Hearts 3 - 2 St Mirren: Glen's strike warms Hearts

THIS victory, hard-fought but just about merited, said a lot about where Hearts are at present.
Failure to claim a place in the top six was an embarrassment to the Edinburgh club and now all they can strive to do is finish as the best of the rest. It's a long way from the championships and European glory that absentee landlord Vladimir Romanov promised not so long ago.

Without the prospect of even a tilt at the InterToto Cup to look forward to, these are grim times for the Jambos, especially with Hibernian very much in the hunt for third place and the UEFA Cup slot which goes with it.

Of course, things are never so bad that they can't get worse. Gretna have already been acquainted with this painful truth and Hearts now also appear to be coming to terms with it.

Following Friday's AGM (at which, as expected, there were more questions than answers), weary Tynecastle footsoldiers would seem to have had enough.

With debts mounting, an unsustainable wage bill, a pie-in-the-sky stadium redevelopment and horrendous under-achievement on the pitch, it's hardly surprising that the Hearts support is finally beginning to fret about the motives and efficiency of the people who own their club.

Never mind Chris Robinson, Roman Romanov is quite possibly the most reviled chairman since Mao Tse Tung was in his pomp.

"I can't influence what Mr Romanov says," caretaker manager Stephen Frail said. "People have criticised the character of these players and talked about a lack of respect for the manager but they went out there today and did their jobs.

"There were a lot of people looking to see how they reacted but they proved themselves, even after going a goal down.

"We can only concentrate on the football side of things. These aren't the set of fixtures we wanted because we would have preferred to be in the top six but we're delighted with the win."

The atmosphere was muted, to say the least, and it didn't improve any when the home side were forced on to the back foot.

Andy Dorman forced a fine diving save from Steve Banks with a low drive from 20 yards but the goalkeeper was certainly culpable when Saints took the lead in the 19th minute.

Ryan McCay played a one-two with Garry Brady and advanced unchallenged before unleashing a dipping shot from 25 yards. Banks should have collected it but was slow to react and, although he got a hand to the ball, he failed to keep it out.

Fortunately for the minions currently allowed to sit in the directors' box, Hearts managed to scramble an equaliser within five minutes.

Eggert Jonsson's well-struck shot from the edge of the penalty area may or may not have troubled Mark Howard but the benign deflection it took off Will Haining left the keeper helpless.

Five minutes from half-time there was something genuinely positive to cheer when Gary Glen, making his debut, scored a quite superb goal.

He initiated the move with a pass to Jonsson, who supplied Saulius Mikoliunas on his left. The Lithuanian chipped the ball over the defence and Glen displayed composure when Howard parried his first drive to collect the rebound and slot it into the unguarded net.

Just 17, Glen revealed afterwards that he had rejected overtures from Manchester United to sign for Hearts, a decision which the Romanovs may struggle to comprehend.

The feelgood factor evaporated, however, and the atmosphere was soon as flat as it had been before Glen's intervention. A foul by Christos Karipidis on Billy Mehmet provided McCay with another crack at goal but this time the midfielder floated his free-kick over Banks' crossbar.

Hearts lost Christian Nade on the hour when the striker appeared to be concussed following a clash of heads with Haining. He was replaced by Juho Makela, whose arrival did little to lift the mood.

A fumble by Howard on the edge of the box presented the Finn with an opportunity to endear himself to the disbelievers but he didn't gain enough purchase on his shot and Haining was able to turn it behind for a corner.

Laryea Kingston, whose influence on proceedings was minimal, tested Howard with a powerful drive from distance, which the Englishman saved low to his left.

Dorman, who had been equally anonymous for the previous hour, also sprang into life and out of nowhere drilled in a 25-yarder which Banks saved with some difficulty.

For the most part, though, this was tepid fare, enlivened by two sensational strikes in the last quarter of an hour.

