Uncertain Smith steels his men for the big push

A murderous schedule threatens to undermine Rangers' drive for history.

RANGERS HAVE had it easy. Until now, all that's been required of them has been to haul their athletic frames through a mere 52 games in nine months, a period that has delivered an inconceivable title surge, underscored by a longest winning league run in 25 years, and a wholly unexpected UEFA Cup tilt, founded on the most intense spell of European football in their history.
A dawdle. At least compared to what lies ahead. Just as the joints of the Ibrox squad patently begin to creak, so the pressures and the fixtures really crank up. Frankly, if the first 37 weeks of their season were It's A Knockout, the next seven weeks have all the makings of Japanese gameshow Endurance. Notwithstanding a run of results that saw Walter Smith named Clydesdale Bank SPL manager of the month for March, he conceded: "The hardest work is to come; it doesn't matter what anyone says."

Serious expectations have the capacity to drain as debilitatingly as aching limbs and a brutal run of matches. For followers of Rangers, a failure to add the league championship and Scottish Cup to their CIS Cup triumph would represent negligence; anything less than a UEFA Cup final appearance a glorious opportunity missed. Never mind that to achieve these aims they will somehow require to negotiate 15 games in 49 days that could so easily expose the so far commendably-disguised limitations of their aesthetically-challenged style.

"If you have been through circumstances like this before and gone on to win a championship, then you would have confidence in your team doing it," Smith said. "But we don't know what reaction we will get from this group of players. We're going to have nine league games in six weeks, which is unusual. It has happened before, but it hasn't happened very often. You've got that on top of European games and at least one Scottish Cup tie and we have to see how our group can handle this situation.

"There is a reasonable amount of evidence to suggest there is a resilience and a desire to win. But their reaction to the final push is a big thing. A tension develops towards the end when you have to win."

Of the nine Premier League games that remain for Smith's men, the trip to Tannadice today is one of seven away from home. It is also the first of four consecutive away games – and potentially one of eight outside of Ibrox in four weeks – that Rangers must drag themselves through merely to retain aspirations of a quadruple. Mind you, hoop- wearing sides could make their task a lot easier.

Celtic's defeat yesterday helped enormously, and if Gordon Strachan's men cannot rid themselves of their flakiness, Rangers may not need be overly concerned about the outcome of their trip to the east end of Glasgow a week on Wednesday. And if Sporting betray the flaws that have scarred their league season, the scoreless draw Rangers' attritional approach squeezed out in the first leg of their UEFA Cup quarter-final three days ago could provide wriggle room for them to prevail in Lisbon this Thursday.

"We are still in the tie when you consider we have managed to get goals in away European games this season," Smith said. "We know we can do that but also know there will be spells in the game we have to play better than we did at Ibrox. If you look at all the games in the UEFA Cup and Champions League last week, they tended to be tight. As happens at the latter stages. Dick Advocaat's team (Zenit St Petersburg] had an outstanding 4-1 win in Leverkusen, but that is the only one of the eight ties beyond a team. All the rest are up for grabs. Arguably, we got the best result of any home team. We didn't do as well as we have, but the result was still a good one."

For more than a month now, Rangers' results have far surpassed their performances. That may be in part because, as well as battling opponents, the Ibrox men are now engaged in a mighty fight with fatigue. David Weir looked out on his feet the other night as the home side could not add to their one win in eight previous continental confrontations. Smith accepts tiredness may have contributed to the booking that will see the 37-year-old suspended for the second leg, a ban that will force the break-up of the partnership with Carlos Cuellar that has been the key component in Rangers' robustness.

"I felt there were maybe signs of tiredness from us in the last ten minutes against Sporting," the Ibrox manager said. "A lot of that is mental, not just a physical thing. There was a wee bit of slackness and lack of reaction towards the end. The couple of chances they had later on were basically self-inflicted."

Christian Dailly, who will be drafted in for Weir in the Portuguese capital, believes there is a danger of over-stating the effects of a relentless programme. "I don't think we were at our best against Sporting but we're in a situation where every time the team isn't quite at its best we are going to be accused of being tired," he said. "It is difficult to say if that is the reason. You can just play like that even when you are buzzing. It was a tough game and I wouldn't read too much into the performance. Everyone felt fine before it. You are never going to steamroller games like that."

