Fletcher 14
TWO sending offs, two seemingly net-bound strikes denied by the stantion, another off the bar, but only one goal. It was enough to give Hibernian the edge in this match, and the belief that third place is no longer beyond them.

The fact that the goal came from Steven Fletcher, who was sent off in the previous capital derby, made the victory all the more poignant for the home side.

In third and sixth place, the gap between the Edinburgh clubs has now been cut to nine points, but if Hibs can stave off Motherwell and Hamilton for the final top-six place they know that post-match head-to-heads such as this one could see a massive swing in the current standings.

The goal came in the 14th minute when Fletcher's attempted header struck his shoulder before looping over Hearts goalkeeper Janos Balogh, but the real excitement and talking points occurred in the few minutes leading up to the interval. That was when Colin Nish played a long pass over the top of the Hearts defence for his strike partner, Fletcher, to run onto. Hearts' Hungarian keeper opted to race off his line in the hope of beating Fletcher to the ball. It was a forlorn hope and the pair clashed around 25 yards from goal. With no Hearts defenders behind the ball it was a clear goal-scoring opportunity denied. Red card number one to Hearts.

One goal down and one player down, but at least one aspect of that was redressed a minute or two later. Deep into stoppage time, Michael Stewart threaded a pass into the left channel and Hibs defender Sol Bamba felled Christian Nade as he tried to get on the end of it and cut in towards goal.

"I don't think there is any question about the first (red card], said Mixu Paatelainen, who was enjoying the taste of an Edinburgh derby triumph for the first time as Hibs manager. "It was very clear cut and an easy decision for the referee, but I felt the second one was questionable. Sol Bamba was looking in the other direction and it was more of a collision. It wasn't over aggressive play and I didn't feel that they were denied a goal-scoring opportunity, but the referee saw it the other way and wanted to level it. Simple as that."

It was debatable, given that there was little likelihood of the big striker racing away from the right-back. Even if he had Grzegorz Szamotulski had already proved himself in a one-on-one situation with Nade, so it was certainly not as clear-cut an opportunity as the one denied at the other end. It was a blow to Hibs, who were already reaping the benefit of the early goal and the fact it forced Hearts to come out looking for a leveller rather than sitting in for a draw.

A one-man advantage would have been an even bigger asset, especially as Hearts had already lost one of their key attacking threats, Andy Driver, to a thigh injury in the 26th minute.

It made for a compelling contest, which raged from one end to the other at pace, but while Hearts failed to capitalise on their chances, it was Fletcher's finish which separated the sides.

The striker, who was watched by Scotland manager George Burley, and would seem to have returned to form just in time for the next squad announcement, added to the goal he scored against Hamilton last week.

Minutes after Derek Riordan had almost opened the scoring with a searing 30-yard drive which crashed back off the stantion, Fletcher then found the net. It was an Alen O'Brien cross in from the right and the 21-year-old inside the six-yard box in attempt to head towards goal. Instead, the ball appeared to hit him on the shoulder, lifting it over and beyond Balogh. The fact that it wasn't what he intended was neither here nor there to the striker, who seems to have regained his confidence.

But it wasn't a match Hibs had all to themselves. Hearts had tested with a Stewart shot just nicking the wrong side of the post in the opening minutes and in the 21st minute a bout of Bamba casualness allowed Nade to test the the Hibs goalkeeper from close range. Szamotulski got down well at his feet and managed to block the ball as the striker tried to round him.

Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo had not been happy with the defending when Hibs took the lead, but he admitted that the most telling difference between the sides was his own team's inability to convert possession and chances into goals, with Nade, the man whose goal separated the teams the last time they met, the biggest culprit.

"The difference between professional and amateur footballers is if they have one chance they must score. If you need five or six chances then that is very bad," said Laszlo.

Stewart almost made the breakthrough for the Tynecastle side, his free-kick following the Bamba sending off, coming back off the stantion.

As the match wore on it was the midfielder's set pieces which were the biggest cause for concern to Hibs and that threat was missed when he was replaced by Polish midfielder Adrian Mrowiec in the 76th minute.

Moments earlier Hibs had almost extended their lead, though. But Jamie MacDonald, who had come on for Bruno Aguiar to replace Balogh in goal, showed the Hungarian how he should have handled the first-half situation. A virtually identical ball was played over the top of Eggert Jonsson to Fletcher, leaving him to charge in on goal. This time, the goalkeeper stayed big and parried Fletcher's effort.

