ONE person died following a crash in thick fog involving scores of vehicles that included two fuel tankers.
Firefighters described the scene of the incident on the A19 in County Durham as one of "absolute devastation" and a senior officer said he was surprised there were not more serious casualties.

Police dealing with the series of three linked incidents on the dual carriageway at Peterlee said the poor weather was a "contributory factor" in what happened.

Officers said drivers had been going too fast in the conditions.

Durham Police confirmed the series of collisions had left one person dead. But a spokesman said he could not confirm any more details about the victim. He also gave no further details about other casualties.
