Fletcher 40

Dundee United 2

Feeney 28; Goodwillie 89
THE feel-good factor that had enveloped Easter Road in the build-up to the visit of Dundee United evaporated after David Goodwillie struck a later winner for the visitors to leave Hibs with virtually no chance of securing a Europa League berth.

With four games left – two against the Old Firm – United can now assume they have staved off any threat from the Leith outfit for fourth place after opening up a 10-point advantage.

Over the course of the 90 minutes, it was a result they merited given their bravery in getting players forward, although they were aided by the sending off of stand-in captain Chris Hogg just minutes before Goodwillie scored.

"I didn't think a point was good for us if we are to catch Hearts," said Craig Levein, the Dundee United manager.

"The starting line-up is as adventurous as I dared to put it. If this was October and at 1-1, I would have taken a draw. If we hadn't picked up three points, I would have been disappointed. I thought we deserved to win."

United, now two points behind Hearts ahead of the Tynecastle side's trip to Rangers today, opened up a lead in the 28th minute through Warren Feeney following inept defending at a corner from the hosts, although Steven Fletcher ensured the sides were level at the break with a 40th minute strike.

It was a disappointing end to a good week for Hibs given the Under-19s' domestic success.

After the first team successfully negotiated their way into the upper echelon following the split a fortnight ago, the Hibs youngsters bolstered the trophy cabinet by winning the league title and then celebrating the double with the collection of the SFA Youth Cup on Wednesday with victory over Rangers at Hampden.

Following this defeat, Hibs manager Mixu Paatelainen now faces a severe shortage of defenders for Thursday's encounter at city rivals Hearts after Hogg was unjustly sent off by referee Stevie O'Reilly for a late challenge on Craig Conway in the 84th minute.

Hibs are already without captain Rob Jones and Sol Bamba, who both missed yesterday's loss, through suspension.

Paatelainen is planning to view TV footage of the incident before deciding whether to lodge an appeal at the SFA.

He said: "We were two men down at that point because David Van Zanten had to come off for treatment for a head knock.

"I didn't think, in my opinion, it was a red card. These decisions decide matches, they have to be correct ones. I didn't think it was a malicious tackle, he went for the ball. It was late and it was possibly a yellow card."

As well as the enforced changes due to suspensions, Paatelainen gave goalkepper Yves Ma-Kalambay his first start since January after Grzegroz Szamotulski was ruled out with a troublesome thigh problem. If Ma-Kalambay was hoping to provide his manager with a selection headache upon Szamotulski's return to fitness, he didn't do a good job of it.

The Belgian fuelled panic in his defence by refusing to come for two Danny Swanson's corners, that coming

after Denes Rosa hit Derek Riordan's pass wide from inside the box in what was the first sight of goal in the seventh minute. After surviving Swanson's first corner, Ma-Kalambay needed the aid of the bar and his team-mates to keep the score level from the second in the 12th minute.

Darren Dods powered a header off the woodwork from inside the six-yard box and Danny Grainger's follow-up on the rebound was cleared off the line by Lewis Stevenson.

Hibs didn't heed that warning and United broke the deadlock from another set piece in the 28th minute. The goal was down to United showing initiative coupled with Hibs' defensive frailties.

Danny Grainger was afforded time to control Swanson's back-post corner before lifting a teasing effort into the crowd of players.

Dods then flicked a header across to the back post for Feeney who volleyed the ball into the net from under the bar.

Sensing Hibs were on the ropes, United went searching for another.

The lively Swanson was again involved, this time exhibiting exceptional close ball control to ease past Van Zanten and Hogg but his lofted shot, after exchanging passes with Paul Caddis, cleared the bar.

The moans from the stands soon turned to cheers, however, when Fletcher levelled on 40 minutes.

Jonatan Johansson did the hard work by creating room for a cross and Fletcher showed his poacher's instincts to stroll in at the back post.

The game sprang to life during the final minutes that saw Hogg sent off.

And Goodwillie took full advantage of United's greater numbers, collecting Lukasz Zaluska's kick out before drilling a low shot into the net from 18 yards.

We were rubbish, Mixu is rubbish, and we all knew that before kick off.

Europe was never going to be possible whilst Mixu is still being backed by the board. Quite why they're still backing him only they can know, but it's a mystery to us supporters.

Quite why it takes him 4 minutes to put on a sub when we're down to 9 men, is yet another example of his total lack of ability to manage. As if we needed more evidence after a season and a half of his bumbling.

On the upside, DU got the points to close in on Hearts :-).

Well done to Celtic for a clinical demolition of the Dons at Pittodrie. It was looking bad after a lacklustre first half but the dynamic finishing of Scott McDonald saved the day. At this juncture, it's all about points and to hell with the performance. The gauntlet has been thrown down to Rangers for tonight and the pressure is well and truly on them now.

