Hearts 3
(Elliot 22, 29; Aguiar 49)

Kilmarnock 1
(Invincibile 8)
CALUM Elliot has taken his share of stick from the Hearts support, but it's nothing a goal or two can't sort out. Not only did he score his first for the club in over a year yesterday, he added a second shortly after, and should have helped himself to more in a performance that persuaded his many critics in the Tynecastle stands to think again.

His two strikes in the opening half hour overturned Kilmarnock's early breakthrough, and paved the way for Bruno Aguiar's decisive third, early in the second half. Then, when Hearts were awarded a penalty on the hour mark, came the real surprise. "We want Calum," chanted the home support, as though he had been their hero for years.

As it was, Aguiar took, and missed, the spot-kick, squandering Hearts' chance of a fourth, and Elliot's chance of a hat-trick. "We are not in the Christmas market," said their manager, Csaba Laszlo, by way of explanation. "My gift to Calum was not to give him the penalty. It was more important to let him enjoy some applause with five minutes left."

The 22-year-old striker was given a standing ovation when he made way for Christian Nade. Laszlo liked that, for he knows that Elliot, neither the quickest nor the most prolific forward on the club's books, isn't exactly the fans' favourite. "If they are on your side, it gives you a massive boost," said the player. "Hopefully, between now and the end of the season, I can build up that relationship."

While Hearts have been effective under Laszlo, they are crying out for a goalscorer. Elliot has netted 11 in a loan spell with Livingston this season. At Ibrox last month, his substitute appearance was credited with earning Hearts a draw. Yesterday, he replaced Nade as the team's lone forward, and was instrumental in a comfortable triumph. Third-placed Hearts are now seven points clear of Aberdeen, their nearest challengers in the SPL.

How Kilmarnock could do with some of Elliot's sharpness. They have scored only eight league goals this year, haven't won three points since December, and have now played two more games than bottom-placed Falkirk, who are just three points behind. Their manager, Jim Jefferies, insists that there have been good performances in among the bad results. Yesterday's was not one of them. And yet, they could scarcely have asked for a better start. When Mehdi Taouil's deep cross hung in the air, Danny Invincibile dashed in at the back post to crash his header high into the net. "To go in front was a bit of bonus," said Jefferies almost sheepishly. His team required only half an hour to demonstrate that they didn't deserve it.

Kilmarnock were second to everything, unable to pick up Aguiar in the hole between defence and midfield, and petrified by the repeated appearance of Elliot in scoring positions. Some 23 minutes had gone when he grabbed his first. When Aguiar delivered a devilish free-kick, goalkeeper Alan Combe parried a flick by Marius Zaliukas, and Elliot bundled the ball in.

His second came six minutes later. This time he was nipping in at the front post to turn in a low cross by Lee Wallace. That he began and ended the move that almost earned him a third just before half-time was a clear indication of his newfound confidence. On the halfway line, with his back to goal, he fed the onrushing Andy Driver, before turning and heading for the penalty area. His run into space was timed to perfection, but when he collected the return from Driver, his weak shot dribbled wide.

All of which vindicated Laszlo's decision to stick with his tried and trusted formation, despite finding himself with the resources to play two up front. Three supporting midfielders – Driver on the left, Aguiar in the middle and David Obua on the right – proved to be more than enough trouble for Kilmarnock. The Ayrshire side briefly rallied before the interval, mainly with the help of Kevin Kyle's head, but any hope they had of a recovery was snuffed out within four minutes of the restart. When Aguiar picked out Elliot on the edge of the six-yard area, the striker withstood Manuel Pascali's challenge, and did just enough to lay off a loose ball. With Kilmarnock's defence slow to respond, Aguiar seized upon the opportunity, ramming it high into the net from unmissable range.

Thereafter, even the heads of Jefferies and his assistant, Billy Brown, seemed to go down, which is a measure of Kilmarnock's plight. Wallace, surely a Scotland full-back of the not-too-distant future, fairly stretched them down the left, several times threatening to bring about a fourth goal. His inviting cross was headed over by Ruben Palazuelos, and his spinning shot also was too high. An hour had been played when referee David Somers awarded Hearts a penalty. When substitute Ryan O'Leary appeared to bring down Elliot in the box, Aguiar grabbed the ball and headed for the spot. His low effort cannoned off the base of the left-hand post. O'Leary had the chance to make amends with 12 minutes left, but his header at the back post drifted away from the target. In the SPL, his team are doing much the same.

Well done Calum. Last season he didn't deserve to be in the team. Ok he may have lost confidence but Frail was wrong to keep picking him. The loan move to Livingston was the right move for him. Also Csaba has taken his time with him and made him a better player.

Well done Clum...well done.
(Now there's a phrase I never thought I'd say without a hint of sarcasm)
Bruno should have let you take the penalty.

Good performance from Hearts despite some slack defending to let Invincible nod in the opener.

