I expected Lesley Riddoch to know better than to describe Westminster as the “Mother of Parliaments” (“Election stakes could not be higher”, Perspective, 13 April).

This phrase was first used by MP John Bright in 1865 when he described “England [sic] as the mother of parliaments” because it gives birth to successive parliaments. Indeed, the UK will give birth to another on 7 May.