It gave Hearts a modicum of hope and they continued to press for an equaliser but were always vulnerable to a quick counter, especially when Jonsson was pushed up to bolster the attack as the clock ticked down.

Nade did have another chance in the 84th minute, but he could not get enough power or direction on his header and it bounced back off the bar.

It allowed Hibs to rack up their third clean sheet in succession. A perfect response to their manager's outburst after the recent Inverness match.

For Hearts, third place is still theirs to defend. But someone in their ranks will need to find a scoring streak if they are to make it easier. The question on this evidence, is who that could be.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Steven Fletcher is getting back to form with two goals in two games. There were a few contenders, but the fact he was the one player with the ability to convert a chance into a goal sets him apart.

QUICK FACT

Hearts have now picked up six red cards this season. Hibs have been shown two.

TALKING POINT

The sendings off. Always contentious, but in a derby when few fans can see any wrong in their teams, referee Charlie Richmond was never going to escape the wrath of the crowd, especially when he sent off Sol Bamba for a challenge which looked more worthy of a booking.

Two poor sides, but I think Hibs deserved the win, after all the Yams have had loads of luck over the past two years thanks to Maka and McNeil handing them undeserved results. And never a red for Bamba, I don't care what that Welsh turkey John Hartson says on Setanta. Charles Richmond has never given Hibs a thing, ever, so was no surprise he was itching to even it up. We still need to beat Aberdeen next week, that game is now massive with Motherwell winning again. Mixu has to make the top six or he should be sacked for the brand of football he's served up. Why he brought on that turkey Keenan today?! He did his best to give Hertz a chance.

The empty seats at both end's of the Stadium sends out a message... Hearts and Hibs fans have had enough of being short changed this season, there is nothing on show from either team, if Hearts make Europe they will not last 5 mins...Hibs will do well to stay in the Top Six.....No signings in the summer and the season tickets will slump even more.

It does not have to be 'clear cut' hen it was a goal scoring opportunity. The inability of the new fat striker to put it away is incidental. Bamba off End Off

The reporter is just trying to be flash with words, trying to find another name for the woodwork (which is probably some form of plastic these days anyway) but the stantion - correct spelling "stanchion" is the support to the frame of the goal - not the post or crossbar itself. So, as some have already said - amateurish reporting. Fast becoming the norm.

Oh, and well done the Hibs. Shame Motherwell won too but hey ho.

Objective commenting again, you probably don't belong here!! However, a few points.....

Driver did what Driver always seems to do when I've seen him. He puts a full back on toast (NB - Bamba not a RB), but his end product is questionable. Still young though.....

Riordan is, in effect, a luxury player. True, he can bring little to a game over 90 minutes BUT he scores goals, some spectacular. That is the difference bewteen top six and bottom six for us just now. Big Nish was excellent in the first half and I felt for him getting taken off but Riordan is a 'first pick' for the aforementioned reason.

And sadly we are still gash. Two one nil wins doesn't pull the wool over our eyes. Being so close to European Football demonstrates how mince the league is this season. If we'd had a midfield (or manager), this season I'd suggest that we'd be sitting pretty. Hey ho......

Finally, don't worry about the unwashed juvenile element of your support. Apparently they're still looking for the scarves they threw on the park yesterday. Idiots.

Imagine Mixu debating the Bamba sending off. What a tooting tanny. The game I saw involved Hearts creating by far the better chances. And Fletcher's "brown trout dive" when challenged by the goalie.....he was lucky Hearts didn't equalise as any striker worth a monkeys would have stayed up and scored. And as for Rearend...which one of you Hobos did he acknowledge as he left the pitch...surely there was no more than one applauding that performance...disinterested duzzny do it justice. Mixu must stay and hopefully this one-off freak result will buy him more time!!

IMO Deeks 'stanchion' shot turned the match. Up to that point Hibs were on the back foot.....and yes, we're still gash. All that's left to debate is the degree of gashness compared with Hearts. Even in our gashness, I believe that the majority of points we;ve won this season have been deserved. Couldn't say the same for the points Hearts have stolen.

There's a thing. Regardless of whether or not it was a red, I was actually glad Sol was sent off, it may even have won us the game. Driver was going past him at will and he was in 'bombscare' mode for the time he was on the pitch. Definitely not a defender

#29 Here's some more selective stat quoting: Your team needs to win another 70-odd times in a row just to draw level in derby wins. But you seem confident enough...