Tott Well said
Really enjoyed the game yesterday and i was one of those calling on Elliot for the penalty and that is one name i never thought i would be signing
Still cant get used to Csaba's subsitutions would love to see Nade and Elliot together once also bemused when he put Jonson on at CB and moved Kari forward although he changed that back quickly enough
We are in third on merit and hopefully can take something of Celtic
Cant make that game so will be glued to the thread for some honest reports
Newcastle Jambo is going so will read his doom and gloom on Sunday

Looks like we are in agreement there then i could not understand the two changes especially when Karapidis is better at the back and Eggert is better in the middle of the park a little strange but at least he changed it back again
Would have liked the penalty to have went in so we could really have went for it and played to up front although somehow i dont think we will see that this season
Delighted with Elliot and if he could keep that up he has just saved the club a fortune

Huggs. We could beat celtic 9-0 and NJ would still manage to pick holes in the game and put a negative, anti VR slant on it. Dare say my posts will be influenced by the intake of alcohol pre and post match so no doubt worth very little also :o) very confident for next week, i think celtic will be lucky to leave with a point. Was looking forward to reading some interesting posts on the Hearts game and nearly all I get is that prat Pundit still trying to act out his 'superior' Rangers supporter handing down his wisdom to Hearts roll.

Doesnt he realise how much people dislike him?

His posts are total P.I.S.S anyway.

Hopefully the SFA will now see how much anti Hearts Brines is. Maybe they do but it won't make any difference to them. Surely it is the SFA's duty to look at every appeal, they may not be allowed to change referees decision but in Brines case they can see how incompetent and anti Hearts he is.

If Hearts and the other teams keep up the form of the last 7 games in the final 7 of the season then I think they could get a result next week against Celtic and third place will be their for definite.

Celtic 7 3 4 0 16 4 13

Well done Clum and nice gesture by Csaba to remove him 1 minute from time to allow him to take the ovation he deserved.

That's the third penalty we've missed this season so more practice needed. Good set of results again yesterday so a wholly satisfactory Saturday afternoon.

I think that the contract extensions for a number of players are hanging fire waiting to see if we qualify for Europe. Would imagine Vlad wants to make them self-financing but I would hate to see us qualify then have to take on European games with a diminished squad if the policy backfires.

Could just end up making ourselves look silly. No place to blood youngsters especially with the games starting so early in the season.

Now we don't have to worry about going a goal down as we now have the character to drive on and win games. Compare that to last season where losing a goal would be losing 3pts. We have the confidence to out a thump celtic next week but as usual, the game will no doubt lie in the hands of the referee....

Bleeding Heart,

#58 - As you say, qualifying for Europe with a threadbare side might make us "look silly". Not something one usually associates with Romanov's management.

Do you therefore think Romanov should act now and secure these players on new contracts?

25

Jambo-ree,

05/04/2009 11:43:45
#62 Yes, I have consistently said we need to act sooner rather than later. Elliot, Robbie, Bruno and Kari would be a big miss if they were to be allowed just to drift away.

Maybe now that Top 6 is achieved and with a decent cushion for the Euro spots some action me be forthcoming. But as with all things with Vlad I'm not holding my breath.

Every game after the split will be a cup final but we are now well placed and can only lose it so, yes, he should be getting things fixed up now.
26

Bleeding Heart,

05/04/2009 12:14:43
#63 - I agree entirely.

Mind you, there was that business of the fax which was supposed to secure Farkas (Csaba' choice as Berra's replacement) and which mysteriously arrived late.

It's surely inconceivable that Romanov would allow another botch-up like this to happen again - isn't it?

Hoo Haa 05/04/2009 13:26:48

Slipped to second with bad forecast on the Falkirk - Rangers game thought the bairns might sneak it with all the troubles at Ibrox, hibs took the foot of the pedal and payed the price took that for 2-1 DU

It was Elliot's movement off the ball that was most impressive. We all knew he could turn players and had an eye for goal but it was the work ethic and basic body language that previously let him down. Glad to see that the player we saw three years ago hasn't gone for good. Best all round display by a Hearts forward for two or three years. Just a reminder though Calum - watch the huffy gestures as after twenty minutes yesterday a pass for you went astray and you did the old usual by throwing your hands in the air and shrugging your shoulders - just a wee one and one only - but something that needs eradicated.
Very pleased for CE - just as I was for Lee Wallace when he got back to his old ways in the Autumn after losing his way. Two good young players - AND Scottish.

#78 'I'll be back' could be his catchphrase but unfortunately he just never goes away. A bit like mould growing in a dingy, damp and smelly bedsit. Perhaps one that's occupied by a sad and lonely person permanently attached to his computer acting like a puppy when he gets faint praise from some other loser.

Poor, poor stuff over the last few days, and very boring. The Ferguson/McGregor saga must really be hurting big time.

BazJT,

#83 True, there would be less to talk about. But instead of the drivel currently spouted people might be more inclined to 'debate' football matters. Unfortunately 'debate' takes two or more individuals who have the ability to listen to other points of view.

#80 smithy

I don't think ability has ever been his problem, it's his attitude that stinks, that's why fans got on his back in the first place. Csaba appears to know this and is hopefully going to get the best out of him by keeping him well grounded. Here's hoping.
38

BazJT,

05/04/2009 20:09:25
A few posters reckoned Elliot was out of contract in the Summer and we'd lose him just as he seems to be showing something like his potential. As far as I know he's contracted for another two years so there's time to get more out of him, if he knuckles down ...

I agree, the abuse he was getting was out of order. Unfortunately Elliot is not the first or last to get the treatment from Hearts 'fans'. I have to say I think we're pretty bad for that kind of treatment of players.
