GORDON Brown is preparing to lead his party into the crucial Glenrothes by-election, but only from his neighbouring seat in Kirkcaldy, Scotland on Sunday has learned.
The Prime Minister has vowed to maintain the convention which states that the occupant of No 10 does not actively campaign in by-elections.

But the Brown camp is now eyeing up numerous dates in the Prime Minister's calendar over the next two month
s in his own Kirkcaldy seat, which they may turn into de facto campaigning visits.

The ploy would mean Brown would be able to maintain his position of keeping out of by-elections, while still enabling him to be closely and publicly involved in the fight for the seat.

Brown's aides point out that Brown's seat and the Glenrothes seat are "linked economically and socially", meaning that Brown would not necessarily need to step foot in the constituency to be actively engaged.

The Prime Minister is under intense pressure to lead from the front in the campaign.

Labour currently holds the seat with a majority of 10,600, but bookmakers have installed the SNP as clear favourites, following their astonishing victory in this summer's Glasgow East vote. The by-election was called following the death of sitting MP, John MacDougall.

A defeat for Brown could be cataclysmic, with Labour sources warning it could prompt a leadership challenge this autumn. The by-election is now expected some time in October.

The Prime Minister's diary over the next few weeks is understood to include several engagements in his Cowdenbeath and Kirkcaldy constituency, which is immediately to the east of the Glenrothes seat.

Local party activists point out that the border between the two seats is almost meaningless. Many Glenrothes constituents work or study in Brown's seat.

Sources add, however, the Prime Minister has yet to decide on his involvement. In the recent Crewe and Glasgow East by-elections, Brown stayed out of the way, citing the unwritten rule. However, it has been flouted twice in recent years, both times by Tony Blair.

David Cameron upped the pressure on Brown last week, saying he would be campaigning and calling on Brown to "rise to the challenge of campaigning in his own backyard".

Labour will decide on its candidate tomorrow, with local headteacher Lindsay Roy the favourite for the post.

Comrade Broon trying to be devious???

Well I never!!

From the Times

The government squandered almost £500m by leasing RAF transport aircraft that it could have bought outright for less money.

The Ministry of Defence wanted to buy the four Boeing C17 Globemasters for £520m but was told by Gordon Brown, then the chancellor, to lease them because it would be cheaper.

VOTE SNP

From Uncle Tom Brown's Schooldays

"I'll hold your coat" said the frightened Brown from outside the playground, fearing the fat boy would steal his play-piece.

"The Prime Minister's diary over the next few weeks is understood to include several engagements in his Cowdenbeath and Kirkcaldy constituency, which is immediately to the east of the Glenrothes seat."

I can't figure that one out. Cowdenbeath is way west of Glenrothes while Kirkcaldy is south - and just a tad east. I can't see any constituency boundaries but my logic would suggest that it lies west to south west of the Glenrothes seat.

Bring it on... but Labour are treating Fife voters with contempt as they said Glasgow East needed an MP immediately, so why the delay in Glenrothes.

The Prime Minister has vowed to maintain the convention which states that the occupant of No 10 does not actively campaign in by-elections.
Uxbridge by-election, 1997-Labour's campaign included a visit by PM Tony Blair.
Eddisbury by-election, 1999-PM Tony Blair went to the constituency to campaign.
Hamilton South by-election, 1999-Personal appearance by PM Tony Blair.
Aye yes this convention started in 1st Jan 2000

Brown would not necessarily need to step foot in the constituency to be actively engaged. But Gordon Brown is the MP for Glenrothes until a new MP is elected.

Hansard (House of Commons Daily Debates) 2 July 2008
The Prime Minister: It is right that the constituents of this area of Glasgow (East) have a new MP as soon as possible.
What about the constituents of Glenrothes, don't they also need a full time MP ?

Does anyone really expect the Glenrothes by-election to be held before the Government's economic package has been announced? Recent by-elections and bribes to the voters go hand-in-hand.

Yesterday, the SNP claimed the Glenrothes by-election campaign was being run directly from Gordon Brown's Kirkcaldy constituency.

Fife MSP Tricia Marwick revealed Labour party leaflets and a survey from a Labour councillor in Glenrothes, distributed alongside a leaflet commemorating late MP John MacDougall, were carrying a Kirkcaldy freepost address.

"With Gordon Brown's constituency, Gordon Brown's candidate and what looks like Gordon Brown's office clearly directing Labour's campaign in Kirkcaldy, this is Brown's by-election to lose," Ms Marwick claimed.

What about Marshall's expenses - there has been a deafening silence from the media on this matter since Glasgow East.

When will the horrible truth come out and how will it affect Glenrothes?

Apparently, the by-election will now be put off until december.

The next thing we know it will be held on the same day as the general election, that would mean the bad news could be hidden by the good news of the total rout of slab

During the Parliamentary recess when a member of Parliament dies or goes to the Lords, a by-election can be triggered by two MPs from any party certifying an election warrant. If a certificate is served by two MPs more than two weeks before the end of the recess, the election goes ahead without one(Parliamentary vote).

" Labour are filthy to the core."

Absolutely and in that regard Lindsay Roy, the alleged front runner is a perfect example. Put into Kirkcaldy High School because HMIE found it to be a dire failing establishment, he is clearly trying to get out before he is found out!

I suppose we should feel sorry for whoever is selected as the Labour candidate in Glenrothes. A real case of the lamb being taken to the slaughter. He or she is going to be trounced in this by-election. Can't wait!!

He doesn't get the name "Bottler" for nothing does he? First he forces an underhand retraction from Darling via the brainwashed Brian Taylor, now he wants hidden influence in running the Glenrothes campaign and as it inevitably goes t!ts up, he can scuttle off again and deny responsbility for anything, except maybe pouring another few billions into some other failed enterprise like offering government mortgages or whatever. This garbage needs to be removed asap.

Narrow-minded Politicians like Gordon Brown who Champion Westminster Policies to crush the Scottish people's right to a better treatment than they are getting. www.oilofscotland.org The problem Scotland discovered oil and since then we have been insulted, lied to, defrauded, had or funds raided and our marine borders moved from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Carnoustie. So for him to secretly lead his party for Kirkcaldy is no surprise. Before you vote read the TOP SECRET McCrone Oil Report. Don't Vote Labour it is your 32 Million a Day Stop Giving it away.