Balogh deserved to walk but how about that Brown Trout leap of Fletcher's? 10 out of 10 for style. Not to mention the waving of an imaginary card at the ref - no booking or condemnation in the press funnily enough, unlike with Zauliskis.

#50 It was an intentional, cynical professional foul that denied Nade a clear goalscoring opportunity (just as Baloch did with Fletcher). Nade would have been through on the goalie and if that's not a goalscoring chance I don't know what is. The rules don't say it has to be a guaranteed goal, just a clear opportunity. Suck it up. Bamba has the worst disciplinary record on the league - maybe Mixu should have a word.

Only one scene of blatant cheating yesterday. Neilson going down with a suspected head clash when he was beaten to the ball on the edge of Hearts box. Replays showed no contact was made. The Hearts trainer was over him like a rash similar to the all blacks protecting their line. Cheating is the same all over but not every player is a cheat. He is though and should be fined by the club for his actions. They may of course actively condone it.

Hearts lost the game yesterday because of the two centre backs inability to win a header let alone dominate their area.

Despite his shortfalls, Zaliukas should've started with Karapidis protecting in midfield in front of the two CB's.

This result has been coming for weeks because the Karapidis / Jonnson partnership have got away with it despite their inability to win headers in their own box. Yesterday we did not but we could see it coming.

Obvious - that "video" replay was used at both sending offs.
Shows it can be done.....UEFA told Gordon Smith NO to using the technology but we know it is happening in the "bigger" televised games (when instant decisions are not mandatory)
Richmond got both sendings off spot on......watch who he is NOT speaking to via his earpiece - Its not the fourth official as he was busy appeasing the "harshly done by" respective benches.
Can't see the downside.

Semi decent first half which Hibs edged once the dangerous looking Diver went off. Absolutely dire, eye bleedingly bad second half with zero football played.

I've now seen Hearts on several occasions this season and am yet to see why their fans are so delighted with how they are playing. With the excption of Driver and Aguiar (when he can be bothered) they are a predictable and dour outfit.

Having said all that the fact that we are still in with a chance of catching them after this torturous season under Mixup amazes me more, they should be out of sight.

IMO both teams were pretty poor, especially after going down to ten men. Hibs fans can be happy with 3 points but surely not with the performance. The truth is that they got lucky with the goal and a but unlucky with ratboys shot off the woodwork. Hearts were unlucky with hitting the woodwork and poor composure from Nade.

Driver was excellent before he had to go off, nobody to aim for in the box though which is hardly his fault.

IMO ref got both decisions correct (with a little help from a friend on the end of his radio), this should happen more often. Whilst talking about refs I see Ian Brines has been slated in the papers again. 2 marks out of 10 in the sunday mail, how does this muppet get away with it week after week ?

Edinburghs Big Team was spot on earlier by pointing out that Zali should have been playing as we've clearly been toiling with high balls sin Berra left and Zali got suspended. Let's hope Csaba's happy to have made a point but will now call on Zali for the next game.

I'm more disappointed in the performance than in losing 1-0 away from home. Hope to god things improve over the next few weeks or we can say goodbye to 3rd place.

My apologies to the fine posters of both Edinburgh teams for the interruption, but with no other obvious place to post, I'd just like to quickly take the opportunity to congratulate Celtic on deservedly winning the CIS Cup this afternoon.

A poor game between two distinctly average teams, but the better side undoubtedly prevailed on the day, and no excuses can be offered.

I've said it before (on at least three occasions this season actually) but Walter Smith really has reached the end of the line. When you can line up for a Cup Final with a carthorse like Lee McCulloch as a starter, and Christian Dailly (who eventually replaced him, much to my disgust) on the bench, while talented, attack-minded young players like Aaron and Fleck don't even make the sixteen, then for me you've given up before you've even started, and effectively admitted that your only interest is in strangling the game and hoping for a slice of luck.

Walter, you stand guilty of boring decent Rangers fans to death with your dogmatic and slavish emphasis on defence, on safety-first football, and on "experience". There has to be far more to football than this, especially when you've spent around £30 million on player purchases over the last two years.

Doubtlessly, you'll now be allowed to see the season out, but, once it ends, pack your bags, and take your little buddy McCoist, who is tainted by association, with you.

I don't often agree with "Idee" on anything, but I'll second one of his regular sentiments...

Rangers Deserve Better.

