SCOTLAND'S Liberal Democrats had a rather modest campaign, spending £300,000 on their attempt to boost their number of seats at Holyrood.
Their whole campaign cost less than the SNP spent on mailshots alone, and the Lib Dems found that they struggled, losing seats to both the Nationalists and the Tories.

The Lib Dems' spending included the sum of £472 for a media consultant to fly
up from London for a day training candidates in how to face the press and broadcast media. The modest Lib Dem campaign flew him up and down by easyJet - at a cost of £74 return.

While all that training might not have transferred into extra seats, it did a lot for the hotel in Dunfermline where the training session took place. The Lib Dems paid £1,550 to the town's King Malcolm Hotel.

The choice of Dunfermline was significant: the town was part of a key Lib Dems target seat, and as soon as the training was over the candidates hit the doorsteps in an effort to boost their local campaign.

Computer manufacturers tend to do well out of elections. The Lib Dems shelled out £1,093 on a shiny new Dell computer, complete with a trendy flat screen. At the other end of the technology scale, the Lib Dem list of receipts even includes £4.49 for a bar of environmentally friendly Ecover soap for their headquarters.

The Scottish Lib Dems also spent £250 getting new professional pictures of leader Nicol Stephen taken, and they forked out £15,101 on a round-Scotland coach tour.

Congratulations to the libdems who appear to rely much more on honest money made from jumble sales and quiz nights to fund their campaign. No doubt a few larger donations would come in very handy but not from the dodgy characters who prop up the other parties.

Now give us the Tory, Labour and the rest's breakdowns of expenditure. It would only be fair!

I thought he was called Stephen Nicol!

The SNP and Labour both spent over £1 million and won many more seats - this just goes to show the influence of money in our politics, especially when you consider the dodgy sources of donations to those parties. The Phillips review must be implemented in full (encouraging more, smaller donations from ordinary voters, not rich people buying up favours) and the national spending limit for elections should be halved from £1.5 million to £750,000.

#2 and #4: so the Lib Dems rely on "grass roots" and "jumble sales" for their income, do they?

Can you join together the phrases "Michael Brown", "£2.4 million" and "illegal donation"?

They were going to spend more, but they couldn't organise the LabLibTory coalition in time to get permission.

7; don't be daft man. These liberal waste-of-space chancers haven't got a clue about anything (they actually believe that their idiot leader is inspiring for them) never mind the relevance of the link between "Michael Brown", "£2.4 million" and "illegal donation". They are as corrupt as their political bedfellows...

And where are they now…? I think they spent more time believing they may be ‘king makers’ than mounting a serious campaign. I’m a huge fan of Ming as a Fife MP and Charles Kennedy but not sure about their presence in MSP land under Nicol. Since the elections they have all but disappeared as far as I can see, apart from picking away some petty issues along the way. If they are to be taken seriously they need some genuine leadership. Salmond has gone from strength while they have melted into the background. I’m sure they are doing ‘stuff’ but it’s not visible to me.

Many thanks LfL, that is actually quite useful. I’m not actively involved in politics and I usually only spark up any interest in the run up to an election. I was quite surprised at the way the Libs dropped out of the spotlight after no agreement could be reached and it struck me that they were mis-managed and unable to compromise on anything. I do have full respect for Ming + Charles but don’t see much to impress after that. I will keep in touch with that site to check latest developments etc…
