MOTHERWELL 2
Porter 64, 78

AN ASTONISHING afternoon that warmed every part of your being despite a chill at Tynecastle that should have frozen us to the spot. The glow of the football, though, kept the cold out, the Motherwell comeback from 2-0 down, on this day of all days, ensuring that this cup tie will take a hell of a lot of beating for the game of the season.

Given they've not won a game since November 11, it was a shock in itself to see Hearts move effortlessly into a two-goal lead. In the 63rd minute the home team missed a chance for 3-0 which Stevie Frail would rue later on. For almost immediately Motherwell pulled one back, Chris Porter scoring. Now things really sizzled. Ross McCormack, rumoured to be of interest to Middlesbrough among others, had been playing beautifully all day but he went into overdrive towards the end. McCormack popped up everywhere and Motherwell scored again, Porter once more.

All square now. But there was more. Hearts responded. Paul Quinn made a fantastic block from Andrius Velicka, who had earlier scored Hearts' apparently match-clinching second goal. Just after that, Jose Goncalves denied Porter a certain hat-trick with a critical intervention. Within minutes it was Hearts again. A Velicka shot was charged down by Jim Paterson, the ball went spinning into the air off his body and down on to the Motherwell crossbar and away. It was gripping and immensely enjoyable.

McGhee was a proud and relieved man afterwards. "We were determined that everybody should enjoy it and make it a good football occasion," he said of their approach. "Even at 2-0 I said to Scott Leitch (his assistant] that there is something in this game for us. The players showed their ability. It wasn't about battering it or launching it. I keep mentioning Arsenal and Manchester United. They believe in what they do and they stick at it. For me, to get a result from 2-0 down means our players believe in themselves."

The Motherwell men had a quiet little moment just before kick-off, a brief huddle in front of their own supporters against a backdrop of a giant Phil O'Donnell shirt held aloft with the legend Brave As A Lion written beneath his No.10. As far as sentiment went, though, that was it. The Hearts team stood respectfully together while this was going on and in a few seconds it was over and the business of football took hold.

If there was an uncertainty how clear Motherwell's heads would be yesterday we got an idea pretty early on, for it was the visitors who carved out the first opening and they took barely three minutes to do it. It had an old familiar ring to it as well, created as it was by that little devil, McCormack. He got free up the left side and put in a ball to David Clarkson.

The centre forward would have fancied his chances from such an advantageous position in the box and especially with one as iffy as Eduardis Kurskis blocking his path. He got his shot away and no sooner had he done so than Christophe Berra threw himself in front of it and blocked it down. It was textbook scrambling defence from Berra.

In fairness to Hearts, they soon tapped into the spirit that got them through a difficult afternoon last Saturday against Kilmarnock. In the ninth minute Andrew Driver was involved in a move that saw a Velicka snapshot flash past Graeme Smith's goal; in the 10th, Driver was present again and this time Hearts found the target.

It was Driver's perceptive pass to Andrius Ksanavicius that started things. Ksanavicius then swung in a cross that found Cesnauskis unmarked in the box. The Lithuanian side-footed it through a ruck of bodies and into the corner of Smith's goal. Still, at half-time McGhee was able to remind his players that the last time they were here they were behind by a goal at the break and went on to win 2-1. Seven minutes into the new half, though, McGhee's words of encouragement were compromised.

Hearts doubled their lead thanks to a big punt downfield from a Kurskis free-kick, a flick-on from Michael Stewart and a smart finish from Velicka, the striker going around the goalkeeper to score. The Motherwell fans had issues with the referee in the preamble when Stuart Dougal awarded a drop-ball after Berra took a blow in the unmentionables. Goncalves then won a free-kick that Kurskis launched to Stewart and which Velicka eventually scored from. To be fair to McGhee, he didn't see the referee as the problem. "It was the way we defended it," he said.

Bad luck one moment, huge good fortune the next. Ksanavicius had a point-blank header from a few yards out for number three and failed to close the deal. That was the turning point. A minute later Stephen Hughes played a ball up to the edge of the Hearts penalty area and kick-started the revival. Keith Lasley gathered it and flicked it into McCormack who drilled it across goal for Porter to put it away.

Hearts retreated under a barrage of attacks from the visitors. Where before they looked comfortable, now they looked shaken. Two months without a win tends to make a team this way.

