Published Date: 22 June 2008
BUSINESSES will be encouraged to monitor the weight of their employees as part of a £56m Government plan to tackle Scotland's obesity epidemic.
Workers will type in their weight every morning – using Government-provided software – allowing occupational health staff to spot significant weight gain and offer early help, under the scheme unveiled by ministers. The Government also plans to appo
int a full-time official charged with liaising with Scottish food firms and encouraging them to make products healthier.

Ministers also want to change the way cooking is taught in the nation's catering colleges by getting young chefs to rely less on salt, sugar, butter and cream, and more on healthy alternatives.

But the plans have attracted criticism from opposition MSPs, who said promotion of exercise in primary schools was being neglected. One business leader said the scheme seemed "heavy handed".

Obesity is estimated to cost the NHS in Scotland £170m a year and Scotland is the second-fattest nation in the developed world behind the United States, according to figures published last year. A quarter of Scots adults were classified as obese in 2003.

The Government's new anti-obesity strategy is being launched today by the public health minister Shona Robison.

Additional measures include spending £19m of the total programme on vouchers for fruit and vegetables for women of childbearing age, pregnant women, and children under five in disadvantaged areas, and a review of commercial sponsorship rules to crack down on advertising and promotion of junk food.

Ministers will order a retraining programme for midwives and health visitors to ensure that they can give the most up-to-date advice to pregnant women and mothers. In addition, the SNP will launch a "cooking bus", which will tour Scotland giving advice on healthy eating.

Robison said: "Obesity is one of the problems that, like climate change, does not have a simple solution and requires a new way of thinking. If we successfully tackle obesity then we will reduce ill-health, and a healthier Scotland is vital for sustaining and growing our economy."

Dr Rachael Wood, an expert in child health at Edinburgh University, said: "I'd be very supportive of efforts to train midwives and health visitors to give advice to pregnant women. It's interesting how they are wanting to talk to food producers about making their products healthier. Until now, we have tended to focus on the demand side."

Iain McMillan, the director of CBI Scotland, said: "I think we will want to look at the detail and we are in favour of promoting health. But it seems that some people are drinking far too much and some are eating far too much and it's everyone else's fault but their own. We need to have far greater regard for the fact that people are responsible for their own welfare. And this seems to be a very heavy-handed approach."

Margaret Curran, the Scottish Labour health spokeswoman, said: "Today's announcement seems half-hearted.

"It's very surprising and disappointing that it does not include key SNP manifesto commitments on guaranteed outside activity for children in disadvantaged communities, and of course two hours' physical education for all schoolchildren."

Scott Webb, you need to get out more. Try visiting China, for a start. You'd be surprised by the reality here.

Factually, your post #45 is garbage. The cost of living here is very low by UK/US standards, so in fact you don't need any more than 'sweeties' to buy the basics. And people work very hard, unlike the welfare-state junkies at home. However, Chinese salaries are rising at double-figure percentage rates, and have been doing so for years. The really low-value work (e.g. making shoes) is already moving to cheaper countries.

PS: I just lost 2 hours of my life watching that video 'programme' you linked to. Don't you know a comedy when you see one?

Friend-at-large,

USA, the fattest nation. 22/06/2008 09:41:35
There have been tragedies of crop destruction--rice crop destroyed by weather violence, Myanmar, and Midwest USA corn and wheat crop damaged by river flooding. The media comments about how this is leading to a crisis of food availability have me concerned.

I am glad more and more people are tending vegetable gardens. The do-it-yourself independent type has my respect.

I wonder if this campaign to be temperate in eating is an advance tactic to shape how people deal with food shortages. Food prices are up. If you can eat less you can spare your budget and your waistline.

However, I think the supermodels get to use cocaine to keep themselves svelte and yet I do not think drug use is endorsed for the rest of us. (More typos and more train accidents, etc.) If we are all on diets we perhaps will not notice so much that there is less available to eat.

Coming soon: The rise of the survivalist who has a knack for cooking rat so it tastes like chicken...(Joke.)

A lot of these plans are total baloney.

A good idea is what they do in Spain here; Every company who has over 100 employees has to have a canteen. When I visit large companies like these I have lunch and you get starters (soup, or greens) main course fish or meat, sauses, then help yourself to veges and chips and then for sweet is yoghurts or fruit and a beer or fruit juice. All in it costs the worker less than 5 quid.

I mean you can really stuff yourself if you want but the Spanish do not have a weight problem like us. In industrial estates there's no wee van selling greasy cr&p with irn bru or cola.

What are we going to do? Weigh people and then tell them off. Absolutely stupid. Almost everything the SNP do is good but having a bus go round to tell people what to eat is just foolish.

By the time people start earing a living its far too late to get many to change their dietary habits. Its the schools we need to devote attention to as that is the future. Thats why Nicol Stephen tried to raise the very issues last year during the election campaign and the media didn't want to know and a big minority of Scots chose to listen to wee fat Eck Salmon instead. Shame on all you ADULT voters who made the wrong choice.

courting criticism here, but working in the public sector myself I have seen over the past few years a whole new industry created, this been Health Promotion. There is an increasing body of people, often themselves either a poor example of healthy living or the other extreme, the healthy neurotics. Once in a job, it is very difficult to get rid of them, so I feel there is a degree of work creation here, one week booze, next week food. I propose recycling them and finding more useful tasks for them, or giving them redundancy packages. Yes expensive, but I believe it would be worth it. If anything, for my mental health.

Last time I was in hospital, I did notice that the majority of staff I came across, were very decent, competent and overweight individuals.

I am not a bitter, overweight person, as some more suspect. Very fit person, who does not go preaching to others how they should live their lives as long as it does not affect others, particularly myself and those close to me.

Hey Meths, Conan, Ayrshire Laddie and Spook - all on one thread.

I have a theory - and it is mine, and mine alone - that the governmnet will soon offer economic incentives to fat people. Put simply, fat people will undergo lypo-suction and sell their fat to the government after which it will be used as a bio-fuel.

It's a win-win!! Thin people who are driving eco-friendly cars to their homes that are heated and lit by their own fat!!! Go figure; pardon the pun!

As I pointed out before, the initiative ISN'T being launched today - and I fully expect that not to be the only error in the story.

Nothing in the scheme will be compulsory - and the state certainly won't be monitoring your weight as implied in the article.

A fat person coming to me is a nightmare. The amount of fluid it takes to sort his/her body out before family viewings is driving me under. The bladder contents would fill a Skipp and the smell is putrefying. Even after death fat people are a burden and are a menace.

143 - I think 141 was either a spoof, or a thoroughly unpleasant person in totally the wrong job...

As to the idea of businesses "being encouraged to monitor the weight of their employees" - if they'd wanted to ensure more people than ever made every attempt to stay/become unemployed, then by setting up such a humiliating and insulting scheme they hit the bloomin' jackpot.

What unmitigated insolence!!!

I am a credit to my profession and have all the skills achievement awards to prove this. The feedback i receive from most families is very positive. I say most families because one family's fat sibling was a kin to being very fat so i decided to dress her up like Miss piggy to detour other relatives from dumping fat love ones on my door step.

I do 2 for the price of one so if you decide to die try and time it along with someone else.

I would seem that the Scots HAVE been working on their weight and most have an extra stone or two or three to show for it. Folks from the eastern side of my town are rarely seen NOT working on their weight with at least one hand even at the few venues where eating is not permitted, but then misbehaving is their other calling.
