Burley: I never told Scotland players they could drink after game

Published Date: 12 April 2009
SCOTLAND manager George Burley has denied it was his decision to sanction alcohol for the players on the night of the drinking debacle at Cameron House that has rocked Scottish football.
In the version of events until now accepted as fact, Burley had been blamed for allowing drink to be consumed when the squad returned to their Loch Lomond retreat at 4am after the 3-0 defeat by the Netherlands in Amsterdam a fortnight ago.

But it has emerged that team liaison officer Richard Simpson and sports scientist Brian Ewing gave the okay for the bar to be opened. Scotland captain Barry Ferguson and goalkeeper Allan McGregor took full advantage, indulging in a seven-hour session, before abusing coach Steven Pressley after he found them still drinking the following lunchtime. The two players were dropped to the bench for the Iceland game, from where they made the V-sign gestures that ended their international careers.

Burley, who requested a briefing with the Sunday press two days ago to "clear everything up", said that "two of my staff innocently agreed to let them (the players] have a drink".

"They put their trust in the players. I was unaware they had a drink, unaware they were at the bar. The bottom line is that you try to trust people and hope they act in a responsible manner but that wasn't the case," Burley added.

The SFA insists there was no break from the norm in the officials agreeing to the request for alcohol after a trip. Yet, questions will be asked of the two officials' part in granting of a request that backfired spectacularly. Simpson, a 'fixer' for the senior players, has been more than a decade with the governing body and has been embroiled in controversy before.

Last year, Simpson decided not to inform Burley immediately of Lee McCulloch's decision to retire from international football after it was imparted to him by the Rangers player in a phonecall. And in 2005, he was blamed for the administrative error that resulted in the banned Steven Whittaker playing for the under-21s in a match against Italy, which subsequently led to the SFA informing UEFA of his ineligibility and Italy being awarded a 3-0 win.

Burley this week presented himself as a wronged party following two weeks of relentless criticism. He said he had been "disappointed and hurt" by Ferguson's and McGregor's actions on the bench.

"That was especially so since the last words of my team talk were 'the whole nation's looking at you'. Everyone's looking at your commitment and behaviour, I said, so let's go out there and stick together. So I felt (what they did] was very disrespectful."

Sorry to intrude on this Ranger's FC site, but I am told you true blue Scots were singing songs about the Tartan Army today, something about sticking them somewhere where the sun don't shine, or so it was reported on BBC Radio Scotland.

Would this be because your infantile captain and Goalkeeper behave like 6 year olds who find out what the "v" sign means after an UNATHORISED BY THE MANAGER 8 hour bender.

How does it look to weans coming in for their lunch with their parents see the Scottish football CAPTAIN and Goalkeeper pi$hed out their skulls at midday?

Well I'm not a member of the Tartan Army so speaking for myself only, you can stick your players in the aforementioned orifice.

Just read Burley's statement in the Sunday Post which contains more quotes from Burley on the Board of the SFA's part in the debacle.
#11's message that they should all behave like adults is on the money - only if the SFA can't cut the mustard, what chance do we have?
And Burley shows real balls in his criticism of the SFA Board - what a bunch of clowns!

Burley, did without question (unless my source had a hearing problem at that moment) say the players could have a drink at the hotel.

Now, why is he is trying to push the blame on to two others, who had nothing to do with his decision and were only carrying out orders.

Burley gave the clearance when the team were still on the plane. Maybe the flight recorder can bring out the whole truth.

Gordon Smith has become the story.

Apart from the humiliation the Rangers former captain and Rangers` former keeper brought to both Rangers F.C. and Scotland,Gordon Smith also needs to pay the price for his unprofessional attitudes.

Gordon Smith will need to be sacked because he does not have the dignity to go himself.

Gordon Smith cannot hide nor dampen his biasedness.

When in his position as SFA CEO he was asked,in this unique situation,to provide honesty and clarity about the RangersBooze/InsultTwo.

Gordon Smith could give neither honesty nor clarity.

He is blinded by his biasedness.

