CONTROVERSIAL feminist Germaine Greer sparked uproar yesterday when she claimed that Princess Diana was a "devious moron" who came to a "sticky end" after messing up her life.
The outspoken academic and author launched a tirade against the late Princess of Wales during a talk at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

Greer claimed Diana had failed in her "insane job" as Princess of Wales and ridiculed her for allegedly bombarding a former lover with nuisance calls.

The Australian writer, who was there to promote her new book about Shakespeare's wife Ann Hathaway, went on to argue that the princess's infidelity and actions were at odds with popular perceptions of her as an "angel."

Greer claimed Hathaway had been reviled unfairly after her death in contrast with Diana, who she feels has been unjustly venerated after her death in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

Although many in the crowd greeted Greer's comments with laughter and applause, some were offended. One member of the audience said: "I came here to learn about Ann Hathaway not to be subjected to an mean-spirited rant against a woman who cannot defend herself."

The event host, journalist and broadcaster Ruth Wishart, eventually intervened to stop Greer going further.

The author, who revealed she had been researching and writing an article about Princess Diana, said: "One of things I have always been troubled by with Diana was why her whole life was such a mess. She made a mess of being Princess of Wales but that is fine because the job is not do-able. It is an insane job and historically all but one of the Princesses of Wales have come to a sticky end, some even stickier than Diana's."

Greer, author of the best-selling feminist treatise, The Female Eunuch, added: "I have also wondered why Diana couldn't adjust to life after being HRH.

"This still puzzles me. Diana did that no-no thing - she slept with married men. You do that in Hello magazine and you are out of the human race. You are beyond contempt.

"She slept with Will Carling [the England rugby captain] and was forgiven somehow, despite his marriage being in a very delicate state. Diana then slept with Oliver Hoare, the antiques dealer, who eventually realised he was in deep shit and went back to his wife.

"This (Diana) is a very complicated woman. Diana made 300 nuisance telephone calls to his home telephone number. Yet this is the angel that people want to crown."

Greer said she had come to the conclusion that Diana was "a devious moron".

At this point, Wishart, who was compering the session, halted proceedings, saying to Greer: "I'm just going to save you from yourself there."

Greer conceded that her remarks on Diana would be controversial, stating that she might "have to go into hiding for a while and buy a bulletproof vest".

No-one from Clarence House, which speaks on behalf of Princes William and Harry, was available to comment.

Diana a moron?????- True!!!- and the inmates of the Big Brother house too!

Just ignore them and they'll go away.

2

I'm no really here,

19/08/2007 00:22:12

I seem to remember Ms Greer having this accusation levelled at her too in the past.

3

Let's have the truth,

Australia 19/08/2007 01:06:59

Germaine Greer is a bitter and twisted old harridan who would have no chance of the sex life experienced by Diana, unless with herself.

4

Colin B,

Bearsden 19/08/2007 01:53:11

Greer is a jealous peasant, like Michael Moore she never has any evidence to back up her assertions- both are famous for thier opinions not their accuracy - indeed Greer damages the perception of women in senior roles

There was a piece written by Dr. Greer on this subject a few weeks ago. I didn't get it. I couldn't understand why she would criticise the woman for sleeping with blokes. Because, like #3, this is what people used to pick on her for.
I felt a bit sick after reading the article. I'm not a fan of the royals but it was kinda nasty in a boring way.
My dad likes Dr. Greer. Her humour tickles him.
When asked once about all the guys she's done he reckons she replied — "Yes, & may I say, they were all well hung." Dad enjoys a joke about blokes & their ol fellers.

Sorry, not like #3, I meant like #2.

Germaine Greer has eclipsed even herself here. She is the absolute epitome of the most surly, disaffected women on the planet. I've known a couple of them.

Her abominable Female Eunuch arsed up an entire generation of normal, level-headed intelligent young women. She can be held personally responsible for many of UK society's ills, and continues to promote her ungracious pathetic self on UK TV.

This is the same Greer who shagged her shameless way though every British pop celebrity in the 1960s in order to further her career. Pots and kettles come nowhere close to this vile person who has traded on her infamy in order to promote her sick "I-know-best" fundamentalist dogma.

She is to be reviled, as are all her like-minded sour feminist "sisters", whose sole purpose is to hate those who enjoy life normally. Emphasise "normal".

8

Alex.,

Aye, but she is right though!

9

yolanda,

Germaine Greer may well be right about Diana, who in myopinion never deserved the halo some people crowned her with, but it sounds like a publicity stunt to me. If she was supposed to be talking about Ann Hathaway, she should have stuck to that. Sounds like she was just looking for attention really. No doubt this will give her what she craves.

10

Australiana,

"Devious moron" may be unpalatable but it is also obviously true. The reaction to her death in Britain and elsewhere was the epitome of trash sentimentality and dreary celebrity culture.

About time somebody stood up and said it like it is with all these royal parasites living or dead!

12

Mikey,

19/08/2007 08:42:41

10, 11, 12, not being a person who venerates the living or the dead, I agree with you all completely.

Little rich girl with messed up life, dies in road accident. That couldn't be said as she had been setup as a press superstar and the psychologically unsound believed it all!

13

Porry,

19/08/2007 08:53:59

Germaine who? - Although her fame does not seem to have crossed the borders of the English-speaking countries, in contrast to that of the two she deals with, she is probably right concerning the "Queen of Hearts". That was the right name the latter picked for herself if you think of the model appearing in 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. Insofar the popular substitute 'Queen of F*rts' is unnecessary - Lewis Carroll said it all.

