THE recession means it is "even more important" for politicians to discuss issues with the public, according to a spokesman for First Minister Alex Salmond.
The spokesman argued it was "vital" for ministers to "do all that we can to take government to our communities".

He spoke as details of the Scottish Cabinet's summer programme were revealed.

Last year, Holyrood ministers held meetings across th
e country throughout the summer recess.

The initiative is to be repeated this year, with Cabinet meetings planned to take place in Dundee, Melrose, Stornoway, Aberdeen and Glasgow.

Salmond's spokesman also insisted the programme was "extremely cost-effective" with the bill for last year's meetings – which took place in Dumfries, Inverness, Pitlochry and Skye – amounting to £60,550.

The spokesman added that was "less than one of the UK Cabinet meetings held outside London".

He stressed: "It is vital that we do all that we can to take government to our communities, discussing issues – both local and national – with members of the public right across Scotland. That is even more important this year, as we work together to fight recession.

"Our summer Cabinet programme allows the ministerial team to hear the views and concerns of wider Scottish society, helping the Scottish Government keep close to the communities we serve."

As well as holding Cabinet meetings in the towns they visited last year, ministers were also questioned by the public at a number of events.

Salmond's spokesman said: "Having the whole Cabinet team in one room to discuss the issues that matter most to people and their communities is something that was widely welcomed last year, and we look forward to developing these opportunities this year with the people of Dundee, the Borders, the Western Isles, Aberdeen and Glasgow."

Let's not forget that the Scottish government roadshow cost a fraction of 'Globals' recent stunt and the public weren't cordoned off and prevented from attending.

Salmond rises above the wreckage of the London Labour expenses crash and looks forward to yet another positive and well received roving summer cabinet meetings.

Now that's what the public want to see. A bit of normality shining through the chaos.

Well played Alex...yet again.

Salmond is not so much fiddling expenses, he is fiddling a salary (Westminster).

BTW
I'm sure millions of Scots will put their holidays on hold to make sure they don't miss a chance to hear the very gifted Kenny MacAskill.

What are the SNP supporters smoking?

Its pretty powerful stuff as they seem to think the whole nation can't wait to see the Scottish "cabinet" in action over the summer.

Was it Michael Martin who authorised the shredding of all MPs expenses prior to 2005 when the authorities knew there were Freedom of Information requests?
Lord George Foulkes who claims £579 a day for his second job of signing in at the House of Lords has been defending Speaker Martin (who stopped all attempts to publicise MPs expenses) in to-day’s Sunday Times.
From Sunday Herald 27 April 2008 A SENIOR Labour peer has been criticised after he claimed nearly £45,000 in overnight expenses to stay in a property he inherited from his late mother.
George Foulkes, who is also an MSP, billed the public to stay in a London flat registered as his company's address.
Quote from Ian Dale's political blog (12 May 2009):-

"Following the noble Lord Foulkes's fulminations earlier about expenses and salaries, how about his own remuneration:-
House of Lords: claimed £54,441 in allowances for 94 days attendance (£579/day)
Earns £36,000 as a Parliamentary Consultant to Eversheds LLP for 36 days work (£1000/day)
Claimed £3061.17 in allowances from the Scottish Parliament between April 2008 and March 2009
Salary for a Member of the Scottish Parliament £56,671.
So he trousers £110,000 in salary from the taxpayer, more than a government minister. And what's more I am sure that Mr Speaker surely can't approve of his almost hourly visits to the Sky News studios giving his views to the media rather than Parliament.... "

He has also been accused by the Scottish Government of wasting public and government time money by asking a large number of parliamentary questions, including how much money the Scottish Government has spent on spacehoppers, and how many times Scottish ministers have met with Scottish musician Sandi Thom. These questions reportedly cost the Government nearly £100,000 to answer.

When they come over to visit the Western Isles, would they kindly travel via the B840 Lochaweside road? If so, please let the council know beforehand, then we might get the road potholes filled up again (temporarily).

If Salmond thinks it is "even more important" for politicians to discuss issues with the public, perhaps he can give an adequate explaination why he ran up Westminster expenses when "he spent more than £130,000 in expenses and staffing costs as an MP during a period in which he visited the Commons six times". Either that, or he can pay back the money.

13 - meanwhile the public are getting their moneys worth from Lord Foulkes - unelected at both Holyrood and Westminster.