Gordon Smith is not fit for purpose.

I`d sack Burley now. He`s a useless manager who got lucky at Hearts due to good players and an in form Rudi Skachel. There was countless rumours flying about his drinking escapades at Derby and goodness knows if they are true. To me if Scotland are to make it to S A they neeed a new coach now.Burley is tainted by this episode and must resign.

Gordon Smith is embarrassing the position as SFA CEO just as much as the RangerzBooze/InsultTwo.

His blatantly held biased position is untenable.

When he cannot provide fair and honest leadership in such an historic situation then what chance has Scotland got in everyday decision making .

The RangersBooze/InsultTwo will be talked about for decades to come as will the humiliation they brought to Rangers F.C.

Gordon Smiths clear biasedness in his role as SFA CEO has brought the same level of humiliation to his post.

Gordon Smith must go.

Instead of slagging each other now and again talk about football,

For someone to say if Rangers beat Hibs next weekend at Ibrox in next old firm game they will win title. That is lucicrous. There is still a lot to be played for. They both have still to play Hearts who have taken points from them both. The fact is the way things are these games can go anyway. the 2 - 2 Rangers Hearts draw could have gone a win for either side, the 1 -1 draw yesterday could have gone either way. We don't have the last 5 games yet but if Hearts have secured third before last 2 games. They may still have to play one of OF and may play a side full of youngsters. It isn't over until the fat lady sings.

Take the under 19s for example they were almost giving Hibs the title, but they lost 3 - 1 to Hearts yesterday and Rangers lost to Motherwell 2 - 0. So now HIbs are 5 points ahead of Rangers who have a game in hand and 7 ahead of Hearts who have two games in hand. Ok a victory for Hibs against Jambos next week may seal it but a Hearts victory would mean only 4 points difference with two games in hand, Rangers can N i p in and steal it. We can try and predict the ifs and the buts but it is a funny old game.

I am not allowed to use the word n i p.

Its a sad fact that you choose to try and blame the other lot to cover your shame, what have they got to do with it?
The pair of you are as bad as each other and only when you get rid of that attitude do we stand any chance of moving Scotland on from the shame which is the Old Firm.
I note you dont disagree with what did say about your club which is a start.
I also saw a few silly laddies with a union flag and Hearts strips on yesterday trying to wind up the Irish Theme Park clubs fans,I want it noted that Hearts and the police should be down hard on these people and fellow supporters should report it to them with the seat numbers of the clowns who think its funny. The one great thing is shutting up the vile O.F. chanting mobs with putting a spoke in there wheels.

Forget who was the better team over 90 minutes, the score was 2 -2. A last minute save by McGregor from Elliot stopped a last minute Hearts victory. You know your self you can dominate for 89 minutes and not score and have a last minute penalty against you. At the end of the day it is the score that counts and Hearts could have won 3 - 2, maybe not in your opinion deservedly, but the fact is in the second half Hearts were better team but even then Rangers could have got a third too.

Yes maybe so, but Ferguson did miss a sitter and the fact is it was a draw, no ifs and buts it was a draw, and there will be a few more twists and turns, as far as I am concerned the matter is closed.

I wonder what Setanta are planning after the split. Every game the old firm are involved in with the Hearts, Aberdeen and Dundee United will interest all five clubs. I know in the third place battle any of the three will be hoping for other two to get beat. Both Rangers and Celtic will both be hoping for a bit help from other three. It is going to be an interesting run in.

But that really is the same position azs Boydchenko...he wants to dictate who the manager is...really what we're satying here is that basket ba' and McSwallyshagger will render respect only if the manager meets with their approval.

That isn't good enough. That is unprofessional and unpatriotic. They simply have no class.

Of all our remaining fixtures, I take yesterday's trip to Tynecastle as the most difficult.
At home, hearts are a very good side, far better than the rangers as will be seen after the split when they get horsed by the jambos in the capital. Methinks the threadberz will get a bit of a roasting.