I think you know Rosa will be playing in the maroon & white next year. You can have Michael Stewart back though, if you want ?

well done celtic, it should have been 4-0. Rangers did not show enough to take this game. Will super ally now take over.

4 in a Row is in the cards, todays game was going to the hungrier team, well done CHAMPIONS.

Congratulations on the win. I enjoyed the extra time, was out most of the afternoon. Didn't miss much during the 90mins apparently. I do hope Ex-Con Jack wasn't too disappointed...Aye! Right!

I personally don't have a problem with the majority of OF posters and think your threads should be open (properly moderated).

.......None of which should be taken as an indication that I, in any way, LIKE you, natch!

Fair play to the Hobo`s on winning, some decent posts from many fans of Hearts and the Hobo`s on here today, however it would be a proper result if the pundit and all the other weegie c**ts on here f*cked off.

I know as a Celt I should be rejoicing tonight at winning the first trophy of the season and even indulging in a bit of gloating but after the dross served up today I find it hard to sit back and enjoy the craic of beating CFC biggest rivals.

Bearing in mind that both clubs on display today represent the best, the pinnacle of Scottish football then I feel rather depressed that I follow a league where the 2 best teams could be so lacking in the basic skills you would expect pro’s to possess.
Guys like Broadfoot, McCulloch, McManus and Caldwell are so shoite its tragic that young boys will be watching them thinking that this is the standard required to get a game either for CFC or RFC.

Do we all remember the young 16 and 17 year old nobodies who played for Arsenal against Wigan earlier this season?
Do you remember the type of football these young boys played?
Can i ask what are they being coached that our guys arent?

People keep telling us not to be too pessimistic about the quality of the Scottish game and we should acknowledge that we do have many skilful and creative players plying their trade within
the Scottish game- but I ask where the fe-ck are they?- as they were cleary not at Hampden today.

What else can I say except that their may be a vital benefit to CFC in the run in after todays events but my God the final today was further evidence of the declining standard of the game in Scotland.

SO much excitement about the diddy cup final. How the mighty with their pretensions if Euro glory have fallen.

So how come 'Barry' gets away with a touchline face off with wee what's-his-name? And showing dissent and bad mouthing the ref? Put a maroon jersey on him and that pratt Dougie McDoghnut would have had him red carded and hanging by his thumbs.

'Twas ever thus. Rangers to lose two in a row....and still no place for Webster or Velicka?

Boyne Bhoy,

Trophy went to the deserving XI although Rangers started both halves of normal time well then were pushed back.

Decent enough match between two ordinary teams with the right result eventually. Fair play BE and Invictager etc being men enough to appear, where are the others?

the only time the ref cant be inflenced is when he does an old firm clash, they do try their best to turn games ask clyde they had so many chances to bury celtic one year it was embarrassing.

if moira is correct then fletcher might have missed the target,if he used his head instead of his shoulder, casba will continue to play nade until his contract runs out the salary demands he plays even if he aint capable, least mixu can pick his squad on effort and merit.

Saw game on my computer. Nade was not on (to be extremely genteel). Knew when it went down to 10 players it would be an advantage to Hearts. Their system of play fed into it quite well, yet their effectiveness was the same in the final end(the box).
Hibs had direction and Hearts had possession without purpose. Without troubling opponents up front they are dead in the water. Score on Hearts and hold. If this is a season to just get into the top 6 then it is a success. Leave it alone and next step is an attack for next year. Yes I know, wishful thinking on my part.

#112, Pundit (all is fogiven), although I am not a fan of yours, when you decide to talk about FOOTBALL, rather than GRM you can make GOOD, valid points.

#119, Your comments regarding the level of football in Scotland should be observed by fans of all! I do agree with you and would like to see our young players brought in to the game and given a chance.

If all the Hearts players put in the same effort as Michael Stewart does every game we would be up there with the weegies.

Why so many comments rubbishing him from the JT support??I know he gets a bit carried away at times but he's passionate about HMFC and that can't be said for some.

"Around 25 yards out" ? It was more like 35 going on 40 yards from goal. Why didn't Richmond play advantage ? O'Brien was onto the ball and had a clear run in on an empty goal. He should have let O'Brien score then sent Balogh off !

Whats the script?,

Disappointing but not a disaster. Credit to Hibs who played OK but draw probably a fairer result. Our record v Hibs is still pretty impressive though and as my mate said on Saturday "It's good to let the wee ones enjoy themselves every now and then"
