THREE US soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq yesterday, pushing the US death toll up toward the 4,000 mark in a bloody start to the sixth year of the war.
The three deaths, which brought the number of US soldiers killed since the invasion in 2003 to 3,996, came just days after President George Bush said the country was on track to victory in Iraq.

In a speech marking the fifth anniversary of the
war, Bush acknowledged the "high cost in lives and treasure" but said a US troop build-up in Iraq had reduced violence there and opened the door to a major victory in the war on terror.

The US military said the three soldiers were killed when a roadside bomb blew up their vehicle northwest of Baghdad. Two Iraqi civilians also died in the attack.

Roadside bombs are the biggest killers of US soldiers in Iraq.

On Friday, a US soldier died from wounds sustained from "indirect fire", a term commonly used by the military to refer to a mortar or rocket attack.

The US military has credited the deployment of 30,000 extra US troops and a rebellion by Sunni tribal leaders against Sunni Islamist al Qaeda for a 60% drop in violence across Iraq.

Tribal leaders have formed a mostly Sunni movement of some 90,000 men known as "awakening councils", or "concerned local citizen groups" (CLCs). The US military pays them $300 (£150) a month to patrol their neighbourhoods and man checkpoints. Six CLC members were killed yesterday in a US helicopter strike in Salahuddin province, 60 miles north of Baghdad.

STURGEON CONDEMNS ALEXANDER ON BIZARRE IRAQ WAR STANCE

LABOUR SHOULD APOLOGISE FOR ILLEGAL WAR

The SNP's Depute leader Ms Nicola Sturgeon MSP today condemned Labour's Wendy Alexander for her continued view that the Iraq War is not a "real issue" for the people of Scotland.

Ms Sturgeon said:

"It's outrageous that Wendy Alexander considers the Iraq War not to be a real issue. Labour continue to peddle this preposterous notion that the conflict isn't important to the people of Scotland.

"Many service personnel have died in this illegal and immoral war that has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians, and palpably made the world a more dangerous place.

"Wendy Alexander's insistence on not mentioning the war on its fifth anniversary is bizarre, and she should apologise for supporting the UK Government's decision to send in the troops on misleading information.

"She voted for the war in the Scottish Parliament and continues to support it, despite the overwhelming number of Scots opposing it – even the majority of Labour voters are opposed to the conflict.

"Ms Alexander is so out of touch with public opinion that it is no wonder her poll rating is at an all time low of minus 22.

"It's ludicrous to attack the Scottish Government on our record when we have done much more in ten months than Labour managed in eight years.

"The Scottish Government has abolished prescription charges, frozen the council tax, scrapped bridge tolls, massively reduced small business rates, saved accident and emergency hospital services, reintroduced free education and reached a historic agreement with local authorities to reduce class sizes.

"We are introducing legislation to improve the lives of Scots on a whole range of areas, while Labour continue with their negative carping on the sidelines.

"That's why the SNP are ten points clear of Labour in the polls."

#1 Couldn't have put it better myself.

The Mouth of the South remains a puppet for her masters in Westminster; notably Maggie Broon and that character you wouldn't employ to run a kindergarten sweetie shop, i.e. her little brother.

what do you elect politicians for?

what IS their purpose...

you select them based on their ability to make TOUGH decisions... decisions that often YOU dont want to make...

who gets the road built through their farmland...

who gets the penetentiary built in THEIR backyard...

where the sewage treatment plant gets built....

where the wars get fought... and why...

I dont know YOUR constitution, so I am left to quote mine (and my declaration of independence)... and believe (hope?) that yours bears similarities...

"we hold these truths to be self evident" "that ALL men are created equal" "unalienable rights"... "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"...

THESE are the reasons we are there... america BELIEVES in these things... with all our might, minds, and souls... and not just for White Anglo Saxon Protestants living on the east coast of the american continent... but EVERYWHERE...

"it is the rent we pay on the space we occupy"

you dont WANT to fight this war... welcome to the club pal... NOBODY in their right mind WANTS to fight a war... but know what... THIS war didnt start on 9/11... it didnt start on 12/21/88 (lockerbie)... it didnt even start on 10/7/85 (achille lauro)...

this is a "minds and souls" battle... where the footsoldiers are those "unwashed faces"... the "economically disadvantaged"... the downtrodden... the 19 9/11 hijackers came from these backgrounds...

somehow WE must "fight the good fight"... for democracies... for capitalism...

it IS the rent we MUST pay on the space WE occupy...

we either pay it NOW or we pay it tomorrow WITH INTEREST...
