New Iran nuclear sanctions 'in weeks'

Published Date: 02 December 2007
LEADING powers may have an agreement within weeks on a third UN sanctions resolution against Iran over its nuclear programme, a French diplomat said last night after talks in Paris.
"The meeting was held in a positive spirit. The elements allow us to project that we could have a resolution in the short term," the official said.

The official said a compromise text on a new resolution would be circulated among the six countrie
s involved in the talks - the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany - this week. He said he was "relatively optimistic" about having a resolution in the coming weeks.

The talks were held a day after the collapse of an 18-month EU effort to persuade Iran to stop uranium enrichment. The French official called those talks "a disaster."

On Friday, EU envoy Javier Solana held meetings with Saeed Jalili, Iran's senior nuclear negotiator, in London. The meeting had been considered a last chance for Iran to give in to UN pressure and freeze its enrichment programme before an EU report on Iran's nuclear programme that will be used in the discussion of new sanctions.

"Our objective remains the opening of negotiations [on Iran's nuclear programme]," the official said, "but all the efforts to open negotiations are going nowhere."

The US, France and Britain are urging quick and tough new sanctions, but statements by Russia and China have suggested they are sceptical.

But the French official insisted that there were no "deep differences" among the six countries at yesterday's talks.

While Iran insists it has a right to peaceful use of enrichment to generate power, others fear the activity could be misused to create the core of nuclear warheads.

The UN Security Council imposed sanctions in December 2006 and March this year. The current set bans Iranian arms exports and freezes the assets of 28 people and groups involved in its nuclear and missile programmes.

Why all the faffing about? The Iranian clerical elite are racing to get a bomb to threaten Israel and dominate its neighbours. We don't want that to happen. We really don't. They think we don't mean it. Give them a short date to stop, then let the US and Israel bomb out all their nuclear kit if they don't see sense. Iranians are lovely people, I know lots of Iranian refugees here, but if the people back home can't sort out their government then their country will have to take what's coming.

Why do 'we' want to be concerned with 'them' and their war? Israel and Iran. Unless you invest in energy futures, ie. oil. An Iranian missile cannot reach Scotland. Be like Bush in his madness, and rally to the call. Or be a Scotsman.

Guga II,

Rockall 02/12/2007 12:08:26

When are the UN going to implement sanctions against Israel? Not a word is ever said about their nuclear programme or the fact that they already possess over 200 nuclear weapons. Moreover, they are a terrorist, racist state that is hell bent on the genocide of the Palestinian people.

4

Gnasher,

02/12/2007 12:49:10

Guga, Israel is a democratic multinational state where people are freer that anywhere else in the region. That's why muslim refugees from Sudan seek asylum there.

The Iranian president is a holocaust denier who has repeatedly made it clear that he wants to see the Jewish people liquidated. Hamas, which runs part of the Palestinian entity, recently said that "Palestine is Arab Islamic land, from the river to the sea, including Jerusalem... there is no room in it for the Jews." Israel exists, and is right to defend itself from people who want to destroy it.

Certainly, feel sorry for palestinian arabs led by corrupt and evil god-bothering dictators who use religion and the prospect of the evil west and the jews to unite their subjects, while oppressing their own christian and jewish minorities. But don't confuse their plight with the genocidal agenda of their leaders. And don't describe the self-defence of Israel with the true genocides perpetrated by states like Sudan and the former baathist Iraq, as well as the current baathist Syria's crimes and Iran's persecution of its arab minority in Khuzestan.

Funny that.... 02/12/2007 13:19:03

Funny that the same parcel of Rogues, and their dumb supporters, who wanted are war with Iraq are now clamouring for a war with Iran.

Were they "right" about Iraq or lying through their teeth? WE all know the answer to that.

But hey, go ahead, attack Iran and watch the price of Oil at least double from were it is now causing a global Depression.

"When are the UN going to implement sanctions against Israel? Not a word is ever said about their nuclear programme or the fact that they already possess over 200 nuclear weapons."

Pathetic. It has been repeatedly pointed out to the Israel-haters on this site in most of the threads on Iran and nuclear weapons, that Israel has done nothing illegal in possessing nuclear weapons (assuming she does). Israel has not signed the no0n-Porliferation Treaty, and is not obliged to do so. Nor have India, Pakistan or North Korea. Meawhile, Iran did siogn, so Iran developing nuclear weapons IS illegal under international law. There is no basis for sanctions against Israel whatsoever, and if you continue to repeat this absolute lie, then you are doing so owing solely to your deranged hatred of Israel.

And I think that you will find that it is your Iranian Government soul-mates who are a terrorist, racist state that is hell bent on the genocide of a people.

Well your contemporaries should not have based their military HQ, a legitimate target for attack, in a civilian building.