Gary Mason, another who had contributed little, sent a dipping volley over the despairing Banks and under his crossbar from almost 30 yards.

Mason didn't have too long to savour his achievement. Four minutes later he brought down Mikoliunas and Kingston curled the free-kick into Howard's top corner from a similar distance.

Saints haven't won away in the league in 2008 and Hearts held out comfortably enough for the final 10 minutes.

An entertaining game with some excellent goals from both teams the pick of them being Kingston's A1+***** free-kick , Glen looks a star in the making with a silky touch , will look forward to next weeks game now to see this kid again , 15K for an end of season match is 5K more than we would have got 4 years ago so things are begining to look up again for the Jambos

sounds like a good win, about time. I still would not pay a button to watch HMFC. Been a supporter for years but now will not accept the current circumstances. Our team are crap!! get over it..

A few crumbs of comfort while the big boys dine elsewhere. Can you imagine trying to concentrate on playing week after week with all the nonsense that surrounds HOMFC these days swirling about you? We are shooting ourselves in both feet with discouraging regularity. All of our problems are self inflicted. What a way to run a team!

#1 - Things are so bad that you say they are looking up, after beating the team 2nd bottom of the bottom 6 by 1 late goal, at home!!!!

You would probably be one of those in January that said all was OK because Vlad has promised a new manager.

I hope others aren't so easily swayed or Romanovs can continue to run us down unabated, knowing support are bit players in their Animal Farm method of ownership.

The first 30mins of this game were excruciatlingly bad for Hearts fans. During that time we look truly awful.
I had my mind made up to head home at half time.
Then, Glen scored and I changed my mind.
After the break, Hearts improved, and St Mirren were rarely in it.
I fully expected to see two right numpties coming in to replace Elliot and Neilson. I'm entitled to have thought that, because those two, who have been consistently poor, had to be the "best" players for those positions.
Well! Thomson looked much better than Robbie and should not drop out of the team, and Glen is certainly a far brighter prospect, and more cultured front player that Elliot...by a mile.
My verdict...Guys like Thomson and Glen, should have been introduced into the team months and months ago.
More evidence, if more was required, that Shaggy has not got a clue.

Jam Tarts 1874,

First of all Ewing Grahame's anti-Hearts "report" on this game is a disgrace.

Grahame goes on about "With debts mounting, an unsustainable wage bill, a pie-in-the-sky stadium redevelopment", maybe Grahame is normally out delivering papers on a Sunday morning around Leith rather than pretending to be a journalist.

This idiot also says "Just 17, Glen revealed afterwards that he had rejected overtures from Manchester United to sign for Hearts, a decision which the Romanovs may struggle to comprehend." What is it Grahame thinks he is acheiving with his snivelling little jibes?

On the game he says "He was replaced by Juho Makela, whose arrival did little to lift the mood." This is a complete lie, Makela was cheered onto the pitch and livened up the attack.

My own opinion on the game was that I was pleased to see us playing 2 strikers, however that was negatively balanced by Jonsson and Palazuelos together in the centre of midfield. Both have qualities, however neither is noted for their passing or creativity, we therefore produced little from midfield.

Nice goal from Kingston to seal the win, not one of his better games.

Thomson and Glen did really well and Mole looked useful for the short time he was on. I would suggest idiots like Ewing Grahame will be eating their words in the seasons to come.

Have to agree with #6 on the nature of this report.

A report on a Hearts v St.Mirren game and it is paragraph 12 before St.Mirren even get a mention - but never mind, 'Ewing Grahame' managed to mention the Hibs right up front.
It is telling that you have to read the comments of people that were at the game to get an accurate picture (ex-pat Jambos take note)
How low will Scotsman Publications circulation figures have go before they hire some decent sports journos?

#6 - Jam Tarts- don't be so precious. You're sounding like a paranoid whinging Tim. The article says it as it is. We're stuggling to be the best of the bottom 6, have debts up to our ears and have NO obvious solution.

