Scotland's lethal attitude to drink

HARDEEP Singh Kohli hits the nail on the head when he says: "There are depressing social reasons why our kids feel the need to go out and get absolutely hammered from such tender ages. Wouldn't it be cheaper and more effective to try to deal with the reasons why..." ('We need to grow up about our boozing', Comment, May 11).
These social reasons are not unique to Scotland, but there is a level of intensity in Scotland relating to alcohol which is a major concern. Kohli's diagnosis of the problem is pretty accurate, but the organisations in Scotland that are charged with solving the problem are still massively under-funded for their task.

We need real public awareness that alcohol is a drug, and we need to acknowledge that it is much, much cheaper in relative terms than in previous generations.

David Nummey, London

Let's throw more money at it - that'll solve it. No it won't. The people who can solve it are responsible adults - all responsible adults. But we're afraid to talk to the kid in the park who is gulping his buckfast or whatever because we fear the consequences.

Time adults were treated as such and stop the ridiculous 'rights' that these kids quote. Time we told our children that yes they have rights but part of them is taking responsibility and the more important part is that the rights of others take priority.

What we need is a change in attitude to excessive drinking.

It has happened/is happening in our attitude to smoking - something I never expected to see.

Adopting the continental habit of having food and drink, not drink alone, would be beneficial.
