Published Date: 07 September 2008
A GOVERNMENT minister has apologised unreservedly to a female civil servant who asked to be moved out of his private office because of his behaviour towards her, it was revealed last night.
The Department of Health said the woman was "unhappy with the nature of her working relationship" with junior minister Ivan Lewis, right, but chose not to bring a formal complaint against him.

Reports suggested that the minister bombarded his youn
g assistant private secretary, 24 at the time, with dozens of suggestive text messages.

She had been appointed to 41-year-old Lewis's private office when he joined the Department of Health in 2006. After complaining to her managers about his behaviour, she moved to another post within the department and has since left for an accountancy firm.

The Department of Health said: "In 2007, a member of staff in the private office of Ivan Lewis informed her managers that she was unhappy with the nature of her working relationship with the minister.

"The situation was handled professionally and sensitively in full accordance with the employee's wishes. She raised no formal complaint against the minister and, as indicated, all the actions to resolve the matter were agreed with her.

"It was in that context that the decision was taken at the time not to pursue the matter further.

"At her request she left the minister's office and was given another job in the department. She was a hard-working, extremely competent employee and we were sad to see her subsequently leave the Department of Health. The minister in question apologises unreservedly."

Lewis has been MP for Bury South since 1997. He joined the Government as a junior minister in the Education Department in 2001 and moved to the Treasury before being appointed to his current position with responsibility for social care and mental health in 2006.

He kept his post in Gordon Brown's first reshuffle after taking over as Prime Minister last year, but was later seen to have damaged his career prospects with press articles claiming Labour was "losing touch" with an angry and disappointed electorate.

Last month, he risked further anger from No 10 when he urged Brown to consider a new tax on top earners to help ordinary families through the economic downturn.

The question should be would this sexual harassment have been made public if Lewis hadnt upset Gordon the Loony by asking for a tax on the mega rich.

I dont think so, do you?.

What beautiful and political poetic phraseology - presumably on an 'Accept it - OR else basis!'
That's the way we do it!

There is no excuse for this sort of behaviour – Mr Lewis should resign immediately.
And I hope these revelations give a very senior Scottish politician some pause for thought.
If the rumours are true, his disgusting behaviour towards young female staff – far worse than Mr Lewis’s puerile texts – is well known to those at the very top of Scotland’s small, but influential establishment.
So far he has got away with it…but for how long?

Since the man appologised which counts as an admission, he should have been removed from the post he so readily abused, instead of her being moved and sweeping it under the table. Is it just the labour party, or are all MPs thinking with their trousers, no wonder the country is in a mess.

You seem to make an accusation here (or do you),since you give no indication of who you accuse, and that could be for a number of reasons ,one of which is you don't dare do it because of the consequences, the other being you don't dare do it because you heard it through the grapevine, and its as unreliable as it can ever be.

You may indeed know something, as opposed to thinking you do,the latter however remains the more likely of the two.

Whilst I would strongly echo your thoughts on Mr Lewis and his behaviour, since his apology is an admission of guilt, and he should be removed at least,I would be as concerned as you are if we are saying an apology is acceptable from a politician, (or a claim of no intentional wrong doing)when clearly self confessed guilt, is established guilt, and cannot possibly be a matter which should not proceed in the public interest.Nevertheless it is so.
Otherwise we are saying declare your intention to plead guilty and the matter rests there ,with no trial!
Thats one step too far surely. We try people who claim they are innocent,(maybe because they are) but we do not try people who are guilty (because they admit it).

Rumour however is only that, unless you can substantiate it, and I'm not aware of anybody being known to be guilty of anything by anybody?

Are you saying you are?
I suspect you are inferring guilt, and possibly with good intention, but unless you have something more than an opinion, then I would suggest it remains as your opinion only.

No worse than Clinton I suppose.
He should consider resigning.
