Mensing 11, 52 pen
MAYBE Vladimir Romanov deigned to make New Douglas Park the first Scottish football ground he visited this season because he wanted to get a feel for a properly-run football club. They do things a lot differently at Hamilton from down Gorgie way.
In Lanarkshire they have never chased success by spending beyond their means, have rooted their playing operation in youth development and are now in a position to reject tempting offers for integral performers – an option patently denied to Hearts with the £2.5m cash-in for captain Christophe Berra.

The contrasts between the two clubs extended to their latest contest. For Billy Reid's side did things a whole lot better than their visitors. As soon as Simon Mensing exposed a Berra-less backline's uncertainty with an 11th-minute headed opener, Hamilton had Hearts precisely where they wanted them... and never looked like letting go. Mensing's second, from the penalty spot just after the break, was the equivalent of the home side tightening the vice they had Csaba Lazlo's side gripped in.

Hamilton have an ability to deny opponents time or space by practically man-marking in all areas of the pitch when they are pressing. It is an approach deriving astonishing results. Yesterday was their fifth straight home win, a period during which they haven't conceded a goal. They have lost only once in their past six games. Most impressive of all, it is the first time Hamilton have won four successive league games in the top flight since the Second World War. "Same old Accies, always winning," the home crowd cheekily serenaded their team. In occupying seventh place in the top flight, the followers haven't had so much material for their tunes of top-flight glory in more than two decades.

The intrigue over events at New Douglas Park was always going to revolve around a player who wasn't playing from the moment news filtered through in the morning that Berra was on his way to Wolves. The long-in-the-gestation move inevitably meant the trip to Lanarkshire would be forensically dissected for evidence as to how Laszlo's side would cope without their captain, most influential and, as it turned out, sellable performer.

The surprise was that one of those putting their scalpel to work was the Hearts owner. The cynics would say that Romanov's first appearance at a Hearts game this season was in preparation for wielding a much blunter instrument as the club seek to sell off anyone capable of attracting decent sums.

The Lithuanian banker is a decidedly unsympathetic character, yet it is curious that he is the only owner of a Scottish football club of late who has been lambasted as an asset-striper when he has only reacted to past financial over-reaching and a new economic reality in the same manner as Sir David Murray. So far the only difference between Romanov and the Rangers owner is that Hearts have actually succeeded in cashing in on one of their central performers.

On radio beforehand, Romanov talked in his usual riddles. The club "took a big price" for Berra because otherwise he might have been "stolen by someone later". "If it is right for us maybe business will be done," he said of the possibility of shifting more players.

Andrew Driver is one of the few Hearts players in the £1m-plus bracket, Coventry having offered £1m dead. "We haven't received a satisfactory offer but we have been discussing the player with them," Romanov said.

He said his team was "getting stronger" and would continue to "progress" in the face of such fiscally remedial action. It didn't look that way in the opening period, especially when Brian Easton was able to return the ball into the box following a corner and neither of Hearts' untried central pair of Christos Karipidis and Eggert Jonsson got close enough to Mensing to prevent him being able to head past Jamie MacDonald.

In each half, Hamilton keeper Tomas Cerny produced fine blocks, firstly after a fizzing volley from Driver and later when Michael Stewart broke free, but otherwise Reid's side were secure in themselves. Indeed, when Robbie Neilson came over all octopus arms on James McCarthy in the 52nd minute and downed him before Mensing netted the resultant penalty, the result was assured. In Hearts' world, meanwhile, nothing is assured.

I respect Hamilton and there set up is desgined to encourage talent to prosper at a young age.Im not a bitter loser good luck to them.
The need for a prolific goal scorer at Hearts is nothing new,i hate defeat and hope reports of a striker arriving monday afternoon are true.
Good luck to Berra at his new club he will develope into a first choice international if they make it to the EPL.

11 - Hearts have been either good or bad - yesterday was bad and to be fair that result was coming. We have not played well since before Xmas and only our usual win against Hibs in the SC has kept the fans quiet. beforeb

#12 Agree regarding Kingston that was embarassing and he should be fined at the very least, although he played quite well when he came on he cannot be allowed to behave in that kind of manner
Was pleased with Obuas performance although some of the crowd shouted for him to come off after one poor touch i thought especially in the first half he was the only one who looked like scoring

I love this "it's only Accies" mentality.
Last 7 results;
Motherwell 2-0 h
St Mirren 0-1 a
Aberdeen 2-0 h
Ross County 1-0 a
Inverness 2-0 h
Kilmarnock 1-0 a
HEARTS 2-0 h
Only one goal conceded, a late strike at Love St and six clean sheet wins out of seven.
It must be our plastic pitch...Oh wait, that was the excuse all the "big teams" in the 1st Division used last year, but we don't have it any more, just one of the best grass pitches in Scotland (shame Motherwell's is so bad). Maybe every team has an off-day when they play us...that was the other excuse used last season too.
Or maybe we've just got an excellent bunch of young players who are starting to handle life in the SPL...get used to it.