I don't think Celtic will drop any more points. Even though Hearts played some superb football yesterday, Boruc didn't make a save in the whole match, and in the last twenty minutes , we created three very good chances to score. In the final analysis, we should've taken one of those chances and taken all three points.
But I'm 100% confident that the rearrangerz will not be able to live with them at tynecastle and you can stick the kettle on for the threadberz gettin' a doin' that day.

Boruc may not have seemed that busy but Hearts had their chances although they did go over the bar and and past the post. In the whole game not a lot of chances were created by any of the sides. This is not due to forwards being uncreative but top class defending. Closing forwards down, plugging the holes getting into positions where opponents don't have a chance to shoot.

Burley has to get the support. If he though considers picking McGregor or Ferguson again then my respect for him will be at its lowest. I see it not about drinking but their attitude. If that is true about the conflict with Presley that along with the gestures deserves a ban. Those guys are in public eye, well known
and should set examples to youngsters and up and coming young players. Not examples of how many bottles of beer or cider they drink but examples of good behaviour on and off the field. If you are a personality then you have to expect the attention of the media and the public.

I've tried to read all the papers on the net, and as I said back around #20, the Sunday Post appeared to give a lot more of Burley's statement.
It was astonishing given he was biting the hand that feeds him.
#74 is right, though, they are all pointing the finger at each other, and the best thing now would be to shut the heck up.

#84 - I certainly hope Boruc doesn't make a save in the next Celtic Hearts game. BRUUUUUUUUNNNNOOOOOOO.

But agree with some of what you're saying. I thought when Naka got the softest of free kicks on the right that it was going to be a repeat of the New year game a few years back. Could prove to be a point gained for Celtic come the end of the season though.

Great game - Celtic Hearts games of the last few seasons (particularly at Tynie) have been crackers, yesterday was no exception.

And Gordon Smith.(if allowed to keep position)

Let Rearrangerz put BoozyBazza and McSwallyshagger back in their team.
By all means.

But the Scottish Public and I dont just mean footballing-public,want neither of these ignoramuses back anywhere near a Scotland squad.

Scotland Deserves Better.

A new definition of the soft fee kick will be on line soon.

Touch Nakamura on the shoulder (lightly), and WGS goes red in the face cause his team are getting torn apart by Elliot and co

Burley needs to bring in some new players.

While doing that, Dailly showed that he can play at right back

Ferguson and McGregor can NEVER play for Scotland again - It is that simple!
If the SFA allow the two players a way back then I will boycott Scotland until a new SFA chief is appointed. Not that it will bother the SFA, they dont care about the fans to begin with so it will mean nothing to them. But it will mean something to me! I will never support a Scotland that accepts people like Ferguson and McGregor. Likewise, I think you will find that Rangers fans who see Mcgregor or Ferguson wearing a Rangers jersey will probably boycott Ibrox until the pair are off loaded.
A precedent must be set and if one other player steps out of line they are out!

After finger printing, and a full body search to get this far, I can only say that the SFA has handled this matter well.

Rangers suddenly playing better without Ferguson.

Celtic gap closed despite a good away performance.

Looks like another close one and far more interesting than any Scotland campaign.

Don't you think the decision to ban them for life was too harsh in the first place?

#68 bto - "I think that they had a few too many bevvys. Manager approved."

"Manager approved"?

Burley "approved" of what, exactly? Are you saying he endoesed a six-hour bender? That he told the players this was OK?

If that's not what you're saying, then stop this childishness.

Who cares - 2 rank footballers are gone, so what! Now get the SFA board out while the iron is hot.

It doesn't matter in the slightest whether Burley, God or anyone else gave permission for the players to "have a drink".
As responsible adults (allegedly), not to mention professional atheletes, they must be well aware of the effects of alcohol on their fitness for purpose.
A lifetime ban is about right. A huge fine and a grovelling apology to the paying public wouldn't go amiss.

Bleeding Heart,

#111 - That's the whole point though.

What Burley said DOES matter if you're a Rangers apologist and you want to deflect attention away from the antics of two Rangers players.

Making out that it's all Burley's fault in these circumstances is mischevious nonsense.
