TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION
Traditionally considered the precursor to Edinburgh's Hogmanay festivities, the Torchlight Procession begins at Parliament Square on the Royal Mile and winds its way through some of the city's most picaresque hot spots. Last year attracted over 20,000 willing participants, so prepare for company.

29 Dec, Parliament Square to Calton Hill, 6-9pm, free for spectators, torches are £4 online; £5 on the evening.

NIGHT AFORE
This year's Afore shindig celebrates the Highlands and the impact the north has had on the world. An eclectic programme of music, dance and street theatre will be showcased over several stages. Highlights include a world-record breaking Strip the Willow and a lesson in American line-dancing.

30 Dec, George Street, 8pm-midnight, free and unticketed.

EDINBURGH'S HOGMANAY STREET PARTY
Not for nothing is this known as the biggest and best street party in the world. Three stages will carry the bulk of the evening entertainment: The Waverley Stage will feature Fife-based singer-songwriter King Creosote, The Scott Monument Stage will showcase Kissmet, pioneers of the British-Asian fusion scene, alongside them are Go-Lem System, a Barcelona-based latino reggae outfit and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. Rounding off the trio is Peter Hook, founder member of both Joy Division and New Order, who is set to present an exclusive DJ set.

CONCERT IN THE GARDENS
Scotland's own Idlewild will kick off in melodic style at 10pm before popular rockers Kasabian take to the stage at 11pm and bring in the bells. The incomparable Calvin Harris is set to round the evening off in style as he welcomes in 2008 with a much-anticipated DJ set.

31 Dec, Princes Street Gardens, 10pm-1am; tickets are £37.50-£42.50.

CEILIDH IN THE GARDENS
An open-air party for the dance-loving masses, this year welcomes the arrival of the Mound Square Stage and the Ceilidh dance-floor down in the Gardens. Salsa Celtica and The Occasionals are among the support acts getting the party started.

31 Dec, East Princes Street Gardens and Mound Square, 10pm-1am, tickets are £37.50.

THE HOOG AND HOOG ROYALE
An array of ceilidh tunes and a steady flow of food and drink provide the perfect line-up for those wishing to bring in the bells in indoors.
