Inverness CT 0 - 3 Hearts: Elliot's double rekindles hope for Hearts

STEVIE Frail had demanded a reaction from his team after their humiliation at the hands of Rangers on Wednesday night.
The fans simply demanded more cut and thrust. In the end they all got what they wanted.

Two goals from Calum Elliot also helped calm fears that the side lacks a goal-getter following the departure of top scorer Andrius Velicka.

Not of the Lithuanian's class, he was still on hand yesterday to ensure that all three points went back to Edinburgh with Hearts and kept alive the hopes of a top-six finish. For Inverness that target is becoming increasingly distant.

The opening goal came in the 21st minute when an Andrew Driver corner was swung into the area and found an unmarked and appreciative Christos Karipidis.

His header left the home keeper Michael Fraser with no chance.

It was a lead that was pretty much justified on the evidence of the early play, with Hearts the more adventurous side. It was the first real shot on target from either side, though, and with the second Hearts had doubled their advantage.

It was a beautifully carved out goal and one which reminded sceptics that Christian Nade has the skills to do a job for the capital side whenever he can be bothered harnessing them to some endeavour.

Yesterday, Salius Mikoliunas made the quick break and played him in and not only did he did make the run, covering plenty ground, but he also beat Inverness defenders Phil McGuire and Grant Munro as he homed in on goal, before presenting Elliot with a perfect cross ball delivery.

While Russell Duncan was tracking back he couldn't do anything to stop the striker's first time, right-footed effort which he slammed the ball past Fraser.

It was Elliot's first league goal for the Tynecastle side in two years and the ideal confidence boost for both forwards after their impotent display on Wednesday night.

It wasn't the first time in recent weeks where Inverness gave the opposition a two-goal start before taking an interest in a match.

Spurred on by the Hearts goals they forced their way into the play, with Don Cowie and hitting just wide of Steve Banks' goal in the 36th minute. Three minutes later the same player took advantage of indecision in the Hearts rearguard but having done enough to earn himself a shot at goal he sclaffed at it and failed to connect properly.

But it wasn't the worst case of profligacy.

As the final minutes of the first half ebbed away, Dougie Imrie sent in a cross from wide on the right and it seemed a certainty that Marius Niculae would reduce the scoreline deficit. Instead he managed to get under the ball, and failed to get the power and direction necessary.

A minute later it was Ross Tokely's turn to be the provider and played a pass into the six yard box but although the striker slid into meet it, he managed to again get under it and scoop it away from the goal.

Two golden chances but no goals and after finishing the first half so promisingly it was a blow to concede another goal so soon after the restart. It was Elliot who again did the damage, showing great awareness and a deft finish. It was again Mikoliunas who had applied the initial pressure but when the ball was cleared it was only as far as Elliot and rather than skelp it or play it back into the melee of men, he saw that Fraser was off his line and chipped the ball into the back of the net. One goal in two years and then suddenly two in one game. No wonder the fans were treating him to one or two chants in his favour.

It was the killer blow for Inverness but a reminder that while Hearts were down after Wednesday night, they aren't out.

Very Good performance and good to see not only the team playing well but Elliot and Miko aswell for a change.

What a difference from Wednesday this time we put a bit of effort in and got the rewards.
A lot more results will be needed and if the same work rate and composure in front of goal is shown we can finish off the season strongly at least.

The 2 goals for Elliot especialy will do his confidence power of good and if he is going to be picked then at least keep on scoring a few aswell as setting them up, he will prove me wrong if he can do that and maybe a run of games will do it for him. Really hope so time will tell.

Eerily quiet in here strange that when Hearts haven't lost!

Good result indeed, we have got to keep moving forward up the league, sorry to put a damper on it but the HMFC should be winning these games consistantly, Billy Davies say`s he would take the job, well I think he would be the proper man for the job if he could bring his own players in and pick the team obviously.

First things first, congratulations Hearts on a fine victory. It would appear that Elliot does have goals in him, how many remains to be seen...

Secondly, yes that gap is only 5 points now (this in reference to last nights thread where many of the more enthusiastic supporters of the self annointed 'big' team were talking about the league placings) but the difference is very little in terms of how we actually shape up as sides.
We played a good side and got beat 0-2 you played a bad side and won 0-3, that pretty much sums up both of our ablities and, in many ways, seasons, right there. As for the we've had such a bad season and we can still catch the Hibees mentality Hibs have had there worst ever run of results in the SPL this season so we're not looking at this being a straight to DVD classic for us either. Lets face it both of our teams have benifitted from every other side taking points against each other, and no one team standing out as being particularily good...

As for Billy Davies, he says he's interested in the job but as yet no-one from HOM has contacted him.
I think the question should be asked, why has no-one spoken to him? He is one of the most obvious targets for the job, british experience et al, but he's not on the radar at a club that are proporting to be in the market and actively looking for a managerial appointment??? Not even a phone call to gauge his interest???
Beggars belief really, I mean honestly...

12 points to play for before the split. God knows how many we'll pick up between now and then as we don't know which team will turn up.

Good score for Hearts some off the football played was the best ive seen for a long time,Miko,Nade were alot better than they have been .Frail stuck by Elliot and it payed off, maybe he does have something after all.Still alot to play for tho.Pride as well as points.Frail should possible be given the manager of the month award ,he has held them together quite well.

Gordon Brown warns about Bom or Bust economy - seems is way of much of our support.

So many feelings are based on the last game.

After Rangers, all was deepest depression, nothing right everything should be changed.

After yesterday, all is coming around for many - well until we play a top 6 team.

WE can only measure the long term and having played 2 games more than both we are 32 points behind Rangers compared to only 20 ahead of Gretna, this shows the huge gulf between us and a very ordinary Rangers side.