I fancy the Jambos to snatch a draw, especially after the result at Easter Road yesterday, which leaves Hearts chasing points to secure third place.

Are the Gers up to the fight? We'll soon find out.

Mixu's errors of judgement are too numerous to catalogue but surely his continued faith in Alan O'brien, who yesterday found a couple of new ways to define the word 'hopeless', is the ultimate proof of his lack of managerial talent.

With Hogg out for the Hearts game we have a decent chance of winning the game now.

He was missing as usual at DUs first goal. And then gets himself sent off with an unnecessary and stupid foul.

I believe he and Mixu will still be at Easter Road next season but I will not be renewing my ST and will be chosing the games I go to. Like many others

I feel that with Jones leaving at the end of the season we have missed an opportunity to try out what I believe would have been the best central defence pairing in the country with Jones and Bamba.

Never mind we will still have Hogg.

One things for sure. No other club will want him.

Tom English doesn't miss and hit the wall so far as Paul Byrne is concerned, complete with inverted commas for what is no doubt hearsay...unless off-course English was following him around with a note pad throughout his years at Celtic.

English has written a very poisonous article ...it smells strongly of an intention to wound. There's even a vague suggestion that English fancied his chances against Byrne in a fight after the two clashed on the 'phone several years ago.

English clearly doesn't like Byrne, and I wager that the feeling is mutual. Unfortunately for Byrne he can't get his views in to the public domain in quite the same way as English and for that reason, I think it's only fair that the scotsman should offer Byrne the space of an entire article to respond to Tom English.

English has IMHO abused his position to pursue something of a personal vendetta against Byrne which he has clearly held for several years. I am not holding a candle for Byrne...as Tom English knows full well, the tale of Byrne's demise is far from unique in football. His personal problems and addictions which in the end destroyed his career had a dreary familiarity amongst many of his peers.

So come on The Scotsman, if your going to let Tom English use up the column inches to satisfy his own taste for schadenfreude, at the very least, allow his victim the right to respond.

#7 Try and understand this. O'Brien has been played out of position for a while now. He is a left footed left winger who plays best on the left. When he's played on the right as part of Mixus' master plan he is less effective and probably justifies the criticism that comes his way from the tactically challenged element of the Hibs support.

Yesterday he came on on the right and was his usual self. He then switched to the left and immediately we carried a greater threat. Riordan up front through the middle helped as well.

Most of all we need a manager who understands the importance of a midfield and of playing players in their correct position and of selecting the best players for the job and of being alert enough not to handicap his own team by leaving them shorthanded on the pitch.

It's a tense day for rearrangerz fans. Perhaps yesterday, the spring sunshine gave a gentle yellow hue to the task that lay ahead some 24 hours hence, but 'cometh the hour cometh the man' as they say....it will not be lost on the threadbear fanz that Hibs aside, their team have been playing bottom 6 clubs for the last several weeks....and hibs are only top 6 by the kin of their teeth.

So it will be a step up in quality of opposition for les gerz aujourd'hui...a large step-up. By spl standards, Hearts have a number of excellent players who could challenge for positions at rangers ( less so at the champions). Dundee U narrowed the gap to just 2 points, so a defeat today for hearts would render the chances of third spot far less certain....Dundee U would be right back in the thick of it, breathing down the jambos' necks.

So expect hearts to be very well prepared and focussed for today's match. I expect that rangers will, at least in the early stages, find the difference in quality something of a shock to the system. On balance, I'd say rangers are marginally favourites to collect all three points, but hearts do have a realistic opportunity here to take something out of the match.

My heart says a draw, my head, a home win by the oddd goal.
But we do have to keep an eye on the ref. In their last home league match, rangers were 2v1 up against motherwell and were struggling when they were awarded what must surely go down as the most dubious penalty of the season when Mendes collapsed in a heap after coming into contact with a motherwell player's boot-laces.

TOTT. Jones/Bamba potentally the best? Absolutely.
Not surprised you would rather have Hogg in the Hibs team. Its like Hibs playing with a man short.

Unfortunately, Jones and bamba will be missing but we have Thicot and Murray who can do a decent job. Unless Mixu plays them both in goals as part of his latest masterplan.

Good post and yes it's pressure on for RFC.

I fancy 1-1 today. Hearts will be better than they were last time out at Ibrox when they went awol in the first half.

Hearts will feel Dundee Utd's breath on their neck and they'll know they have to produce. They won't capitulate, they'll be organised, steady and will be looking to grind out a draw.

Add to this RFC will be minus Buggera.

A warm day in May, under intense pressure to win, after almost 24 months of competing on all fronts - will I think be too much for RFC. They need to find that bit extra and it's just not there.

In the last 24 months RFC haven't lost in any cup tie except finals. That's a lot of games. And for a 39 year old centre half (and they may also be playing another old timer in Daily)it will be too much.

I expect Rangers to drop points in the run in.

1-1 today.

