X-rated comic book exploits end of copyright

PETER Pan is known to generations of children as the boy who never grew up.

But his sweetheart Wendy is depicted in a series of adult situations in a hugely controversial new adaptation of JM Barrie's classic tale.

In the extremely graphic graphic-novel Lost Girls, Pan's demure companion is shown in a serious of erotic
trysts.

The illustrated adult book, which depicts Tinkerbell being raped and Wendy being spied on by paedophile peeping toms, has provoked children's campaigners and devotees of the original Barrie fable to demand it be taken off the shelves.

But the author, Alan Moore – who inspired the Hollywood films V For Vendetta and The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen – insists he is taking a legitimate stance against censorship.

In 1929, Angus-born Barrie bequeathed all rights of his Peter Pan books to London's Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

This allowed hospital chiefs to prevent the X-rated tome, which has already been published in the US, from being distributed in the UK and the EU. But the copyright expired on January 1, as more than 70 years had passed since the author's death, leaving the hospital helpless to stop Lost Girls, written by Moore and illustrated by his wife Melinda Gebbie, being sold across Britain and continental Europe.

The 112-page hardback, described as the "Kama Sutra of comics", is being distributed by American firm Top Shelf Productions. Its website states: "From January 1, Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie's Lost Girls will finally be released in the UK and EU. Get your order in now as the limited supply will likely disappear within a few weeks."

As well as featuring Wendy Darling the book also depicts the "sexual awakening" of Alice in Wonderland and Dorothy from the Wizard Of Oz.

It states: "For more than a century Alice, Wendy and Dorothy have been our guides though Wonderland, Neverland and the Land of Oz of our childhoods.

"Now, like us, these three lost girls have grown up and are ready to guide us again, this time through the realms of our sexual awakening and fulfilment.

"Through their familiar fairytales they share their most intimate revelations of desire.

"Lost Girls is a work of breathtaking scope that challenges the very notion of art fettered by convention."

In the book Wendy is shown meeting Peter Pan and the Lost Boys in a park for sexual encounters.

An adolescent Alice is depicted being molested by an adult abuser, while Dorothy is pictured in compromising situations with a trio of Kansas farm-hands.

Sandra Affleck, a historian who leads Barrie themed tours in his hometown of Kirriemuir, was appalled by the idea of a pornographic Peter Pan.

She said: "This book sounds horrific. It is the complete antithesis of what Barrie thought and put on paper.

"Barrie's work is all about the magic of childhood and this new book is a pollution of that.

"I would support any measures which would stop it appearing on shelves."

Barrie enthusiast and Conservative Kirriemuir councillor Ian Mackintosh added: "I am appalled by the idea of the innocence of the original Peter Pan story being sullied by a seedy work like this."

Charity Children 1st claimed a change in the law was needed to allow Lost Girls and similar works to be made illegal.

A spokeswoman said: "Non-photographic depictions of child sexual abuse, whether cartoons or drawings, may fuel inappropriate feelings towards children and young people and be used to groom children.

"The Westminster Government has recently consulted on whether non-photographic depictions of child sex abuse should be banned, and as a charity dedicated to protecting children, we support this move."

Moore said he was prepared for a backlash against the explicit depictions of underage sex, but felt it was unjustified. He said: "These are not children. They are depictions of children.

"There are two instances of non-consensual sex in Lost Girls.

"They both more or less happen off camera and are both treated with sufficient gravity.

"We (Moore and Gebbie] believe in the absolute freedom of the human imagination as long as you can remember what's real and what's fiction.

"The only people that seem to have a problem distinguishing between reality and fantasy are psychopaths and magistrates."

The veteran graphic novelist stressed the book, set in 1914, was pro-sex but strongly anti-war. "I have been turning on my television and seeing pictures of actual, non-fictional children with their arms blown off," he said.

"When you are confronted with that kind of vision on the six o'clock news it makes all these arguments about what is permissible to depict in fiction completely laughable.

"If we can get so upset about lines on paper, but somehow cannot get upset about real flesh and blood then what kind of society are we?"

Despite its controversial themes, Lost Girls has proved to be a critical and commercial success in the US, selling 30,000 copies.

It was named as one of the top 25 best books of the year by New York-based newspaper The Village Voice and the conservative US Today praised its "intelligent writing, intricate plotlines and gorgeous Victorian-style art".

Great Ormond Street Hospital confirmed that its copyright over Peter Pan lapsed from midnight on December 31, but declined to comment on Moore's book.

I bet these Tories would give their children the Bible though. If people actually take care to sit down and read the 'good book' then they would see that it should not be allowed anywhere near children - the bible encourages gential mutilation, incest and the denegration of women (menstruation is 'monthly uncleanliness). It even denigrates childbirth as 'unclean', more so if the bairn is a girl.

The above book may not be nice, but it is for adults and deals, probably critically, with relevant issues from today's world. And again, if you want deviant sex, turn to the bible.

Good bit of free advertising for the book, though! Knowing what the book is about, will YOU buy it? I certainly won't. And it might be a good opportunity to spot the people who might a be danger to children - take photos of all of the people buying the book and I'll bet most of them are a bit odd (at best) anyway!

No such thing as bad publicity, eh?

#4, Calum - what edition of the Bible are you referring to? (Even though the reference is totally irrelevant). I don't recall any passage therein , or any Judeo-Christian interpretation which encourages, to use your term, incest or genital mutilation.

A wee bit fantastic on your part I think!

Since the boundaries of what is or isn't pornography have changed you'd have difficulty in not clearing this one. Its description reminds me of a ?popular French sex comic book with cartoon characters indulging in graphic rumpty pumpty. But sado-masochism or child sex had yet to be exploited. Agree with #7. It's all about money. The very popularity of the Barrie book has been its undoing.

