Laszlo lines up replacement for £2.5m Berra but Fletcher staying at Hibs

THE January transfer window at last served up a seven-figure deal involving a Scottish club after Hearts captain Christophe Berra yesterday agreed to join Wolverhampton Wanderers in a move worth around £2.5m.
But the prospects of a capital double receded after Celtic made no moves to increase their £2m bid for Hibernian striker Steven Fletcher, the Easter Road club throwing out this verbal offer on Friday night as way short of their believed £4m valuation
.

With Rangers thus far attracting no new bid for any of their players following Kris Boyd's rejection of Birmingham City, Berra's move to Molineux could be the most lucrative in the SPL.

The 24-year-old central defender travelled south yesterday for a medical and agreed terms on a three-and-a-half year deal with the English Championship league leaders that will double his current wage. It brings to an end the pursuit of the Scottish internationalist by Wolves manager Mick McCarthy that began when they lodged a £1.5m bid last summer. Hearts are believed to have already identified an inexpensive replacement for Berra as they look to reduce the wage bill.

"I have a candidate (to replace Berra] and if the club get this player, I will be very happy," said Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo, who is also interested in a German striker playing in Spain.

Hearts will also have to deal with interest in their winger Andrew Driver, who has attracted a £1m bid from Coventry.

The £2m Celtic were willing to invest in Fletcher, meanwhile, is the first time they have seriously shown their hand. On-loan Dundee United midfielder Willo Flood signed for a nominal fee from Cardiff City while the Scottish champions preferred loan deals as they sought to tie up Manchester City striker Ched Evans and West Brom left back Marek Cech in moves that seem to have stalled.

"We have money to spend and a willingness to invest in new players but there is a frustration over availability," said a Celtic insider yesterday, who could shed no light on a report that Newcastle are prepared to pay £800,000 for Celtic full-back Lee Naylor. "We will continue to seek to strengthen our squad right up till the Monday tea-time deadline."

In other business, Dundee United are keen to bring in Celtic's Paul Caddis on loan, believed to have been offered on loan to Hibs as part of the Fletcher deal. Meanwhile, sources at Nottingham Forest are convinced they will succeed in a £200,000 move for Hibs captain Rob Jones.

1 - Disagree - he will only get better but I am not sure if Wolves is th right club for him.

Jones has handed in a transfer request at Hibs. Source - Current Killie player who still pals with an ex Killie player at ER.

I know Pundit doesn't rate him as highly as many, but he still has a lot of potential to improve, if he does then Wolves have made a good buy, if he doesn't then we may look back on £2.5m as pretty smart business - assuming we find another player who can marshall the defence effectively, i.e. not Zaliukas.

My club , Wolves , a famous old club is on the up with a young and talented squad ,the best for years . As a player of potential I think Berras move could be a good one .He´ll have time to settle in and contribute to the promotion push from a difficult , but lesser league , thereby better preparing him for the EPL next season . I´m very hopeful that this team ,with Berra in it , will become ,in a season or two , a potent force in the premier league .

#6 - I was always impressed that Robbie Keane chose Wolves ahead of a number of other suitors as a young teenager. So you must be doing somthing right. As a supporter of Mick McCarthy in his war on terror with ayatollah Roy Keane - how is he viewed in Molyneaux?

Hope we bring in a striker, really need one to give us a chance of a good finish to the season. Nade isn't a lone striker and if we are to score goals then we need two up top, especialy against Hamilton and at Tynecastle.

4 I wouldn't congratulate iron rod petrie not selling dumbo yet, he could still go for an extra few pounds easily before the window closes tomorrow. Money will then be spent on a new wallet and tash combe for rod. The vast £200,000 from Nottingham Forrest for Jones will maybe be spent on a few grass seeds for the stikle-brick arena

We need a Stephane Adam type, and i think Csaba will have one up his sleeve, if not before next weeks game then in the summer. It's easy to forget the bulk of the squad is the same as last few seasons and with the young players breaking through we can only improve with having had a full season under Laszlo. The debt is coming down and with a few youths breaking through is helping to keep costs under control. I would like the tactics varied for different matches, but understand why he likes to keep the same shape. We have showed in patches that we have a very good young side, just have to get the heads down and keep working hard and get back to being difficult to beat but with a cutting edge up front.

I rarely make comment on these forums.

But you, Sir, are an absolute idiot of the highest echelon.

Your stupidity know know bounds and you are about as much a "pundit" as I am a fish supper..

You, quite frankly, troll these forums (It is actually quite amazing how much of your life seems to be wasted on here) morning, noon and night.

Your lack of knowledge and intelligence in the sport of football is apparent to anyone with half a brain.

Please jog on.

17 Cheers for that, Great, great memories, and Adam on his his knees after scoring in the Final is on all my screensavers. Hopefuly same outcome this time in the cup against Falkirk, although McCann may be playing for them this time. Sitting high behind the goal of the two 2nd half goals at Ibrox in 98, was a great game even Falkirks goal was a screamer.