The same three men involved in getting Motherwell's first were involved again in the second, the damage being done down the right this time. McCormack played Lasley in and he provided the cross for Porter to bury the equaliser in front of his own euphoric fans. Dramatic stuff. We have a replay now on January 22. Bring it on.

Stoatir of a game......two teams going hell for leather.... a credit to the scottish cup. I also applaud Hearts and their fans both for the commemorative programme, and for the Hearts fans support at the small gesture to Uncle Phil by his team-mates.
Hearts will of course be disappointed at surrendering a two goal lead, but I suspect that even the most committed fan of either team would agree that a draw, and a replay, was the perfect outcome to a grand tussle!!
Well done to all concerned, roll on Jan. 22nd !!

Indeed a great game, Hearts were immense in the first half and if we play like that again next week we will be dishing out the usual 4 nil to Edinburghs lesser team before half time, can't wait hitting form just at the right time.

Having been there on reflection a fair result, but again no favours from guy in the middle. Hearts man lies lying hurt and assistant referee looking at him lying in pain after feet whipped away from him and referee not paying any attention as he is too busy awarding a soft free kick to Motherwell. We are told we are paranoid about decisions going against us.

I didn't see into Director's box but understand John Collins was there, is there any truth in it. Does anyone know.

I'd like to thank all the Hearts fans for there respect yesterday at Tynecastle, it left a lump in my throat to hear a thunderous round of applause from what must have been 10.000 Jambos in respect of Phil.Good battling cup tie which I really thought was lost for us but I don't think you will argue that a draw and a replay is what we both deserved. Thanks again and good luck at Fir Park.

This is a an excellent club and great bunch of people It is not just a man's club, there are a few ladies too. I will be joining the club and if there are other Jambos in the North West interested in joining then go online and contact Manchester Hearts www.manchesterhearts.co.uk.

Yes 9* it was serious post. This time there was only 15 on the coach there have been more. Yes you are right No 12* it was parked there. I understand the club has members from as far as Birmingham. We had a great welcome from the Merchiston Hearts club. 13* you are away off the mark we have taken more than 35000 to a cup final. I don't know about 400000. I know last cup final there were thousands of Jambos who coudn't get tickets, as Hampden not much more than 50000. Some members of club are season ticket holders and drive up to the games. !3* support for your club was great yesterday and the noise your fans made help make it a great atmosphere. Yes check out website. Of course we nearly turned the coach around when we learned Kurkis was in goal lol, but when we heard Elliot wasn't playing that made up for it lol.

Over 2 months now without a victory!!!!!

There was some momentum 2 weeks ago for change, pressure statements, boycotts threatened, big anti Romanov threads everywhere.

A couple of draws, a wee statement from Romanov that we need are getting a new manager and new signings (less than 3 weeeks to go) and guess what - 90% of fans are happy again!!!!

Are we so easily led, gullible etc? YES!!!!! Romanov by a few words and doing NOTHING has done it again!

With Hibs winning 3-0 and having a new manager, I think that the derby is just a formality and Hibs will take all three points. Indeed, Hearts are struggling this season, leaking goals badly and sitting second bottom of the league.

Yep, Hearts are certainly hitting form at the right time.

Wouldn't count your chickens too early if I were you. A derby can go either way and with the Goalies in each team prone to a few errors whether it be Calamity Ma kalamby or Bombscare basso or Scissor hands Kurskis you just don't know do ya.

The team that defends the best will win the game.

# 30 Well that will not be Hearts then as our defence has been the worst I can remember. Full back defficiencies has cost us dearly many times this season - as yesterday from what I have been told.

On a negative beat - Only 10,000 Hearts fans paying money for what was obviously going to be the tie of the round yesterday.

VLAD..........Looks like your "I've stopped meddling" comments have been disbelieved by many.

When we start getting crowds as low as FFFHibs things are serious - VLAD take note !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Goalie , striker , right back and manager. This might keep what dwindling believers there are onside.

