Policies

• The Labour Party supports the European constitution and having a British referendum on the issue. Labour wants to keep Britain’s veto on defence, foreign policy and taxation.

• Within Europe, Labour would campaign for both EU-wide arrest warrants and regulations to freeze terrorists’ assets. The Labour Party is committed to moving UK border controls to the continent and campaign to fingerprint asylum seekers on entry to the EU.

• Labour promises to use Britain’s EU presidency in 2005 to push for delivery on Kyoto commitments.

• The party would work within the Common Fisheries Policy but promises to seek to take decisions at a local level. The Labour Party also plans to promote fairer global trade through the EU.

• The Labour Party promises to extend workers' consultation rights and anti-discrimination legislation.

Prospects

Labour faces a very bumpy ride from the electorate over the Iraq war, fuel prices and assorted other difficulties.