Who was to be circumcised?

Abraham, his descendants and those who were bought with their money (Genesis 17:12-13). Also, all the males of a household were to be circumcised if one of them wanted to join in the Passover celebrations (Exodus 12:43-49).

However, there is a puzzle. Laws commanding circumcision are said to come through Moses (e.g. Leviticus 12), but the Children of Israel abandoned circumcision during Moses' leadership (Joshua 5: 4-7). Exodus 4: 24-26 tells us that Moses had not circumcised his own son.

This suggests several scribal traditions. In the first, Moses did not practise circumcision, and the custom was abandoned under his leadership (Joshua 5: 4-7). In the second his wife is made to conform to the practice (Exodus 4: 24-26). Finally, in the third tradition, he is given the command to circumcise from the LORD himself.

The comment about not buying the book is - by far - the most sensible comment I've seen on this page.

The porn movie industry has been usurping classic stories for decades. Little Red Riding Hood? Been done as a porn movie at least a dozen times. Also, please don't forget that many of the European folk tales that we've recycled as fuzzy, moral, sweet little fairytales for our kids started out as quite gruesome stories.

I understand some peoples' horror at the beloved J.M. Barrie's story being redone in this way however, as the previous poster said, all you have to do is not buy it and it'll disappear quite quickly.

Absolutely Disgusting!
It states: "For more than a century Alice, Wendy and Dorothy have been our guides though Wonderland, Neverland and the Land of Oz of our childhoods.

"Now, like us, these three lost girls have grown up...

I ask then, what about all the little girls who haven't grown up yet?

It seems some people feel that pornography is the new bread and butter of the world and every one should have their fair share. What a SAD state of affairs. We have enough trouble raising our children to be responsible adults then they get this rubbish thrown at them. The world is a much more sorry place to live in because of people like Alan Moore and his wife.
28

Polaris,

#24, I'm sure I won't ever read the book but if it's true what you say that Wendy is an adolecent then it's not just porn, it's child porn. That makes it even more disgusting.

Why do people feel the need to do this sort of thing? These sorts of people just can't leave a good thing good can they!

Most of you are taking the word of these people that it is pornographic. Most people who want to ban books are liars and sycophants of the highest order. I doubt that even 1 of them has read the book. One pompous ass gets on his narrow-minded soapbox and the rest run to claim their undeserved bit of limelight. Harry Potter is a perfect example, the inquisitionist tried to get that banned too. If you have 2 brain cells to rub together…NEVER…EVER…EVER take anyone’s word for anything, find out for yourself. If you don’t, 9 times out of 10 you will find that you have been made a fool of. Repeating the atrocities of the past is only made possible by people who refuse to question what they are told. Knowing Moore’s work, it is probably that (anti-despot government ideal) that he was hoping to convey when he wrote this book.

Tom Robinson saw these book baners coming when, in 1976,he wrote about the right wing backlash in "Power in the Darkness."
"Today, institutions fundamental to the British system of Government are under attack: the public schools, the house of Lords, the Church of England, the holy institution of Marriage, even our magnificent police force are no longer safe from those who would undermine our society, and it's about time we said 'enough is enough' and saw a return to the traditional British values of discipline, obedience, morality and freedom.
What we want is:"

33...Actually no, I read an interview where Alan Moore said that he wanted to raise pornography to an art form and that yes his book, was indeed, pornography. I am not saying ban the book but why could he not have written something of his own instead of desecrating the innocence of childhood by recreating these stories...the man has enough imagination of his own to do that. I mean for gawdsake...Wendy is spied on by pedophiles...Tinkerbell is raped...Wendy has sex in the park with Peter Pan and the lost boys...Dorothy has sex with farmhands and then her father...art?..art?...sorry guff more like...ANYBODY can take a childs tale and rewrite it as a piece of porn..and yes it is a book for adults but when it involves adolescents and girls having sex with their fathers then thats just seedy and downright creepy. Sorry Alan from what I have seen so far this looks just like a porny comic....nae prizes for raising it to an 'art form'...

Or perhaps you are trying to invent a British Manga...ie having comics that are full of women being abused and raped...as a form of adult entertainment?

Good lord people, could we possibly calm down on the witchunting and actually take a look at the facts here.

This is a work of literary fiction, aimed at adults, and pretty sophisticated ones at that. I mean, the book costs £50, it's not like this is something that's going to be casual purchase for the casual reader. It's an enormous slipcase set, that weighs about 6 kilos!

Yes, it features some fictional characters that have their sexual discoveries at around the age of 14, something that's true for, I would imagine, most girls, and there are some depictions of same, but they are an extremely small part of a much larger piece, and are absolutely at home in the context of the book, it's hardly gratuitous. Although there are many that would say that pornography is gratuitous by nature!

If you don't want to read about a grown up and sexualised version of the likes of Alice, Wendy or any other beloved heroine of a children's book, then don't bloody read it. It's part of a long tradition of pornographic representations of pop culture characters that go back to the tijuana bibles of the 20s & 30s, which frequently featured adolescent sex. Surprisingly, their existence hasn't spoilt the originals for generations of children, just as Lost Girls will have absolutely zero effect on the source material.

Could I please suggest to some of the more zealous objectors here that they have a look at either of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen books, to see exactly how skilled a writer Moore is, and to see the obvious passion he has for some of the literary field's finest creations? You should find them in your local library...

It's supposed to have been well received in the States, as said above, so it must have something going for it. If this makes me a paedophilic voyeur or whatever, so be it.
