A NEW weapon in the fight against crime is set to be unveiled – the mobile phone.
An extra 25 million pairs of eyes could help to maintain law and order in Britain thanks to new technology that allows anyone with a camera phone who witnesses a crime to simply snap it and send it directly to a police database.
Developed in the Netherlands, the idea has already been used by Dutch officers as well as in Sweden, but the manufacturers are set to approach British authorities after the software was altered for domestic use.
The manufacturers, Waleli, now believe UK police forces could be interested in the idea.
The MMS-Witness software allows users to send an image – or video – of a crime straight to the police in the form of a text. The message can be stored and if necessary forwarded to officers in that vicinity in order for them to respond.
