LEROY ANDERSON
****
Orchestral Music 3
Naxos 8.559357, £5.99
Although the American composer Leroy Anderson is best known for his novelty music, such as 'The Typewriter', 'The Syncopated Clock' and 'Sleigh Ride' (all featured here), he was also a prodigious composer and arranger of more serious works. Always populist and accessible, his output included arrangements of music by Gershwin, and a '76 Trombones' that outdoes Sousa.

Much of this CD from Leonard Slatkin and the BBC Concert Orchestra includes music in a jocular vein, but his 'Suite Of Carols For Brass Choir' is appropriately serious and reflective, while among the first-time recordings is 'Melody On Two Notes' from 1966, which sounds like a theme tune for a prestigious TV drama. Enjoyable and well-played throughout.
