with the telling of the parable of the good Samaritan. I lost my faith in God forever the following week (about 47 years ago) when I was told of Abraham's task to sacrifice his son. (Genesis 22.2) To this day, I have heard of nothing more morally despicable. I would really like to know your opinion of how Christians are expected to interpret this.

The Bible, and I believe it was Lord Jesus himself, said, 'judge not lest you be judged.'

You should check the impulse to call people nazis, Wally. It is an unthinking slur and by making it, it can give people the impression that you consider yourself to be morally superior to others and in a position to judge them. You don't want that.

First, I extend my sincere apology to all of you who are not US citizens for our ignorant, churlish, shallow, dangerous, lying, childish, world menacing, President. He has done more damage to the United States than anyone in history.....Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein, and the like are also-rans against this, the most despicable and dangerous human being on the planet. Unfortunately, he had his Taliban wing of loyal Republican boot-licks in the House and Senate, as well as 50 million plus US citizens who, through ignorance, laziness, inability or unwillingness to think, were led by Roveian spinmeisters, the NRA, and our wing-nut " Evangelical Christian " hate groups such as James Dobson's " Focus on the Family " and many other mean-spirited Nazi-type individuals and groups, who chant: " more war, less environment, less child care, less education, more tax cuts for the rich, no insurance, more guns, kill the gays, to hell with our world neighbors, you're either with us and our God, or you're against us and our God, rhetoric.....the thing that comes to mind most to me is this: " I am so ashamed of Bush, his henchmen, our so called " Christian " hate groups, and the face of America they've projected that I just want to apologize for them......

Reckless1..how did he get preferential treatment?
He was found with 2 broken arms and other broken bones. None of which the VC set and no medical treatment. He was put into the "Hanoi Hilton" on a cot, after being "interrogated". After some years the Red Cross was permitted to see him, and some of the others..he was in a condtion that even the VC said he could go home. He chose not to, because he would not leave his men. They would all go home together, he was not going alone.

I remember these guys (all our POWs) getting off the plane..limping, unable to move parts of their bodies, because of the vicious treatment they got at the hands of the VC.

There was no collaboration, no prostitutes (as some joker has said)..just a cot, or isolation.
It's disgusting that these rumors persist..Who knows what the VC told the other men, while he was in isolation? Unless you were, you have no right to say "preferential" about his treatment.

I think the editor of this newspaper will be lucky if he keeps his job for much longer.

Billy Graham the protestant televison evangelist had his last 'crusade' in New York recently before retiring.

Guess who shared the platform with Rev Graham for this televised event?

Mr and Mrs Clinton the Left of centre Democrats.

George Bush didn't attend.

BTW
a) It was Roman Catholic Leftie millionaire Nancy Pelosi who went before the television camera to declare that Saddam Hussein had WMD's.

As did Hillary Clinton.

b) Roman Catholic arab Tariq Aziz was involved in killing 200,000 non-arab muslim Kurds.

This was before George Bush got to the Whitehouse.
