ONE in eight rape victims treated at a specialist centre in Scotland is under 15 years old, new figures reveal.
May Deanie runs the Archway Project in Glasgow, the country's first one-stop centre for sexual assault victims, where they can be examined, receive counselling and be given health advice. The groundbreaking work which they offer is available around-
the-clock to patients – both male and female – from the surrounding area without the need for referral from the police.

Based in the city's West End, it is almost a year since the project opened its doors and, in that time, they have helped 160 victims, of whom eight were men. However, a further 20 were girls aged between 13 and 15 years old.

Isabelle Kerr, at Rape Crisis Scotland, said the appalling statistic does not surprise her. She added: "I think it just shows that young people are just as vulnerable. There is no specific profile or age group for a rape victim."

Deanie said the Archway Project, which has received widespread praise for its work, showed the extent of the problem in Scotland. She added: "It is the tip of the iceberg (the people] who come forward, but there are lots of different issues affecting why this is. Some do not want to go through the courts process, some blame themselves, others fear ridicule from their families. Some simply prefer to forget."

Deanie continued: "The perception of rapists is that it is a stranger in the bushes, but in reality there is a huge variety in offenders. Rape and sexual assault can happen to anyone, irrespective of age, disability, gender, age, ethnicity, religion, faith or sexual orientation."

It is estimated that about one-third of the Archway's patients have gone direct to the clinic instead of being referred there after attending a police station. And its supporters say this indicates that many victims do not feel able to talk to the police about their ordeal.

One rule which the Archway insists on is that all its patients attend within seven days of being assaulted. This is because it allows the centre to gather potentially vital evidence which could be used in any subsequent prosecution.

After an initial consultation, the Archway Project offers victims the chance of a forensic examination and the option to store samples, therefore allowing the victim time to decide whether to press charges.

Other services available include follow-up testing for sexually transmitted diseases, counselling and legal help as well as referral to other support agencies, if required.

The project staff includes two consultant doctors, a specialist sexual health nurse, a full-time counsellor, as well as a team of specialist forensic examiners.

Translators can also be called upon to work with victims from other parts of the world.

This is yet another sign that we Scots are as a race regressing to what we were like when the clans roamed the hills.

This is a disgusting statistic

Forcing an object into another person's body is an act of violence - assault. If a knife is used, the weapon is displayed as evidence.

All rape cases should be treated as assault and the 'weapon' displayed as evidence. Since that on its own is hardly a weapon (except when used against children), other factors such as force, threates, drugs etc could then be taken into account.

But, it is highly unlikely that the courts would allow the 'poor rapist' to be so humiliated. Whereas, it's okay to humiliate a woman with regard to her past experience and the clothes she wears.

I would also add that I, personally, know not of a single male who is so disrespectful of others that he would resort to such a crime. And, the majority of men are decent and caring.

1# I take your point but I don't think it's so much regression as a total absence of respect and morality. Anyone who has grown up in a modern civilised society knows what they're doing. In the case mentioned, it was opportunistic - no witnesses and the court system is less than sympathetic.

Police probe Labour MSP’s £1000 gift
By James Hamilton

LABOUR WAS involved in a second investigation last night after it emerged former health minister Andy Kerr had also been reported to the Crown Office - over an allegation that he failed to declare a £1000 gift.

Holyrood Standards Commissioner Dr Jim Dyer - who has already reported Wendy Alexander to the Crown Office - has also declared Kerr may have broken the law.

Now police are to question the former health minister about hospitality he received from fast food giant McDonald's and which he did not include on the official Register of Interests in breach of the MSPs' Code of Conduct.

That failure set in train a four-month investigation by Dyer, who has now decided Kerr may have broken the law.

The East Kilbride MSP faces being suspended from the Scottish Parliament or a court fine of £5000.

The investigation centres around a trip to London Kerr took last August, when he and eight other MSPs were treated by McDonald's to hospitality at the FA Football Shield, the traditional opener to the English football season.

He has already admitted failing to record the gifts and hospitality in the allotted time. MSPs have 30 days to register hospitality and while the other MSPS did so, Kerr only recorded it four days after the deadline.

Three years ago Kerr's Labour colleague Ken McIntosh was forced to resign from the standards committee after he also failed to register his Charity Shield trip.

Last night a spokesman for Kerr blamed an administrative oversight'' for the omission.

Roberta, if you know 100 men at least one will be a peado by physical touch and 5 will look at inappropriate porn regulary, 3 will have raped, 40% will be adulterers, of those who are fathers at least 155 of them will not be the father of the chiold they think is their own, 21% of them will have used a prostitute, many will be regular users, 7 will use drugs regularly, again of the married ones @ 50% will sodamise their wife,

8# I can't disagree with you. I was trying to avoid the gender trap with my views. I grew up as the only girl in a family with five boy - and my father. I had around thirty uncles and a similar number of male cousins. Some of my best friends were male. I even married one who had four brothers, and I have a son of my own.

Excluding family, I think I can safely repeat that I know of no such activities by any of them. I'd take their heads off.

I think you have got into the wrong thread or are befuddled by something.

Your posting has NOTHING to do with rape statistics or perhaps you have an agenda where you INFLICT irrelevant commments in the wrong forum.

Why is this "newspaper" not reporting on the fact that Wendy has been reported to the proculator fiscal?

Were all their journalists in the pub watching rugby yesterday?

Or are the editorial staff still trying to protect her?

You'd all be better off reading the Herald, at least they report on news in Scotland.

Once we clear the corruption amongst politicians here in Scotland we won't need 1,000 new policemen..

Infact we will need less...

What happened to the Moderator of this thread?

Shouldn't he/she be making sure that the topic is adhered to, which isn't about Wendy or 1,000 policemen, can't that person inform posters that they MUST stick to the topic?

It may be that it is the police that need to clean up their act because where I live they are the most corrupt I can still remember seeing the police taking a back hander from drug dealers and then getting caught out in court telling bare faced lies and the judge allowing it..... Goverment, judges, courts and police are all at the hub of the protection and safety of this country and it only takes one bad apple so........lets get rid of the rot by clearing through each barrel . The people have the right and the power to demand that things change and for the better, we need strong fundations and principles, at this moment we talk them but don,t do them

Now Haggis please tell me and point me in the correct direction in the SoS where I can find anything similar.

You have to ask yourself why this is not reported in this newspaper.

Shame on J******* Pr*ss for failing to convene a Board Meeting to dictate editorial policy and decide whether or not the Editor was independent enough to report the latest update on Wendygate.

There appears to be an "administative" shortcoming at the Scottish Parliament (aka jobs-for-the-boys-r-us).

Just checked the Members Interests page and got this, apparently up-to-date as at 21 December 2007:

Could the problem of rape in any way be a result of the UKs liberal immigration policy?