Is it good enough - no. Will a top 6 finish mean anything - no. Anyone spotted an interested owner attending Tynecastle every match - no. Any sign of promised manager - no.

Well done Hearts, and if anyone had a bet on for Elliot to score a brace, the bookie would take a hammering.
Like the Rangers aftermath, let's not over cook the result, however, after the hammering on Wednesday this is a real tonic.
#7 You need to appreciate that this was the first time in two seasons that Elliot has scored, and if you think that's ok, I don't.
He's received criticism on merit and he get's a pat on the back for yesterday.
I am absolutely convinced he's not good enough, despite scoring twice yesterday.

I don't think Elliot should have been in the side based on past performances. He didn't get his place on merit. Stevie Frail was stubborn he would come good. However the lad did well yesterday and obviously must play with Nade next game. This in my eyes doesn't mean he has made it. He may be a better opportunist than we think if he manages to get himself in box more often to put away chances.

Good result at a difficult venue. The fact that these players can pick and choose when to play well is testiment to their lack of respect for the club. I dont think my boss would be to pleased if i turn up on Wednesday and sit on my butt because I can be bothered then three days later decide that I want to be part of the team.
At least Elliot has motivated himself through out the abuse that has been thrown at him and he has never said anything other than he is proud to be a Jambo.

As much as the defeat against rangers wasn't anything lile a crisis, 2 goas for Elliot doens't make him a great player either.

Hop Elliot proves me and about 95% of Hearts fans and prove he is actually a good player but it'll take a lot of convincing...

Mornin guys,
Great result yesterday, well done to Elliot, with a bit of luck he could have seemingly had his hattrick. Hopefully this will give him a bit of a confidence boost. It was also good to see a couple of younger players in the squad yesterday Glen and Ridgers. Hopefully more can be introduced between now and the end of the season.

Onto other things and Billy Davies. Ive been told that seemingly He is to be contacted within the next 48hrs by Hearts. Stevie Frail is supposed to be backing his appointment and the rumour going about will be his assistant. If this happens and Davies' gets the job it will go some way to appeasing a lot of us Hearts fans and calming a lot of unrest, because despite a good result yesterday, these are issues that need fixing, and i still stick to my word of not purchasing a season ticket for next year unless a manager is good standing is appointed, and other issues dealt with.
19

Surelynot,

Edinburgh 02/03/2008 11:35:42
GF - Interesting about Davies. Is your source reliable?

Great result yesterday. We need to see this level of effort and commitment as the standard, not just after we get humped 4-0. This has happened before when we got beaten by Dundee United at home only to see the standards slip again.

The source without saying to much is an immediate relative of a player within the first team. Although ill add, remember sometimes the players do not know whats going on or know the full story behind whats going on upstairs, and like us fans will from time to time probably have their own gueses. but ive been passed a few usefull snippets in the past, that have turned out to be correct. Basically what ill say is although a reputable source its not a cast iron guarantee all the time.
22

Hysterical Jambow,

02/03/2008 11:54:01
If the "reputable source" is a member of the press - forget it, it'll be nonsense. Struglling to remember the last thing they predicted ans were accurate about us!

Don't think Davies is wise just now, Frail should be given the team until the split.

No point in possibly messing up the improvements seen over recent weeks. We are at last looking potential top six material, this has to be our "settled for" aim this season.

Settler for being the operative statement...
23

Jambo Number 1,

Where is the clown Mixu 6-2 today?

Why do idiots like #4 put "quotes" around big when in reference to Hearts being the biggest team from Edinburgh???

Rangers 53 46
Celtic 67 48
Aberdeen 94 78
Dundee Unt 59 54
Kilmarnock 77 78
Motherwell 118 96
ICT 5 5
Falkirk 75 65
St Mirren 83 87
Gretna 1 3

So, compare Hearts and Hibs in terms of the other teams in the SPL. Hearts have won 632. Hibs have won 560.

Hearts could stop playing for 2 years and Hibs would have to win every single game to get anywhere close to the winning margin that Hearts have compared to Hibs.

And lets not forget I have not even mentioned this one:

Hearts wins 108 HIbernian wins 64.

~Hibs are and always will be living in Hearts shadow.

We put quotes around "BIG" when referring to Hearts in order to emphasize how ludicrous this adjective is when used in conjunction with them.

Billy Davies wants the Hearts job? How desperate IS this man to get back into management?

Can't believe some people are having a go at Foulkes for saying what many fans were thinking. I don't think he is as easily swayed as some on here just because of one win.

Anyway, I fund it frustrating seeing what we're capable of when we put everything into it, and seeing what we are capable of when we don't.

Hopefully the front two remember how much they enjoy the praise come the enxt match. Nade in particular ha so much to offer, when he can be bothered.

Varied comments about a new manager - Folk (myself definately) have been banging their gums for months about Billie Davies - his profile is similar to a certain George Burley's prior to us signing him.
I would actually be shocked if Hearts did the obvious and sounded him out. Success - would be long odds on and even the media would think the move a positive one. Winners all round - Only trouble is , Vlad rarely does the obvious right thing. When he is suggested to, that something is sensible he usually dumps the idea as he himself has not thought of it.
Hopefully Gorgies Finest is correct.Just nobody hold any breath.

Vlad - Contact Davies , sign him , team improves , publicity improves , people re-buy season tickets(cause they are not going to right now)everyone wins.
Rocket science it is not.
37

The Gorgie Boys Are In Town,

Wins ease the pain of currently not having a proper manager but cerainly don't pacify us to any extent.
Exactly the reasons stated by Busby why Davies should be brought in now, get started on the job of rebuilding as quickly as possible with next few seasons in mind.

If i was to choose a manager i would want then it would be Antic, not British but a great manager well respected and would help attract players of a good calibre.
