Hit-and-run driver's victim on the mend

A YOUNG dad severely injured in a hit-and-run is starting to recover, as police continue the search for the driver who hit him.

Darren Newlands, 26, was found in the middle of the road in West Calder, West Lothian after being hit by the car on July 31 after he enjoyed drinks with friends.

Witnesses reported that Darren, from Polbeth, was involved in an argument minutes before he was hit, sparking fears that he was targeted on purpose.

Today his stepmother, Carole Newlands, said there had been a "wee improvement" to his condition. She said: "The swelling has gone down, which is promising."

Police are urgently appealing for information on a red or burgundy car seen in the area as they search for the driver who sped away from the scene.
