Hearts 0 - 2 Kilmarnock - Lightning provides only spark

Published Date: 11 May 2008
FIRST-HALF thunder and lightning led to some humorous enquiries as to whether an "electric storm" might result in this game being abandoned.
In the closing moments, with Hearts 2-0 down and another bolt flashing across the Edinburgh sky, the question was asked once again by a home supporter – but not in jest this time.

Seconds later those left inside Tynecastle – and there weren't many – booed their team off the pitch as time ran out on their final home game of a dismal season. For the players it ensured there would be no cheerful end-of-term goodbyes, only an embarrassed trudge back to the dressing room.

If the thunder and lightning owed something to high air pressure then it was tempting to hypothesise, during a spectacularly mediocre first half, that the lack of another kind of pressure, with nothing at stake for either team, could be to blame. The only problem with that theory is that the circumstances were the same for Kilmarnock, and few would argue that Jim Jefferies' team were not fully deserving winners.

The first half was dreadful, the second marginally better.

Until the 74th minute, when Grant Murray rose at the near post to nod in a Jamie Hamill corner, the game seemed to be heading for a goalless draw. And eight minutes later the visitors applied the coup de grace, thanks to a well-worked goal started and finished by Paul Di Giacomo, who'd only been on a couple of minutes. Paul Dalglish, a danger on the right all afternoon, did well to find Di Giacomo again in the centre, with the substitute able to stroke the ball into the net.

Jefferies was pleased. "In the second half we were the better team all round. It gives us a wee lift at the end of the year." With evident satisfaction, the former Hearts manager added: "That's four times against Hearts (this season] without losing to them."

His counterpart at Hearts was left to rue a disappointing season's end, with only Gretna to come. "I'm not going to criticise my players," said Stevie Frail. "But it's disappointing the way the season is petering out. I put an onus on these games and wanted to go out on a high."

Whether he means "go out" in terms of this season, or his tenure as Hearts manager, Frail is as unsure as anyone. "I've never sought assurances from Mr Romanov," he said. "I've just tried to do my best, though we came way short today."

In fact, Hearts started the game reasonably brightly, with Fernando Screpis and Michael Stewart linking well to set up Deividas Cesnauskis after seven minutes, but

his shot from the edge of the box was blocked.

That, however, was about as good as it got. Eleven minutes later Eggert Jonsson was in the box and bearing down on goal when Simon Ford dived in with a challenge. But the defender's timing was impeccable and he swiped the ball from the feet of Jonsson just as the midfielder was thinking about which corner of the net to aim for.

A subdued atmosphere settled on the ground, until the first flash of lightning and distant rumbling of thunder. That provoked a little excitement. As Laryea Kingston galloped down the left and unleashed a shot from a tight angle, the resulting cheers were as much for the enormous clap of thunder that coincided with his shot as with the effort itself, which sailed over.

Kilmarnock did create one or two half-chances, mainly thanks to Dalglish's rampaging runs down the right. On at least three occasions he managed to fire in threatening crosses, though David Fernandez, Kilmarnock's lone striker, wasn't able to get on the end of them.

Another welcome distraction came at half time, when Stephane Adam added a dash of élan to proceedings, rekindling memories of the 1998 Scottish Cup final, when he scored the winner. The Frenchman prompted the loudest cheer of the day when, with man-bag hanging from shoulder, he strode on to the pitch. He is in Edinburgh for today's Robbie Neilson testimonial, in which a Jim Jefferies-managed team of former Hearts players will take on the current team. On yesterday's evidence, the oldies will walk it.

Oh how I laughed, Quote " we will finish with more points than Hibs" the Jambo's last crumb of comfort washed away in a thunderstorm, nothing left but soggy season ticket books littering the ground and soggy Jambo's littereing Gorgie. Can't wait to hear Victorian and Halitosis give their slant on this.
Long live King Vlad and his servant Shaggy.

Well that sums it up, Frail ' I just do my best', no doubt Mr Pea Brain, but your best is absolute rubbish. Go and start at the bottom; your nowhere near ready for this and judging by your mental agility, you never will be.

The ongoing demise of a once proud and respected part of Scottish football. Sad.

A disgraceful performance and Frail has to take a large measure of responsibility -he is totally inept and nowhere near the level required. If he is left in charge the only hope we have next season is that Hamilton will probably not have the resources to survive. Any manager who thinks the likes of Ivawhatshisname,Zaliukus, Elliot and Mole should be anyway near a Hearts team must be having a laugh. As for some of the other senior pros such as Stewart well the quicker we get shot of his kind the better as he is a waste of space, time and energy. There is a mammoth rebuidling exercise needed here from top to bottom.