It's rather sad to see the Scottish hacks lining up to get digs at Romanov in during his brief visit - you can almost feel the flecks of spit emanating form the corners of their mouths. First we had Chick Young completely losing it on BBC Sportsound yesterday and now Andrew Smith can;t contain his glee at being able to get one over Romanov.

So blinded is he by his own bitterness that he fails to see the complete irony of praising Hamilton for their youth development on the day Hearts get $2.5m for a youth player with just a couple of seasons under his belt. Hamilton may well be turning down "tempting offers" for their young players but then Hearts under Romanov have been doing that ever since Celtic put 300,000 on the table for Paul Hartley. Or did Smith miss the bids for Gordon, Berra, Driver and co?

And does Smith not realise that Hearts were the second team after Rangers to have the foresight to build their own youth academy? And does he not know that Rangers and Celtic (and Motherwell, Aberdeen, Hibs, Dundee and almost everyone else at some point or other) have been spending beyond their means for years? Or is he geneuinely unaware that Rangers are ins serious financial difficulties?

And he might like to cast his mind back to Hearts own impressive run of narrow victories. Only of course, Hearts received no praise whatsoever.

This is a poorly disguised rant against Romanov. Very depressing when you think of what good journalism should be and no-one reading it can have any doubt of the writer's agenda.

#15 TOTT I know what you mean i was shouting for him to run at the full back on the outside and get a cross in but then whats the point in that when Nade is still lumbering about outside the box?
Obua was unlucky twicw in the first half and if he is played in the wrong position that is only one mans fault.IMO Kari should move back to centre back Obua could have played on the left and Driver who was very poor could have had a free role
Nade has to start bursting into the box Bruno had the ball far left outside the box turns to cross and no one there Nade doesnt have the brains or the will to burst into the box and get on the end of things and i am really having second thoughts about Csabas tacticts although still a hundred times happier than with Frail

In your daily rant against Vlad you seem to have conveniently missed out the fact that Berra wanted away.

Berra has given good service and deserves his move.
Vlad deserves a lot of credit for sticking to his word and letting players that want away to move.

Your agenda with the club is becoming boring and repetative and very Hobo-esq.

#21 - What a load of tosh! As far as Rangers are concerned thay had sold Boyd to Birmingham. The only thing that stopped the transfer was Boyd himself so don't given us any more c_rap about Murray taking financial hits. He would have sold him if he could but no-one wants him. End of.

Pity we chose yesterday to give one of those dire performances of which we are capable with all the other results falling our way. Best that can be said is that no great damage was done to our push for Europe but things are not as good as they could have been this morning. We are still work in progress and liable to inconsistency.

The timing of Berra's trip down south could not have been worse for our prepartions so hopefully Casaba will get things sorted out in training in this coming week. A point lost on the journo. With a cup game - he'd better though!

Ah well, only 29 hours to go to see what our squad will look like for the rest of the season.

Good luck to Christophe - bright future ahead.

When Hearts get knocked out by Falkirk this week will this present a crisis?
Let's see how fickle you will be.
Hearts are worse than Hibs, you just have a better manager who will be offski soon.

#24 So, the administrators having failed to arrive and the fire sale not having happened you're now to pinning your hopes on overtaking us as the pre-eminent team in Edinburgh on our manager deserting us. Keep on clutching at these straws my sad friend.

Losing the cup game will be a disappopintment, not a crisis. But we were bound to tun into some decent opposition the competetion at some point I suppose.

Believe me, had there been firm offers for Hearts players the floodgates would open. Hibs have had firm offers, but are in a position that they need not sell. Wish Fletcher and Mixu would go though.
You are a tad deluded mate as you know that you continue to hang on by your fingertips. If there was a fire sale (although no one really wants your players) do you honestly think that your manager would stay? You are in a better position than Rangers although as no one wants a bunch of their has-beens (made to look OK) in a very bad league.

# 34 Ha Ha - get him told Mr Accies

From a business point of view (not sporting) you sell when a player's form/price is at a present peak.
Selling Berra just now may not be right for us fans but makes financial sense. OK he will probably get better and then command a bigger price later on but only maybe..... for an example - What team would right now match the £9m Sunderland paid for Craig Gordon. Unlucky injuries, loss of form and refusal to come for crossed balls have at least halved CG's value. What price right now Rudi Skacel, Paul Hartley, Roman Bednar? All good prices gained.
Look at celtic - in hindsight they should have sold McGreedy and Boruc a year ago when both were valued at £8m ......What price those two clowns now - £2m each .....if they are lucky.
Mind you - you could also argue if we hadn't sold those players we could be challenging for the league is the infirm are a couple of poor teams that are presently on the wane.Unfortunately we are fans of businesses nowadays not just football clubs.

As usual you have no grasp of the Facts and are happy to spout your own opinion and expect others to take your word for it...Hobo esq.