Blame the British government for those deaths.

media disinformation 02/12/2007 15:25:48

Can I Just ask Gnasher where he has read that the Iranian President wants “Jewish people liquidated when there is 25000 Jewish Iranians living in Iran may I add they are also still free to visit relatives in Israel and even telephone and write to them, I wish people would be more careful as to what they say.
It may be a good idea if you could read and watch the below links I am Iranian and I can assure you most of what you read is disinformation as to what Ahmadinejad has said a perfect example is “that Israel should be wipe off the map” incorrectly translated by MEMRI he actually said “the Zionist regime occupying Jerusalem should be erased from the page of time” this is no reference to the Jewish people.

Just like the UN without unity or teeth, eh....?

Just a note from a person with first hand experience with the Mullahs of Satanic Republic; They are a group power hungry gangsters in the clergy cloth who will do ANYTHING; absolutely ANYTHING to dominate entire world; and that is not exaggeration.

They have executed over 100,000 political opponents including late stage pregnant women, persisted in a war that cost a millions lives. Ruined a country that was perhaps the most prosperous nation in the area before they seized it; this gangster regime has nothing in mind except domination.

At the time being they are cutting every national necessity and paying every penny to weapons and nuclear pirate traders in order to develop atomic bomb and long-range rockets that could reach entire Europe and soon Eastern US.

I know these sub-human mullahs; the minute thy got the bomb they will use it.

And stop being naïve; they don’t need long range missiles to produced energy! They don’t even need to spend billions to produce nuclear energy based electricity; natural gas in BURINING in flames in numerous places; that is FREE gas, which is FREE energy and can be converted to electricity cheaply. They have enough natural gas for next 1000 years.

Today along with developing nuclear arms and long range missiles they are engaged in heavy international public manipulation. They finance any entity that indoctrinates public opinions against their nemesis and enemies. They are also beginning new draft system to ensure creation of a 2 million strong army.

Their plots are sinister and REQUIRE manipulations of international public opinions; don’t fall for it. Don’t be naïve. They will continue building their dooms-day arsenal as long as they see they can manipulate you against the opposing entities.

Public opposition to a war against Satanic Republic is a green pass for them; they KNOW the international forces wont be able to act against them if not supported by public opinion.

Do not b

THANK YOU ZERO; I did not know that Satanic Republic allows the "Jewish people" to make phone calls and visit relatives. That is amazing! Nowhere in the world Jewish People have such liberties. I mean what else they could ask for; that ungrateful people!

What more do they want? May be freedom to walk in the street? I think that is excessive; even in American Jails we don’t let people go and walk in the streets; (the can visit relatives and write letters though).

I am amazed; I think the Satanic Republic must be dubbed the most democratic and free country in the world; don’t you think so?

And Bahaii's; they just love to be hanged. That is another story though.

Freedom to write to relatives and even visit them? That is unheard of!

ZERO; you da man!

I have had first hand experience of the mullahs regime and mild run ins of their revolutionary guards and their courts (monkeys are more organised and frighting) but the fact that Iran has Jewish poeple living in Iran and the fact they can visit Israel shows that the regime does recognise Israeli rights to exist(and if it was not for Bush Adminisrations incompetents Iran was going to recognise Israel right to exist

http://www.esquire.com/features/iranbriefing1107

-even if they produce this bomb how on earth are they going to use it without wiping out all the poeple in the surrounding area including their so called allies. If they wanted to use wmds why have they not used their Biological weapons that they have had for the past 10 years which will prove alot more localised and would save all the sacred sites that their religion respects. Also remember during the Sadam-Iran war when Iranian troops were being gased with support of Eygpt and west including the US Israel was actually supplying the mullahs with spare parts for the military(Oliver North era)this shows that Israel is actually a natural ally of Iran against the Arabs since both are the only two non Arab states in the M.East.My advice to America is if you want the mullahs gone and you want liberals to succeed let the poeple of Iran change the regime we are all paying the price of destruction of democracy in Iran in 1906( by Russia/G.Britain) and 1953(by USA/G.Britain) no Iranian including mullahs want a third undignified enforced foreign regime change hence the nuclear issue.
P.S
The mullahs had suspended enrichment for two years of no avail the "crazies"in Washington would not guarantee that they would not attack IranAnd thats all they wanted.

Quite novel. A national of the only nation to use nuclear weapons on civilians, comes out with a rant that would pride any religious fanatic, and complains about another country having nuclear weapons!!!