Agree with the poster who said that 15K for such a meaningless game is respectable.

#10 - What on earth has a report about a low brow bottom division game between two poor sides got to do with, as you quote, "... paranoid whinging Tim"?

Are you one of the supposed minority at Tynecastle who are not bigots just misunderstood? Or, is it the truth that people like you are just intrinsically bigoted and cannot seperate the perennial underachieving of your team with a religious faith?

Sadly, bigotry is not really an issue for football but it certainly is for some of its followers.

#5 are you really thick as pigdust or what, to say that shaggy not having a clue, he can only select a team from the squad he has, the club isn't being run by him, but from a lithuanian imigrant that has no idea of how to run a football club, its clearly unfair to put the blame onto someone that has done his very best to have a squad of players that can do a job on the field
put yourself into shaggy's shoes, what would you be able to do? could you do a better job than him? if you want to place blame onto someone, ROMANOV IS THE ONE TO BLAME
I bet you will be one of these so called supporters that moan week in week out when things are not going well for the club, get off shaggys back and support the man for christ sake, he can only do is best

Agree with the comments above with regards the quality of this report. With the daily stories about Hearts problems we are all well aware of all the negatives around Tynecastle at the moment. It would nice if a match report could actually report the match. Pity any St. Mirren fans who actually hoped to read about their team's performance. Imagine they'll read the Herald instead. Wouldn't be surprised if a good few Hearts fans follow that lead. Certainly where I'm off to now.
17

livicelt,

Livingston 20/04/2008 10:45:15
#16 - NO NO NO not for the last time. Frankly, it is laughable and pathetic that you really think that Hearts are a club with no religious base. As i said last week, I accept that the Football Club are non denominational but never in a million years are its supporters! Just because you say it is does NOT make ith the case. Why are the Tynecastle games against Celtic regarded now as the most problematic for police cointrol in Scotland, even more so than Aberdeen v Rangers? Take the comment posted by #10. This exactly typical of a group of sad little people who follow HMFC. As for the posting of #17 it is exactly the type of response you would expect. Say the words and then deny it or accuse everyone else of misunderstanding.

Also, why is it not possible for someone like myself who supports Celtic to have a balanced opinion on any matter, including religious harmony? You do not even know my religious inclination yet because i support Celtic that disqualifies me from making an honestly held point? Only in football would you get this kind of purile nonsense.
18

livicelt,

Livingston 20/04/2008 10:59:12
#21 - If religion is of no concern to you why use the name Catholic Jambo? If religion is no issue at HMFC then why do you feel compelled to bring agtention to your own?
19

Mal,

Having now read the Herald report, I would advise anyone that actually wants to find out what happened in the game to head on over there. They also print a lot of stuff about what they see as the problems at Tynecastle, but they are sensible enough to keep it seperate to the main match report. I now feel like I know more about the game than after reading a teletext report.
20

dumfries jambo,

Just a note of guidance on how the attendances are calculated, lets say there are 15,000 season ticket holders of which only 4,000 turn up at the game and assuming they dont give their tickets to anyone else , on top of that 2,000 paying customers also come to the game , the official attendance would be recorded as 17,000 even although the 11,000 season ticket holders were not at the game, so lets not get into arguements over the attendances, in short every season ticket holder is recorded as being at the game ( even if they are not)

Sounds like like something from the mind of our new football messiah Mr Watson ( him of the Connan Doyle Hearts make believe supportres fed. )Truth is there`s nothing changed and nothing will till the likes of Romanov and his deranged son ,along with Mr.Watson (Romanov`s lacky )is sent fimly packing.