Did Romanov invite Wolves to offer bids of 1 mil and then 1.5 mil in the summer so that he could turn it down.Aye right.

Wolves offered a bid of 2 mil just over a week ago at Vlad's call as well i suppose.Aye right.

Berra has been quoted numerous times over the past month about moving on and has decided now is the time to move.
The club has not stood in his way and granted him his move & got a decent fee for a decent defender.

As for being a "keyboard hardman" as you put,i think your being rather churlish with that stupid outburst.

A Hobo Troll you are.

Clementjambo,

Please can everyone face the reality. Romanov seems to be intent on stripping the club bare of any sellable assets and, well, then what?

If we are not careful we will be the next Livingston or Dundee.

Why are the supporters so easy in him. He has not, in my opinion, actually spent a penny piece in real termns so far. Yes, he has borrowed plenty from himself but how far can that continue?

Maybe Chris Robinsons idea of selling Tyneastle and reclocating to Murrayfield was not such a bad idea. We wpuld have ben in a better financial position with a stadium we could drop prices to a rally low level and attract a larger audience.

We will probably be there in a short time anyway, when Romanov puls the plug and Hearts are left bankrupt with no home.

Horrible thoughts but perfectly possible given the current ownership and financial climate.

27

Hobo Harry,

01/02/2009 16:12:53
41 Bleeding Heart, Don't know about Hearts situation, but selling clubs often do "invite" clubs to make a bid. How else do clubs become aware of a players availability? Also, potential buyers often ask to be kept in the loop about any individual players circumstances, effectively to be given a heads-up if the player is for sale.
28

Jambo-ree,

01/02/2009 16:48:31
#27 On what basis do you think I would believe you on any matter relating to football? I've got no doubt Driver will move on if not now then probably in the summer and sadly the same is true of every club in the SPL. We are small league on the periphery of European football and any footballer who wants to make something of his career will have to move out our wee country to do so (and that includes the OF these days).

I'll believe you about Hibs being OK when they make a signing of some worth without selling a player first. As for Fletch, well the club must be hoping he recovers his form as he's been gash for a while depressing his value. Meanwhile you're going to be stuck with a player who would rather be elsewhere.

#31 How can you say Murray is content to let it go? What other option has he got? Boyd won't move and Murray can't make him. Not a matter of 'listening to the fans' just a matter of fact. Murray is more likely seething about the whole issue as he himself wants out.

Do I think we should have retained Berra? In theory, yes but in reality no. The money will come in handy as we reduce our debt and if Casba manages to bring in a player he has earmarked as a good replacement and he's as good as he says then I'll be happy enough. Frankly I think the transfer windows are a thoroughly bad idea and should be removed.

And you believe everything you read in the papers do you ? Homw many lies and how much conjecture will you read before it sinks in ?

Funny have that story doesn't tie in with McCarthy's comments about Wolves chasing the player and getting exasparated that Romanov wouldn't talk to them. Funny way to 'tout' a player if you ask me.

Not sure if is receovered now or not however I think money might be the answer to this one.

Sunderland have to pay Hearts £300k once he plays a few more games. Suspect they may have a wee cash flow problem just like everyone else.

I suspect that some of Hearts fianancial difficulties have resulted on this as they were probably banking on that money coming in.

He should have dealt with at least 4 or 5 of them, Keano went nuts, dropped him, and he's not really found his feet since then. Bit of a shame really...

#49 Yes, I do remember the game and you're talking mince. Keane was a shambles as a manager, and his team were a shambles to match.

He made Gordon the fall guy, the truth is the whole defence were ripped apart and Gordon was left utterly defenceless.

If Sunderland don't want him I'll gladly take the money for Berra and pay it straight back out again for Gordon. He'd be worth 15 points a season easy.

I don't know. I think balogh and macdonald are solid keepers but Gordon used to make difficult saves look easy, I recall thinking on several occasions 'How the hell did he save that ?'

I don't believe baloghor macdonald have that same quality and that's what can win you and lose you games.

Yes, because he has a business to run and a club to manage. This isn't 'Football Manager 2009' on the pc. The guy has got books to balance.

You are extremely anti-vlad and I think that clouds your judgement somewhat. Berra wants to go, he's made that quite clear, Vlad wants cash, so win win.

Yes, it weakens the team but it gives an opportunity for one of the youngsters to come through or he may have an equally good (and cheaper) replacement in mind as Csaba has pointed out.

As for your anti-vlad position everyone is due their opinion but the fact is this gut has spent more on players and wages than ANY OTHER chairman.

Yes, he's made mistakes but he's also made good calls. Unfortunately some people can't see both sides.

If you want someone to blame go and sit on the Piemans doorstep. He's the one that created the mess in the first place.

You also seem to suggest that Murray is a more honourable man. How ? He put his entire squad on the shopping list, then tried to deny it. Boyd would have been sold if he had his way but refused to go. Nothing to do with Murray being a good guy, he'd bit the hand off the first club to offer £3m for any of his players.