14

mrsbruce,

19/08/2007 08:56:43

At last! Enough of this 'Diana Shrine' stuff!

And don't give me that 'poor woman's dead, she can't defend herself' stuff.

She wasn't a saint, although some people seem to want to turn her into one.

15

Cramond,

Oxcars 19/08/2007 08:59:34

Dragonhead. You're right about Greer (family group etc.) but I'm not sure if Diana was any better in this regard. She had some odd bedfellows.
I don't think Yane, Melbourne, read your post.
P.S. I hope the recent typhoon didn't affect you.

Human decency??

Paris Hilton by royal command Never worked a day in her life nor attempted to listen to the problems of mankind unless there were cameras nearby.

Never done a thing in her life that could be construed to be generous or for the sake of others (again unless there were cameras to record it all)

Milked publicity under the protection of the other royal parasites, which Paris Hilton doesn't have! Result? She slept with any married man she fancied, partied until she couldn't stand and spent the good tax pound of all the crazy British royalists who cried when she died in a road-crash.

More fool you

Jeez, calm the beans folks. She's getting old, kicking and screaming all the way, she's got a book to sell and has just garnered a lot of free publicity. Smart cooky I would say!

I'm no great lover of the Diana thing but Germaine Greer? Gies a brek, she's a howling, broken down harridan of the very worst kind. She's a self seeking, publicity creating, media manipulating.......... wait a minute, she's all the things she criticises Diana for.

20

Johnny Bravo,

stinks of a publicity stunt

21

Meursault,

France 19/08/2007 11:05:02

I was at this event on Saturday and Germaine Greer did not "launch a tirade". The remarks she made about Diana (which were in response to a question from a member of the audience) lasted at most 2 minutes out of a riveting hour-long discussion about Ann Hathaway. I find it sad and unprofessional that a newspaper like The Scotsman has chosen to focus exclusively on these remarks.

22

Choosername,

19/08/2007 11:40:50

Diana was a devious moron among simple morons. That's why she is venerated.

23

bus user,

edinburgh 19/08/2007 12:17:14

I'd think more of Germaine Greer's comments if she had made them at the time. Anyway, the real culprits were the unspeakable Windsors, who knew full well that Spencers lineage was peppered with mental illness, but took that along with the starry eyed virginity to ensure heirs. After all, who would notice one more nutter in that lot?

24

JudyS,

Poor Germs 19/08/2007 12:53:26

You have to feel sorry for Germaine!
She was famous in her youth but is no longer so. She's brainy and logical - that's for sure.
She was beautiful in her youth and has not aged badly at all - but she is certainly no longer a beauty.
She was always foul-mouthed and that hasn't changed.
She was certainly enormously promiscuous - so criticizing someone else on those grounds (someone who probably was not at all promiscuous) is pretty pathetic.
One has to wonder why, with her amazing mind, she couldn't have made a serious analysis of the whole situation of the young innocent Diana, the foolish pampered Charles, the cold Elizabeth & Philip, the relentless pursuer Mrs PB, and what has now transpired.
Come on Germaine - give us the serious analysis that you are more than capable of producing.

27

JG,

Fife 19/08/2007 14:26:26

I think Diana was certainly a moron but I doubt she had the brains to be devious! She did have a talent for manipulating the press and she was unquestionably a beautiful woman - in these days of appearance before substance that goes a long way towards perpetuating the myth that she was somehow saintly. Her name was linked with many men after her problems with Charles - as far as I know (and I'm sure the better informed will correct me) Camilla has been linked with her former and Charles yet she is the one who is pilloried.

It is nice to read an accurate portrayal of someone who was a shallow, manipulative misfit.

I find it nauseating that people can think well off someone whose life consisted of patting idiots on the head, while undertaking "good works", and saying "theres a good pleb, now P*ss off I need to through myself down some stairs and then make myself sick (you woukd punish a three year old if they behaved like that).

If you examine her life what did she actually achieve:

She married the future king, produced an heir (plus a spare one just in case);

wore some frocks;

went to a lot of charity events;

shagged for England;

made nusance phone calls;

became skilled at self promotion.

Hardly the actions of a "saint."

Young and naive, she was manipulated by the 'royals' for their own means, until she decided to live life and yes, shag about, wear designer gear and have some fkn fun, good on you girl, thats what I say, why sit in a corner mouldering away, smiling till your face cracks whilst your husband plays tampon with his horse faced old flame? no, she had the right to experience excitement, love and passion, it is after all, what she expected would happen when she was led up the garden path, whoops, sorry aisle by her royal fraud of an intended, as for the 'madness', 'insanity' etc, a young woman married to the future king who shows her as much love as a dead jellyfish beached at her feet - desperate for his attention -more girl than woman - no wonder she abused herself and craved attention - so she self harmed as loads of young women do, its a big hint that someone is unhappy numpties, perhaps, you would prefer that she lay back and thought of England? Sure Diana became wild, manipulative and uncontrollable, shock horror, what are we going to do this girl would not take a telling,

Cheers, here's to you doll!

Diana was a press manipulating self appointed victim of the upper class hierarchy that promoted her to goddess status as quickly as it was to let life drain from her in a Paris tunnel.

Fair enough, she was screwed (or wasn't as context may have it) by her husband, but was happy to bask in the flashes of cameras that marriage had brought upon her.

As for her being a moron: was she not a church of england and its the Osmonds who are Morons?