*22 It may be news to some in the West but 'catholic' does not only refer to religion:
catholic (adjective)
1. including or concerned with all people
2. useful or interesting to a wide range of people
3. interested in or sympathetic to a wide range of things

Have to agree that 15000 seemed a high attendance as there were large gaps in the home support, and wasn't boosted by the away fans who must have brought 2-300. What was it with that @n@l 'We own the capital' chant? Was happy that got stuffed down their throats when Larry's screamer hit the back of the net. Off to the Herald - what a pi$h report

Lets be honest this was a non event game. It would have been more interesting if two teams were to be relegated. It would be more interesting if we scrapped 12 team league and this mid season split and reverted to 16 to 18 clubs. I don't think any club from first division should play in Europe unless they are promoted same season and playing in premier league.

#22 - I don't know how you change your usename on this either, never mind. I want toclear something up. I do not accuse you of being bigoted. I suggest that there is a problem with bigotry at HMFC just as much as anywhere else. I fully appreciate that not all, indeed not the overwhelming majority, of hearts supporters are bigoted. I am satying that there is a proportion and that as such Hearts are no different from any other club, including the OF, who have far larger supports than Hearts and therefore if the percentage of rotten apples( notice i did not mention green grapes lol)is broadly the same then the actual numbers are significantly higher with rangers and celtic.

#25 - lets also get a few things straight. I do not now ,never have and never will, support the actions of the organisation you describe. Neither do the vast majority of normal, peacable Celtic supporters. frankly, it is insulting for you to even possibly assume different. You should also, however, take into account that in any conflict there are two sides. I have very often been in bars in edinburgh where there are "supporters" of HMFC sporting red hand of ulster memorabilia. Two wrongs do not make a right but i really think that it is disingenuous of you to comment on one side only of a 2 sided coin. As for you comments about hospital depts being much busier after the OF matches i agree that that is a utter disgrace. Tell me, though, how many of those guys actually ever attend a football match? Also, do you not relaise that in the Lothians, police resources and hospital depts are also overstretched on Edinburgh Derby days. Again, we are looking at a smaller physical number of incidents but roughly the same %. Violence is never excusable and football is the vehicle that some people use to justify it. They, like yourself , are plainly wrong.

The Gorgie Boys Are In Town,

Agree 100% with your post on 14 CJ.
Romanov Jr is a clown and the histerics from some people in what he said or didn't say more to the point has been well over the top. Vlad has to put someone else in that position or at least gag him completely as he seems to have with himself lately.

Nothing new in the AGM and i'm patient enough to wait for the new manager to be appointed at the end of the season. Frail in my opinion has done really well considering, and has made mistakes along the way but don't feel he deserves any critisism for that. Like John McGlynn before him he is gaining invaluable experience in difficult circumstances to be a manager in the future and possibly at Hearts but not for a few years yet.
Filled me with renewed optomism the performances of the youngsters yesterday and just shows they are there and have a great shout of playing for the Hearts. Would have preffered this to have happend sooner but better late than never.
A new Robbo in the making without the beef time will tell but Glen looks a real prospect.

#13 You really should take time to read things properly.
My point, and it's a reasonable one, is that Shaggy has picked Neilson & Elliot, both of whom are dire. And he's done this week in week out.
Due to suspension and injury those players did not figure on Saturday, and the guys that replaced them ... Thomson and Glen, performed better than Shaggy's dependables! And we won.
Frail is not going to take Hearts forward, that's my opinion, and if Romanov's lack of judgement on managerial appointments continues and Shaggy gets the job, I won't be turning up at Tynie.
This club needs to have some status restored, some ambition, and and a complete clear out of the coaching staff.
Step back from getting personal, and just deal with the points raised.

It's been a funny old season. QoS in the Cup Final. St Johnstone almost joining them (customary OF penalty keeping them out). Hibs being less embarrasing than usual. Hearts out of the Top 6. Scotland beating France home and away.

If it wasn't for the Romanov factor you could put all this down to the unpredictable nature of sport. What is predictable however is that Hearts are in a mess and we still face a wall of silence from the so called authorities at the club.

I sincerely hope that season ticket sales are at an all time low.
