Definitely. Pro-life campaigners talk of medical advances and how more babies are surviving premature births, but the medical profession overwhelmingly supports continuation of the 24-week limit. Hopefully we can now concentrate more on education and the prevention of unwanted pregnancies.

Whether they were right or wrong, I sincerely hope we never go down the route of the United States, where a politician’s stance on the abortion debate can be key to the success or failure of their career. As with the death penalty, on abortion we must bow to the will of MPs voting according to their conscience. A lesson Gordon Brown now understands.