2-0 Celtic next week

The other games will be tough - can't see RFC winning at Tannadice, they might win v Aberdeen at Ibrox and at Easter Rd - but other than that I can see RFC shedding points left right and centre.

I wish I could believe that. Don't get me wrong, I think Hearts have the ability to take points today, but over the years, their performances at ibrox have been, for the most part, very poor.

In the first trip there this season, I thought hearts were dreadful...hardly got the ball out their own half and went down with jardly a murmur of protest. On their last visit, the first half was more typical of their form at ibrox, the second half, the great exception.

Neverthless, I recognise that Laszlo is beginning to look like an excellent coach, and he has good players at his disposal...for those reasons, I'm quietly optimitic that hearts can do something today. The players need to be playing with confidence, just as they were against us on our last trip to tynecastle, and Laszlo is yir man to get the best out of them. If he can do that, Rangers will find getting three points a very tough task, very tough indeed.

#10 is so far off the mark, you'd swear he was Alan O'brien.

Byrne put his head above the parapet, so exposing his stupidity is absoltely fair game. English's references to his previous experiences with him merely add weight and context to an absolutely fine article.

I have to put my hands up and say that I was one of those who dismissed velicka, but he has done very well for the rangers recently...today's was another vital goal.

I thought there was nothing between the two teams until the last 5 minutes of the first half. Hearts had been giving the ball away too easily for a spell, and eventually, rangers were able to make something out of that.

The game is still far from over, but hearts will need to hold onto the ball to better effect. They are getting up the park often enough though the finishing hasn't been great. Just a tad more quality in the final third and the jambos should be able to take a goal or two.

Must agree, Papac injured why not have Smith slot back into the left back position, he is getting back to full fitness, and before his injury was a very promising player. One injury and WS moves around 30% of his team.

At this stage of the season the 3 points are all that count. Give Hearts credit, what a difference having a decent manager in charge of their side, they have looked very organised this season.

The Gers have looked a far more effective team when Davis is in the middle of midfield rather than having him stuck out on the right.

Another clean sheet for the club, to maintain the best defensive record in the SPL.

No arguement, they said immediately after the incident.

Wee Doddzie then almost called a caller a numpty.

He caught his foot which then struck his own other foot causing him to go down.

The stream that I watched the rangers game wasn't great to begin with , but became virtually unwatchable in the second half....I didn't bother to watch the last 15 minutes.

That being so, it's difficult to evaluate how the rearrangerz played over the 90. The first half was very evenly balanced apart from the last 5 minutes and hearts buckled during the first bit of pressure they'd come under. Half time was only seconds away and perhaps they just got a bit lax.

But we got the rub yesterday with a goal just on the 45 after a poor first half, and I don't think it was any different today for rangers.
I watched the first 20 odd minutes of the second half and during that time it was all hearts with rangers playing for the counter attack. Neither side was particularly effective up in the final third...Hearts did get one or two decent chances but the final touch was lacking in quality. Similarly, rangers broke well, but once up at the other end, they fell a bit flat.

For the team with the second best defensive record at home, rangers did well to keep a clean sheet against the jambos, but I think that was more down to the quality of the finishing than the defending. They got plenty of balls into the box, but either there was noone on the spot or it was a shade too high or the header was poor. An attack force with a bit more quality would have stuck two or three past rangers today, and mabry even a bit more than that.

Still, you could say as much about our first half performance at pittodrie....perhaps the one positive we can take is that in the second half, we didn't give the dons a sniff at goal, whereas rangers continued to leak half chances up until I eventually despaired of the buffering.

Good thing for me as a tim is that we dont need to chase the game next week and to a degree RFC do and that doesnt suit WS typical gameplans and his collection of players.

I don't know how to call the ibrox clash. As another posterr has mentioned, rangers have to press the game, a tactic which doesn't suit walter at the best of times.

If you were to ask me who is the one rangers player who was in the squad at the start of the season that I would like to see out of this clash, it's a no brainer : Cousin, and thankfully, he's gone.
More than any other individual player since Walter returned, Cousin caused us problems. Big, strong aggressive, good in the air....three times the player that boyd is if you ask me.

Our line up is likely to be

boruc
hinkel caldwell loovens, naylor
naka hartley crosas mcgeady
jan mcdonald.

If mcmanus is fit, I think caldwell will start in the middle alongside hartley , but I think mcmanus has to accept that he isn't fit and should just rest for a while. He's probably out for the season IMHO...he had two weeks rest in la manga with light training and he can't manage 45 minutes at pittodrie...methinks he's 3-4 weeks out.

Amongst the subs for ibrox, I hope we'll see Maloney, Sami, O'dea, Mcourt and Robson

Being a derby, I cant see enough quality in either side to run over anybody. Both fairly average sides who benefit from have large squads, where a lot of the players ability is on par with one another within the team, there are a few exceptions.