Yet, running out of steam remains one of the biggest threats to Rangers' hopes of a season to rank among their very finest. It is a risk Smith is prepared to take. Despite having such as Steven Whittaker, Steven Naismith, Chris Burke, Kris Boyd and Dailly fresh and on the fringes, Smith talks of making only "one or two changes" for this afternoon's Tayside encounter. The team's core quartet of Barry Ferguson, Carlos Cuellar, Allan McGregor and Weir will remain so as long as their bodies and bans allow, even if Ferguson's levels appear to have dropped as he manages an ankle problem.

"We'll maybe get an opportunity to rest him in the next few weeks but he's not the kind of player who looks for that respite," Smith said. "It is something you've got to take into account but he is always liable to give you something different. You're always looking at the players who have played most of the games but you are loathe to leave them out."

Rangers will stand or fall with their stand-outs giving their all.

Whatever some fans of other clubs may say about him, leaving Ferguson out of the team previously has led to bad results. Weir will get a rest on Thursday at least. Despite Celtic's defeat there's still a lot of work to be done.

We need to win the next four SPL games. Then the league is won and we can field the U19s. The solution to fixture congestion is to win the league early.

Ok, read the following (unlikely) scenarios and post yer vote:
A) Rangers blow it and lose the league on the last day of the season and get knocked out of the SC by Plastic Whistle. We then go on to lift the UEFA Cup by trouncing Bayern by 3 goals in the final.
OR
B) We win only the league cup (Celtic, Sporting and Aberdeen win the League, UEFA and Scottish Cup respectively) but we then sign Fabregas, Torres, Gattuso and Hutton!!
C) We win it the quadruple but Smith leaves followed by Ferguson, Cuellar, MacGregor, Thomson, Stevie Smith, and John Fleck.

We needed 7 'wins' before the LOLtic result yesterday. Win our next 2 and its down to 3. A nice scenario. If we can get past SCP then we may be able to rest players in the SPL and concentrate on Europe and (hopefully) a SC semi v St Johnstone.
34

Hoosger,

Indiana, US 06/04/2008 08:33:04
Ha, you really got me there CaliforniaBhoy!!!! But I can tell, deep down, you are feeling a wee bit neglected so i'll add another set of possible scenarios for your good self....

A) Rangers win the league but there is an unholy and violent protest from the Celtic-minded that the refs in Scotland are biased and that. The SFA and the SPL, in a wonderful show of capitulation, agree that bigotry and other things that end with 'ry' must be stamped out (including masonry) so a final league decider is set up between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden on condition that the match officials are ethnic Irishmen, Catholic and Celtic minded.
OR
B) Gordon Strachan resigns and is admitted to the Rottenrow suffering from acute lack of Celtic-mindedness. Aiden McGeady decides that he would rather play for Scotland.

Weigh up the merits of each (scratch your chin OR erse!) then tell me which you would prefer CB!! How is the weather in California?
35

Rabbie Burns,

Back Home 06/04/2008 08:38:46
Surely now is the time for Walter Smith to test the strength in depth of Rangers' squad? Despite Celtic's shortcomings, there are still 9 SPL games to go plus the cup matches. Webster, Smith, Beasley (is he fit?), Cousin, Boyd, Naismith, Whittaker, Novo, Burke, Buffel, Gow - all of these players have been used sparingly and rarely start games. Webster & Smith must be near to fitness now as must be Beasley. With all respect to Partick Thistle next Sunday in the cup replay, I'd rest McGregor, Cuellar, Ferguson, Darcheville, Thomson, etc. Wins at Tannadice today and Parkhead on the 16th and the title is won. Let us hope we can show resolve and get past Sporting Lisbon on Thursday. Now where is my map of Manchester.....

CaliforniaBhoy A true Irishman prepared to show his colours. I think the league is over and wee Strachan will be replaced by Lennon this week. This will be suicidal from a footballing point of view but will keep the Celtic minded happy. Celtic global brand is one of happy Irish and anti British. Pity but true. Money is not in Scotland and Desmond etc are not in it for their happy disposition to their countrymen. A doubt about Champions League money and this might be the quickest clear out of money in history. Not that there is money left anyway. The British taxpayer has been fleeced. I disagree with the journalist!
There is no pressure on Rangers, none at all. You need to remember that this Rangers side have no right to be 6 ahead with two games in hand, but they are, thus they are way ahead of their intended target.
The domestic cups are an added bonus, they probably wanted to win one of them at the beginning of the season. Now they could win two.
UEFA Cup is a pleasant ride! Win or lose they are way ahead of their European target as well. So no pressure at all.
The problem is this; expectations have been raised, thus the Rangers fans are forgetting the bigger picture of where they were only last year.
If Rangers only win the leaugue and get pumped out the UEFA and the Scottish Cup, they will still be some two seasons ahead of were they wanted to be.

