Scotland's son of the blues knows how to rock out, and this is his own little ditty about feeling a little bit down, a little bit sleepy, a little bit skint, but being all right once he's popped on his party shoes and joined his mates for a knees up in the kitchen. Hardly the lyrics of rock legend, but it works.

Track 3: FRIENDLY FIRES

'Paris'

Front man Ed MacFarlane sings: "This time next year will be forevermore/ And every night we'll watch the stars/ They'll be out for us" at the top of his voice, and it's hard to argue with one of this year's most talked about new indie bands. They are also fans of the glitterball effect – an essential party trick come New Year's Eve.

Track 4: GLASVEGAS

'Go Square Go'

Leave 'Daddy's Gone' until the end of the night. While we're still in party mood, 'Go Square Go' may be about the deathly gang culture of the Mean City, but it's driving guitar bounce has made it Scotland's lad-rock terrace anthem of the year.

Track 5: ATTIC LIGHTS

'Late Night Sunshine'

Glasgow bands can do more than misery, though, as the Teenage Fanclub wannabes Attic Lights prove. That familiar West Coast pop shines through most of their tracks, but few are as blissed out and optimistic as this little charmer.

Track 6: BROKEN RECORDS

'If The News Makes You Sad, Don't Watch It'

Scotland's Arcade Fire, but so much more in their own right, Edinburgh's seven-piece use their percussive powers here to reach anthemic heights. Perfect for a right old hoolie.

Track 7: PEATBOG FAERIES

'Folk Police'

Best live act of the year at the Scots Trad Music Awards, they write new tunes with traditional instruments and manage to squeeze dance, jazz, blues and funk into them. Audiences have been moved to punch the air and conga to this particular rave up.

Track 8: HOT CHIP

'Over And Over'

They are electro pop intellectuals, sure, but they also create some of the most 'shake your head with abandon' dance records going. Made In The Dark was one of 2008's best dance albums, but there's no getting away from their classic 'Over And Over' being addictively repetitive hedonistic dance floor magic.

Track 9: THE COMPLETE STONE ROSES

'I Am The Resurrection'

Rumours that the real thing may be reuniting for a 20th anniversary performance in 2009 are enough to justify this inclusion. From their self-titled album, 'I Am The Resurrection' is the Roses at their beatific, romantic and egotistical best. A nation of thirtysomething indie kids will testify to that.

Track 10: THE HOOSIERS

'Worried About Ray'

Big sounds and big melodies are this band's stock in trade, oh, and so are superhero costumes. Not quite the Flaming Lips, but a good attempt. 'Ray' builds to such a fantastical, high-pitched crescendo that by the time you've reached it you'll either be convinced you've got the X-Factor or be passed out on the sofa next to Auntie Irene.
