LABOUR suffered a new setback last night after one of its leading Scottish supporters said he was quitting the "serially mendacious and incompetent" party to join the Tories.
Paul McBride, one of Scotland's top QCs, is understood to have agreed to advise the Conservatives on justice matters and will speak at their conference next month.

McBride said the sleaze engulfing Labour had led him to change his political alleg
iance and indicated he disapproved of the scurrilous e-mails Gordon Brown's adviser Damian McBride – no relation – had sent from Downing Street.

McBride said: "I have been a supporter of the Labour party all my life. However, I now find myself in a position where I can no longer support a party that is serially mendacious and incompetent.

"Wednesday's Budget showed that Labour has been in power for too long. It is a party that now relies on smears and fears rather than policies, persuasion and hope. The sooner there is a change of Government the better, and David Cameron is that change."

McBride added: "In Scotland, Annabel Goldie has set the agenda and is delivering real change. I am delighted to be speaking at our spring conference in Perth in May – an event which will no doubt show Scotland that the Conservatives are winning again."

McBride, 44, is regarded as one of the pre-eminent counsels in Scotland and has been involved in high-profile appeals and media and criminal cases for 22 years. He sits as a member of the Scottish Legal Aid Board, administering millions of pounds of public money relating to those who require legal aid. He is the former vice-chairman of the Faculty of Advocates Criminal Bar Association.

He has been involved in various public inquiries and health and safety prosecutions, acting for a wide range of individuals of stature in Scottish and English life. He has also appeared regularly in the judicial committee of the Privy Council.

Last year McBride was Scotland's ninth-highest-earning legal aid QC, making £217,700.

Goldie said: "This is yet another sign that the Conservative party is making real progress in Scotland and I welcome Paul warmly to our ranks. His experience and knowledge, especially in the justice field, will be invaluable."

Andrew Fulton, chairman of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist party, said: "Paul is another welcome addition to our ranks. I know he will not be the last… more and more people (are] coming to the Conservative cause."

A spokesman for the Labour party said: "Mr McBride might be upset with the increase in tax for people earning over £150,000. However, the vast majority of Scots support that policy."

#7.....This is known as the "Barlinnie Defence" its used fairly often in High Court trials and juries fall for it on a regular basis. I believe that it was used again within the last few weeks.
Have you noticed that when there is DNA evidence snout in the trough lawyers say the its "contaminated" yet when its not there they ( and the press) say "there is no DNA to link my client to this crime".
With regard to Paul Mcbride I have met him on many occasions and for a QC he will talk away to an ordinary mortal like me no bother (unlike most QC,s and Advocates Snobby b,srds)He is a Paisley boy and regulary refereed football matches. With regards to the political switch ..Typical Unionista..............

It would appear that Michelle Mone has also withdrawn her, ahem.........support for Nu-Labour, (perhaps too many puns which would attract the attention of the censor available here).

Didn’t she previously promise to leave if the SNP ever came to power?

This move will neither adversely affect the Labour Party nor be to the advantage of the Tories.

People like McBride join political parties for their own benefit not from any matter of principle.

21 Absolutely. From my recollection was McBride not Donald Findlay's advocate of choice when he got in a wee bit of bother ? This is a test of what way the wind is blowing, nothing less. People bereft of principles will join any ship that is moving, that's all this is a rat jumping from one ship to the next.

The leader of the Scots Tory Party stated: "This is yet another sign that the Tory Party is making real progress in Scotland.......?"

In 1997, the Scots Tory Party was wiped out, and 11 years later, has still never recovered from this humiliating defeat!

The Scots Tory Party is like a dying patient on a life support machine, still flat-lining, and polling less than it did when Ian Lang(Who?) was last Scots Secretary!

Could it simply be the case that "one of Scotland's top earning QCs" has changed political parties because of the new Labour 50% tax rate?

If anyone thinks dumping Labour for the Tories is a good thing they are living in a fools paradise. Now more than ever the imperative for independence is a necessity.

Both wrong! The Conservatives will win the next UK general election and gain more seats in Scotland, but David Cameron is no fool. He knows that the Tories will still be a minority in Scotland and will therefore devolve much more to Holyrood including more tax powers.

He will have become one of Scotland's top defence QC's by being good at his job i.e. defending people in court to he best of his abilities and within the rules of the court. I have never met the man and don't know or care what he is like but it doesn't change the fact that people deserve and are entitled to a fair trial and he is one of the best at giving them it.

37 I rather doubt that the criminals he defends give two hoots what he does sexually as long as he gets them off, which he is quite good at doing. Findlay is the blue-nose for doing that, McBride wears the hoops. They are both exactly the same. No one is interested in their sex lives.

It's quite astonishing that there is anyone left in the Labour Party apart from the ones who make their money shafting the public. Certainly anyone with an ounce of scruples or honesty wouldn't be seen anywhere near this bunch of incompetent and dishonest @ssholes.

Joining the Tories?.....maybe not though but incredibly, even they are a thousand times less sleazy and greedy than the Labourites. In Scotland the SNP is the place to be- as long as switchers swear never ever to vote Labour again!

McBride is just doing what he has always done, get himself in where there are rich pickings. He is a Board Member for Legal Aid and of course spends a lot of time defending legal aid cases, putting the fox in charge of the chickens indeed. He and Donald Findlay have done much to help some of the worst individuals in society get off scot free, they of course have much in common with their charges, to suck as much financial blood out of the state as possible.

I notice this quote has been omitted in the above article yet sums up Labour in Scotland better than I could ever hope to (from the Times)

“I have lost faith...in the Labour lot at Holyrood, who do not have a single policy on anything, but simply criticise.”

Hits the nail squarely on the head.

not connected to the promise of a job [The Attorney General] if the conservatives get elected at the next election which looks like a real prospect