Walter has that component that sets him apart: dignity. I will acknowledge that he can occasionally lose the plot, but by and large he is old style Rangers and that is what I like about him; Gordon Strachan may be a nice guy for all I know, but he comes across as a right wee nyaffy erse fairly often. When he takes the hump and spits out whatever comes into his mind during press interviews I truly thank heavens that he is not our manager. Again, Smith has that stable quality and you just know he is not going to embarrass Rangers when he opens his mouth. Talking about class and dignity and suchlike I still don't like to see Barry Ferguson as Rangers captain. Fine player indeed, but doesn't have enough class about him to be Gers captain. When you think back to Greig, Gough, Butcher and the like, he is certainly lacking....

It is not certain that we will even make it into the semi's - Sporting were a useful team.

Althought the league, with the Hoops throwing it away yesterday, have all but givin it to us, two weeks earlier than we could have done it on our own.

I dont think Strachan will go - his pedigree is pretty good, however if he cant win next season its lights oot Gordy.

The Scottish Cup will come to Ibrox too - not bad (at least) a treble in Walter's first year back.

Dougie, I should have added that I'd hate any changes to adversely affect the team chemistry as that seems to be one of the real strengths this year; there seems to be a genuine unity among the players, which is a far cry from the dressing room divisions during the dying days of Advocaat' tenure. but there is just something about having Barry as Rangers captain that sticks in my craw; there is no doubt that the players respect the guy but I still can't shake the feeling that if he hadn't made it as a professional he might be runnin' aroond the scheme tannin' Buckie and pannin' windaes. I might be being a bit unfair on the man but that is the impression he gives me.....

NN, I thought for a wee while there that mibbee cos you just got up you had trouble making yourself clear. I now realize that no amount of sleep could fix what ails you, and for that you have my pity. By all means keep typing stuff as it is very entertaining; I am sure my brethren in the blue corner would agree.

Seriously though NN, if you'd rather we CAN talk about football instead of conspiracy theories. So here is a question: Do you think that Lennon will ultimately get Strachan's job?

#71, NN/IF/who-the-f***-cares-whatever, the disgusting,wretched cowardly filth.
His post yesterday, a feeble, sub-moronic, childish piece of crap, ATTEMPTING to deflect from the real issue of the catastrophic season at Septic Park, by poking fun at Eck and PLG (didn't he win the cup last week with PSG???).#278, How pathetic. How desperately, cringingly, pathetic. Posting about previous managers CURRENT performances. But then we have come to expect no better from the human detritus (aka NN/IF/ what-the-f***-ever (a piece of sh1t (I'm paraphrasing here) by any other name is still a piece of sh1t).

I saw the above headline elsewhere in the SoS. Imagine my surprise when I found that it WASN'T Walter Smith talking about ra 'tic!!!

So a poster is described as 'human detritus' for slagging of previous managers performance of a rival club but if you go on about child abuse your.........................?

Strange standards indeed!

Anyway back to the footie. Couple of bears on this thread being far too snobby and pretentious for their own good with talk of Bazza being a wee ned form the scheme. Although i do think that he is overrated ( just like McStay was beofre i get all the angry replys) he represents your typical football player especially in the west of Scotland. He is a working class guy from a council hoose state comp background and fair play to him for achieveing the succes he has.
Alaways remeber his genuine and sincere shake of the hands with Lennon at the last CFC/RFC match for Lennon.

MY God Cappelo has just given the armband to wide boy himself Ferdinand who hardley epitomises 'class' but then again he is a pro who can drive his team on ,just like Ferguson.

So please stop with the claptrap about schemes and buckie and get yer head out of yer prawn sandwiches.

I always think your comments are fair and maybe the talk of Fergie with the buckie is too far but he is not the right character for the captaincy. Maybe the game lacks old captains like Gough, Butcher, etc and just because we have a go at his somewhat 'ned' like attitude sometimes does not mean we are being snobby.

The No Ronnies,

#81, Sorry if you're miffed at my tirade at you-know-who, but it's no more than he deserves. I'm convinced by his Eck/PLG post that he is no more than 7 years old. As I said, pathetic.

