Iran in chaos as Mousavi 'ready for martyrdom'

Published Date: 21 June 2009
DEFEATED presidential candidate Mirhossein Mousavi told supporters last night he was "ready for martyrdom" as protestors clashed once again with police on the streets of Tehran.
Mousavi also called for a national strike if he is arrested and as darkness fell across the capital last night, rooftop cries of "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) sounded out in an echo of the tactics used in the 1979 Islamic revolution against the Sh
ah.

Earlier, in an act fraught with symbolic significance, a suicide bomber blew himself up at the mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the father of Iran's Islamic revolution, while unrest continued across Tehran in defiance of a ban on demonstrations.

Riot police deployed in force, firing teargas, using batons and water cannon to disperse protesters.

Witnesses said 2,000 to 3,000 were on the streets, fewer than the hundreds of thousands earlier in the week, but a clear challenge to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who used a speech on Friday to endorse disputed election results that gave hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a landslide victory. He warned of "bloodshed and chaos" if the protests continued.

Yesterday, former prime minister Mousavi , a product of the Islamic establishment, made clear he would not back down. "In a public address in south-western Tehran, Mousavi said he was ready for martyrdom and that he would continue his path," a Mousavi ally said.

A witness to the address said Mousavi, centre of protests unprecedented in the 30 years of the Islamic Republic, appeared to anticipate action against him. "Mousavi called on people to go on national strike if he is arrested," he said.

Renewing his calls for the election to be re-run in a letter to the country's top legislative body, he added: "These disgusting measures (election rigging] were planned months ahead of the vote… considering all the violations… the election should be annulled."

The scale of the demonstrations in Iran, a major oil exporter embroiled in dispute with major powers over its nuclear programme, has taken Iranians and foreign governments by surprise. Hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets in largely peaceful protests, though state media said seven or eight protesters were shot dead last week.

The attack on Khomeini's mausoleum is likely to inflame passions among Iranians who revere the man who led a movement that overthrew the western-backed shah in 1979. It was not clear who carried out the bombing, but such an incident could be cited by authorities in justifying a crackdown.

The bomber was killed and three others were wounded, according to TV reports.

So we should just shut up or the bad guys will get really bad?

I think you are mistaken if you think this is being driven by the west.

This is a population angry over the misrule they have had to suffer and when they attempt to change things through the ballot box having their will thwarted.

The support for Mousavi has more to do with failed economic policies and Ahmendinajad reducing them to an international laughing stock than it has do with Irans nuclearization.

Western governments have only been expressing concern about the disproportionate force being used against an ostensibly peaceful protest.

Lets look at it this way, Iran is run by a nutcase, another nutcase is willing to go for martyrdom, thought that was about religion not politics. Some head benber blows himself to smiterennes in front of a monument to another monumetal nutter. Slightly worrying. And when you add nukes to the equasion, very worrying. Feel sad for the Iranians.

Appalling that in stories about the Iranian's struggle I am forced to ask myself - why do we see AGAIN the thick-fisted hand of the Chinese Secret Service, with multiple postings here on the Scotsman's comment pages?

Does the British Directorate have a dedicated new Scotland Desk? Also, fellow Scots, take note of the tone. Not only is Iran none of our business (and the cheek of being told that by a Chinaman beggars belief, still I'll let that go!) but the language used is now more modified to UK ears.

The same Chinese agents that wrote previously on these pages kept peppering their comments with "dude" when referring to Scotsman readers. Mysteriously that has now stopped. Actually it stopped after they were previously challenged as being inauthentic.

Now their idiomatic English uses "Nah" for "no", to show how authentic they are. But that usage is mixed with absurdly clunky wording like "[demonstrators] would not risk getting beat if they followed the law and rule of the land" Very poorly said. Still, they are learning every time their poor performance is picked upon.

The greater question is why? Why is China devoting security resources to train their operatives in passable idiomatic English? Or is it simply that they are seeking to influence the debate in Scotland. Either way - we should be concerned.

For China to play down another country's democratic flexing as 'mobs' flouting the 'rule of law' is reprehensible, and says a lot about Chinese paranoia.

Theirs is a harsh dictatorship. They brook no dissent in their own country - but synthetically revel in our pluralism. Let them. I wouldn't stop this exercise by China's Secret Service - but I will watch it, and I urge you all to do likewise.

Not to get off point, viz Iran - Chinese operative postings here are irrelevant -"

Wrong. The point is, Chinese almost DO control the conversation.

1) With a 'cyber-war' - on a 'small' scale by infiltrating and controlling blogging, (The Scotsman is a good example) by deleting pro-western conversation and continually extolling the many virtues of communism;

2) at the international level by manipulating oil supply and prices and selling weapons to further militarize thug nations and dictators such as Iran, Sudan, Venezuela;

3) and controlling conversations at the diplomatic level at the UN by supporting massive violations of human rights and decency...

They also spell properly. They do not employ second rate American spelling, which is odd. So I must say that Stephen has a point, although as I said to him earlier, who cares who they are, they offer entertainment.

How utterly pathetic that ANY post should ever be pulled.
If you have ever requested that a post be pulled, and you will know who you are, you must accept that you are a fan of communism and dictatorship. By allowing people to read what others have written you allow ALL the people to make up their own minds on the comments. By asking for it to be removed you are expressing your carnal tendencies for the ownership of others and their views. You cannot handle their words because they are either too close to the bone, thus truthful or they are insulting, thus hurtful. No matter what words are written, unless ALL OF THEM are protected, all of the people cannot read them, and all of the people should be permitted to read them.
So if you have ever requested a post be removed, you must accept that there is a Stalin within you trying to get out.
Rather challenge a post as opposed to getting it removed.

First of all, I think the Scotsman is such a little backwater rag that the CCP has probably not even heard about it.
There is only one poster in China - a self confessed Canadian - who continually extolls the many virtues of communism. I tend to be more pragmatic about it.
Of course it must be a shock to your western system to find that not all Chinese people are cowering under their bed for fear of saying something wrong. But live with it. We are China, we are the centre of the world and we are here.