Ksanevicius - Over nearly seven months he has had a number of chances , many being sitters...........
His Ratio of chances to misses - is he one of the worst goaltakers ever to play for Hearts - though his play on the whole is more than reasonable , his striking ability is putrid. If you play a man "in the hole" - he has to be able to put the ball in the net. Unfortunately Ksanevicius cannot.

victor ian,

very good game. we were probably a tad lucky to be 2-0 up, then motherwell came on to a right good game and hearts started sleeping. hearts were very unlucky to miss a couple of chances late on but motherwell also could have won it.

neilson was definitely the man to blame for the first motherwell goal which was the starting point for chucking it away.

the replay will be a toughy but it's still possible.

VLAD......

Your most recently aired recruiting policy is seemingly .....Buy them young (usually Eastern European for value for money) and get them to sign decent long term contracts. This lncluded nabbing a decent youngster from FFFHibs recently.

How about this then - We need a goalie and going by your policy - an eastern European about 18 or 19 with lots of quality would fit the bill. The Hungarian - David Groff(spelling) at FFFHibs is seemingly highly pi55ed off down there at his lack of chances. This young goalie from what I have seen and heard of , is out of the top drawer. What is stopping Hearts doing the same as earlier in the season and poaching him from their rivals ?
1. We get a quality keeper (never too young to play)
2. Would not cost too much as FFFHibs will not be paying him a lot.
3. Would stick it right up FFFHibs just before the derby. Psychological wind up.

Hearts need some devine intervention to save their season, so Hoddle might be the answer!

He probably reckons we're paying for one of our past lives?

Anyway, despite yesterday being an exciting match I still think we are in deep crisis! What chance have we against this Motherwell side in a replay? Nice home draw against Huntly or Dundee would have been nice!

Half way through January and there's no even any rumours or speculation about a new manager, striker, not to mention defenders!

Not even any mention of departures of deadwood - which let's face it there is plenty of at Tynecastle!

After the win against Celtic I was looking forward to the semi at the end of January - not so confident now though!

No action and that's worrying IMHO!

Mon The Hearts!

When did the pantyliner manage in the EPL or even English championship for that? or we'll make it easier has he actually managed a team above second division in any league in the UK? one 3-0 victory over a 2nd division outfit and all of a sudden your world beaters with a top manager. Craig Levein has nothing to do with the pantyliner. Yes he came from Cowdenbeath as well, however i don't recall all the Hearts fans thinking he was as great as you lot think mixu is. From the highlights I saw herts looked very good in the 1st half, then steam-rollered in the 2nd. Highlights can be misleading tho'.

Still, gives us another derby that really is too close to call. Hibs have a manager, and are back to winning ways, herts can play well and are at home.

Neck on the line here - 1st goal the winner.

Also, will be surprised if there are 22 on the pitch at FT.

Finally, frail will in in charge for herts. I expect there to be an announcement in Feb that he's getting the post until the end of the season.

#72, i fear this hobo may well have broken ranks with his colleagues and is talking some sense. that seems like a scenario which could well happen.

like i said on another thread, i have heard something from a completely plausible and reliable person that there is / are one or more people who would take the job, should certain ground rules be agreed upon. one of the conditions is highly unlikely to be agreed though.

hopefully negotiations and compromising can see this overcome.

Any chance of "outing" these individuals?

I expect the conditions involve a fax machine and no talking to the press (not in itself a bad thing).

#75, no.

1. the people in question are in employment.
2. the people who passed this on until i found out about it did so as long as it remained on the QT.

the condition is not related to team selection.

another reason for not giving details about it is this. we all know how fond banderson and his scotsman colleagues are of using this and other forums as the source of their 'news' stories.

let banderson do some investigative journalism for a change i say.

#76, fair do's, Victor.

Although with point 1 you've ruled out Keegan.

Still leaves Wenger tho'. ;-)

When can we get Bednar back? WE need him badly! Him and Velicka up front would be magic.

Think Bednar has all but agreed to join West Brom.

All that's left to do is agree the fee. Judging by how he's done down there they'll want to keep him. We should be hounding him back, we need him more!!!

The story I was told about the new manager involved Vlad sneaking back across to Edinburgh incognito. He'd nipped out of his office at Tynie and was going along to Greggs for a steak bake and a can of Irn Bru when he saw this wee wummin carrying a couple of bags of heavy shopping.

"Can you manage, hen?" he asked. (He's learning the language slowly but surely)

"Bu99er off," she said. "I'm no wanting the job".

You read it here first :o)