Bosco Bhoy,

Dougie

I take yer point but as you have alluded to, society doesnt provide individuals like that anymore.

Guys with the class of a Henrik or Laudrup will not come out of the schemes and become a professional player. Think of Faddy and how the media loved the wee wide boy image, the gallus smart ass from Castlemilk --now that is sadly more the norm.

Fair comment mate and as you say, if you snort white powder, Capello gives you the England captaincy. 30 mill for Rio, one of the wonders of the world!
84

Bosco Bhoy,

06/04/2008 12:56:03
I will say this about Bazza, yes he is a tad overrated but i and 99% of fellow Celts would have been happier if had stayed at Blackburn.

He is often the major and only driving force RFC have and he cares so much about his club he infects others with this passion.
And sometimes he can find an excellent pass but not as often as he should, but then if you are relying on Boyd type players to make brilliant runs down the channels then you will be waiting a wee while.
85

Dougie D,

JHQ Loyal 06/04/2008 12:59:15
Bosco

I just think Fergie would play a bit better if he didn't have the added responsibility of being captain as well but I agree, he is the major driving force at our club. Most vital players to me this season have been McGregor and Cuellar, both outstanding.

Do you think WGS should go now?
86

Bosco Bhoy,

---Donegal----- 06/04/2008 13:22:51
IMHO he has failed to get the players to demonstrate and produce anything near their potential.

Just as bad is that most of his big signings have not delivered and this has been crucial as most of WS have contributed significantly to the RFC cause.

Lets see how the next 7 matches pan out but i did have mey reservations about how CFC played long before now.

Cant understand why he continues with VoH and thats just one of several big questions. Yes he has done well, but in Scotland its maybe the flip of a coin wether CFC or RFC are on top but as fans we need to look closer and ask is the manager maximising resources at the club and for me im moving to the 'no' camp re WGS.

54 Dougie,

I have to disagree with you Dougie when you said "the mob from the other side of the city has no excuses"

That's all you hear from some tic supporters,

Bias referee's
Masonic conspiracy
Spl schedule conspiracy
Media conspiracy
Our manager not Celtic minded

etc, etc, etc.

Bosco Bhoy, I am no prawn sandwich eater nor am I a snob. I had a typical West of Scotland council house upbringing. All the same I definitely take your point about my comments on Ferguson. As I said earlier, my impression of the guy might be skewed but it is hard to shake. About 12-13 years ago my brother (who IS a snob;-) heard Barry telling some young boys "no' the noo, noo f*** off" when they asked him for his autograph. That is a pretty hard image to erase and since then, fair or unfair, I have a hard time viewing Barry as a first class guy and typical Rangers captain. You could argue that maybe I expect too much from Rangers skippers, but I don't think so. It has to be said though that if all I have to complain about is Barry's character, then Gers must be doing well...............or maybe, I am a feckin malcontent!

OK, your not a snob but i do think your being pretty harsh re a one of recollection about Bazza. I wonder how many of our sporting heros cant have a similar tale or 2 dozen attributed to them.

A few years back Celtic team over in Donegal for a testmonial dance and i can teel you i left the big expensive meal with a less than positive view than some of the guys i had idolised since they got us to Seville. Far too many drunken arrogant twits on the night if you get my drift.

Sounds like fun at Tannadice.

Well a good game at tannadice. And once again Utd were robbed.

More cheating from Rangers - boyd's dive was worse than Thomson's last week.

More booting from Rangers - McCulloch and Daily a disgrace.

More dodgy decisions by the officals - Novo was offside and the first goal wasn't a freekick.

More sectarian and disgusting singing by the Rangers fans - isn't it about time Murray, Bain and Gordon Smith got a grip of these scvm.

All that besides it was a good game.

Noel Hunt, Sean Dylan and David Robertson for Celtic - all fine players.

Two points dropped by Rangers but they have still done enough. I just can't see them failing to win 4 of their remaining 8 games.

So the lead is only 7 points with a game in hand, oh well we can put them out of their misery with a win on the 16th, that will be 10 points clear with a game in hand.

United played well and the tic will have to meet them after the split. Come on the Well next week. lol

You seem to have trouble with reality and the meaning of words....

your post 104 and you saying you have dignity
there are other words you have trouble with, and I'm sure you'll be using them soon, as per the programme, so I won't mention them.

Sad
Aren't you?

Footballing success is transient but dignity & class are permanent.