Were we meant to listen or laugh?

after they restablished relations with england & france, they forced us to say death only to usa, israel.
they politiclly of cource not say death to israel but they want to wipe israel and jewish from earth and then maybe cristians.
in islam a moslem girl should not marriage jewish or christian people.
they told us is school when we was little boys that all people except moslems are not clean (is arabic najes)if touched(jewish and christians and ...) them,go and take a bath to clean yourself then u can pray god.
yes they will do anything for obtaining power, anything .
they have killed many many people in iran.many peoples.
iranian people can not oppose to them because they dont belive anything even god.they killed everyone that opposed to them.
u can ask your embassador in iran.
think someone say u that there is a big country that pops gowern in it.iran is like that

17

iman,

02/12/2007 22:49:45

iraninan poeple are that they want nuclear weapons.
iraninain people don't like west ,why?
beacuse they do business with iran for oil.most of the nuclear tools has been imported from west.
they danger iraninan and their people only for money.
west should war with dictatorship always, not just they are going to build nuclear weapons.
now if iran put the nuclear issue away, just this west will say iran gowernment is very good.
they should issue sanctions against iran because of human rights first, then nuclear weapons.
war will only kill people but a thinkful and restricted war is good .this war should wipe off first mullah and their dictatorship then nuclear sites.but i think they will ruin the second and will not mind iranian people.

Stockbridge,

02/12/2007 23:36:03

My name is really Father Christmas, known to many as Santa Claus.

Unknown to many I have lived all my life in Iran, and wondered if I should post this without using capitals, so it was not as apparent I normally post as Stockbridge.

In my country since the departure of the all singing, all dancing Shah, life has been far worse and I doubt it can ever be the same.

Without doubt the Shah was best at dancing the Hokey Cokey in the entire world. But since his forced departure to live in that wonderful country Americoo (sorry my English not that goodington) by those evil nasty mullahs who have replaced him.

The mullahs know nothing of the Hokey Cokey, and many are known to even put their left leg out when our Shah would have known to be shaking it all about.

Clearly invasion and revolution is called for. This would have nothing to do with our oil, natural resources, the plummeting dollar, and the US falling to being the worlds third largest economy behind China and the EU in one year.

Obviously this is similar to the claims Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, but this time we really, really are a nation unable to dance the Hokey Cokey.

We must return Iran to be a nation of proud people, under a good leader who has been trained in this dance in the USA.

And that's what it's all about.

Well said Iman. Welcome to this message baord. What you say reflects in part much of what I know from friends in Iran and Iranian friends in exile.

Ignore Stockbridge - he is just trying to be clever.

That's neat! It seams anyone who had any experience with mullahs is in the same page; that those mullahs are no-good gangs that Iran and rest of the world will be much better off without them.

This is kind of refreshing; hopefully see you all in a free Iran soon.

21

NY Rob,

US 03/12/2007 02:08:25

ZERO:
See, Satanic Republic, despite all that pretentious claim of control, has no control on what is going on in Iran. The Sunni insurgents of Iraq and Afghanistan travel through Iran freely and without being detected.

The scenario is not mass delivery of nukes via rockets; but handing or losing the small size nukes or dirty bombs to those who will use it against west.

The minute that any type of nuclear device releases in the west, namely US, Iran will be hold responsible and therefore retaliated against. The minute that even a small size dirty bomb sets of anywhere in the west; the international public opinion will support full nuclear retaliation against Iran.

The problem is that many in the east side of Volga are looking forward to it. Iran will never be able to be a true nuclear power; but greatest escape goat in the nuclear world. This is just another dumfounded political miscalculation by the Satanic Regime who thing they know what the hell they are doing. They don’t and Iranian will pay for it dearly.

Iran is just being used as a proxy against US, as it was Iraq in its last years of Saddam. In this international Machiavellian plot, Iran is just a clueless peon!

22

Nikto,

03/12/2007 04:36:04

It is no secret, and should not be debated that the views of many middle eastern extremists view the west and israel as a threat. This is what I know to be fact. I won't debate anyone that hasn't done the research for themselves. I have heard the term "The Great Satan" used as a noun to describe the west by more extremists than I can count.
The Iranian situation is not worth arguing as to whether they have at this time, or have been developing a nuclear weapons programme. The argument lies in the fact that they have admitted to 3,000 working centrifuges, that allow them to enrich to whatever end they desire. The desire of a country that was cut off from trade relations three decades ago for their instability and violence from extremist groups working inside the region. With an unstable government, Iran could very easily lose control of a warhead or two. Then world war 3, by default. Republican or Democrat would have no hesitation in retaliation, as the first strike from Iran would probably land inside Iraq, destabalizing the barely walking country.
I am not ready for full scale invasion, but I am also not willing to sit back and hope that Iran has the best intentions. Iraq is not Iran. Iraq never openly admitted to having a nuclear capability, with the UN and IAEA finding highly enriched uranium and nuclear warhead plans. So that needs to be put to bed.
This is a lose, lose situation. But which loss would be worse?