The result and the performance came as no great shock to me, and I suspect most Hearts supporters.
Despite the statistics, we have performed poorly under Shaggys "leadership" in most games, and diabolically bad in a few of them.
If he picked that team yesterday, he needs to go and train as a plumber of decorator, because he will never make it as a manager.
In an after match interview Mark McGhee talked about building Motherwell for next season. He mentioned how qualifying for Europe would help him to attract better players to Fir Park.
Now lets look at the "sweetners" for somebody Hearts would like to bring in........
Well repected manager at the helm???????
Joining a team on the up?????
Playing in Europe?????
Being part of a fantastic squad?????
None of those "boxes" can be ticked I'm affraid to say.
Mr Romanov, we have sat through the very worst, you on the other hand, seem to be totally contemptious of the plight of the club, on the field.
Not much time left to sort it out my man.

My immediate concerns is the lack of any real venom or even incredulity being shown by anyone at Tynecastle. Frail is an nonentity and has his comments carry no weight with the HMFC support. Allied to this is that the Board either have no 'talking head' or they stifle comment for some reason. They certainly have not learned any lessons on how to deal with the fans or media.

What I want to hear is what is going to happen, who the next manager is going to be and what players (and there should be plenty) are coming and going.

I can accept that this season is over and has been for several months but the Board shouldn't treat the support with silent contempt. Use the media, feed out press leaks, use whatever means necessary to begin to get the support excited about next season, or tell thre truth about what WILL happen.

On another note yesterdays events at Ibrox will make the Romanov's more convinced regarding SFA, media and refereeing bias in Scotland. It is hard to view Scottish football as an even or fair contest after that. McCurry, Clark, Freeland and in particular Dougie McDonald should all be investigated independently with the SFA in the dock beside them. Would this be allowed to go unchecked elsewhere in the footballing world? I don't think so.

#12 The only thing that I can cling onto for next season is this...Campbell Ogilvy.
He has been entrusted to get us a NEW manager, and Campbell is the last vestage of credibility we have.
Because of that assignment being delegated to him, I am optimistic.
Should the promise be broken, I won't renew my season ticket.
I couldn't take another season like this one.
I'd rather get an allotment.
12

GrahamH,

Edinburgh 11/05/2008 09:00:17
#13. You may be right, Ogilvy may be last resort for some limited optimism.

The number of ever optimistic fans like #12 have dwindled (although vocal) and seem more than in denial, more deluded.

After 20 years of season ticket purchases, spending few thousand every year on Hearts related corporate entertainment etc, I can't see any evidence for optimism.

A new manager to carry the can is not all that's required. The minute Rix was unveiled we all knew deep down something was not right and at a significant level, that was 2 years ago and what positives since then?

The Maroon Seasider,

Dunbar 11/05/2008 09:13:54
#12 Scorchio....you obviously have a lot more faith than me (no pun intended, given you're login ;-)). Canpbell can say what he likes - and it will probably provide a fast track P45. Hearts have become a cash flow opportunity for Romanov. Nobody invests in a football club to make profit, unless it's a huge club like Man U with worldwide merchandise opps. Think about what 10,000 cash season ticket sales does for your balance sheet at the end of May - the debt is irrelevant.

#15 my faith in the Romanovs has all but ebbed away, and this hope I have in Ogilvy to deliver, is about all that's left.
I love my football on a Saturday.
I get together with family and friends and have done for more years than I like to admit to.However I am not immune from the frustrations and disappointments that have increased at the club since we sacked George Burley.
It has gotten to the stage that I would rather organise and take part in other activities of a weekend.
You know, at very little extra cost, I/we.. could fly over to Barcelona for a weekend trip.
Doing jaunts like that once a month are becoming ever more attractive.

Must be great bing a hibs fan . Hibs are in the top 6 and doing fantastic well. You deserve to be there.

So 3 games in to the split and you have two draws and a defeat.
Fantastic achievement.
Sorry to say but its going to be 2 defeats after today.
So Motherwell will be in Europe .
There is a chance you might win your last game against them but probably not.

But well done on making up the numbers

This shows that Frail need lot of education. What Romanov does he talk of? Vladimir or Roman?

He must start good lesson soon at Scottish Higher Institute of Technology.

Talked to Tam Flogel after the game ( outside the tynie arms) asked him what he thought of the match and the current Hearts team, he just laughed and shook his head!!! nuff said i suppose.
Good luck to whoever takes my seat in the Roseburn stand, no way i am renewing season ticket to watch utter dross led by the most inept manager ever.
Thunder and lightning was quite good, was almost willing it to hit Stewart, but no!! good things just dont seem to happen down Gorgie way.
26

CBJambo,

11/05/2008 13:18:23
Was at the match yesterday... absolutely dire. Frail is out of options, out of his depth and out of his mind to hang on any longer to this embarrassment of a team.

When Killie got the corner that led to the first goal you could just sense it coming... without Berra there was nobody challenging for the 'free' header that Murray got. Killie's second was all too easy ... in fact it could have been more that Killie won by.

Glen up front on his own was cruelly exposed for what he is... young, talented but ultimately nowhere near ready for the first team... supporters have lambasted Elliot and Mole for their shot shy nature and I feel that they have been under protected by Frail and co... Glen will end up the same way if asked to play up front on his own like that again.

I mean... last home game of the season... meaningless for many... and Frail plays one inexperienced youth player up front on his own... awful... the fans deserved better!
27

CBJambo,

11/05/2008 13:24:17
Would also like to give special mention to Gary Locke who was warming up at half time wearing a T' shirt mourning the passing of Jim Lumsden, a friend and true Jambo who sadly passed away earlier in the week.

A nice touch Gary... thank you.

Jam Tarts 1874,

Frail is a disgrace. We are at home in a meaningless match against a side that started the day 14 points behind us - Frail puts out a defensive 4-5-1, that is totally unacceptable. He moved players around for no good reason, Jonsson pushed out to the right, Kingston in the middle for instance - why? Ruben has been excellent this season, he has a poor game against Falkirk though and suddenly his place goes to Stewart. In yesterday's game I would be surprised if Stewart's passing accuracy was any more than 10% - boot him!

It took 65 minutes to get a 2nd striker on, just not good enough Frail. You set out to get a 0-0 draw, as you do in all the games you have managed.

We have some decent players and maybe a couple who could be regular match-winnners, but Frail has just made it impossible for these guys to play.

I will stick to my no manager, no season ticket renewal stance. I refuse to pay again for a repeat of Frail's dire football and total lack of intelligence.

What more can you say.I have been advocating a boycot all year and yet the fans churn out to watch this appology for footballers disgrace our hallowed pitch. Please guys get wise.Give this bunch a miss.Nothing`s going to happen under Romanov. He`s asset stripped the club ,will put the abject puppet Frail in charge and sign no one. It`s relegation next nless Hamilton can`t hack it .This lot are the League`s worst second to Gretna.I have never seen a worse team in maroon.Even going back to the relegated days there was better players.O`Connor,Malky Robertson,Cammy Fraser to name some. No, it`s time to wise up and vote with your feet.

Shocking performance. Pretty passing for a while without any urgency or cutting edge. No wonder other managers are touting Frail for the job on a permanent basis. 12 points from Hearts next season will keep their jobs safe.
Saddens me to say it.

WRONG - Vlad can net a twenty million clear profit by selling the land and players - IF the contract is signed by the council and company next door that allows the Tynie land to be "house friendly". CALA are hovering , just waiting.

Forgot to mention - To all those that think that Lee wallace can be our left back of the future - Hope you were there yesterday.
EVERY Killie attack came down his side.
EVERY Killie chance came from him being skinned.
BOTH goals came from his area/errors.

This was not just a one off bad left back display by him - Far from it.

Robbie's testimonial was more fun to watch than nearly every game over the last two seasons......
things that stood out....
Rudi is still lethal in front of goal.
Steve Fulton still looks better than what we regularly watch.
Screpis' goal - Has Vlad actually signed a good one ?
Two Joses on the pitch at the one time - baffling.
Who let Robbo loose on the pies as to empty the stalls by half time ?
Fans left at full time with smiles on their faces - A great novelty.

39 Catholic Jambo, I've often wondered how he has managed to spend 1 million on planning. On what exactly? I certainly can't think what would eat up that much money. Drawing up plans are something I am qualified in and what I saw by way of conceptuals would take very little time indeed.

"Total fantasy" ? - Get a pencil and paper out.

The total approximate land value that Vlad will own should be in the region of forty odd million (IF the company next door signs a specific document)Call it 45 as a split average (some say actually 50 million)
Sell the contracts of the player or just plainly sell them - Larry £1.5m,Driver £1m,Berra £1m and others totalling roughly £5 or £6 million. £10 million for the lot.
Thats 45+10=£55 million
Take off 24 million debt (36m less sales of Bednar , Velicka and Gordon yet to be "written in" to the books)and that leaves 31 million spare.
Take off 1 million for ground sale costs and miscellaneous redundancy payments and you have £30,000,000 profit for Vlad - Even with land prices falling - His potential profit for clearing off would HAVE to be a MINIMUM of the twenty million pounds I quoted. Actually the £30 million is far nearer the mark.
All this of course is hypothetical and hopefully will never happen.....But get your head out of the sand and pay attention to the figures.
THAT IS VLADS POTENTIAL PROFIT

Who is living in fantasy now ?
35

Heart Hater,

11/05/2008 19:50:12

Too easy to dump on Jambos these days, but it does beg the question.....did Riley have something when he told you that the squad wasn't good enough..and that was months ago. I don't think Jambos need like him, but doesn't the record show that, despite his aggravation, he wasn't wrong on that one at least.
Break it down and start again.
36

Cabbie,

Edinburgh 11/05/2008 20:02:32
well I have not renewed my season ticket. In my view, renewing your season ticket would be giving Vlad the mad your support and letting him know that you back him 100%
I wasn't going to renew last season but at the last minute I changed my mind.
I'll still go to games as I'm a Jambo but I don't support the way the club is run.
37

Bleeding Heart...,

11/05/2008 20:03:55
I think, regardless of any speculation about how much Romanov stands to profit from selling Tynecastle & surrounds, we must all recognise that this situation is of great concern.

If Romanov wanted to make a profit via the footballing side of the operation, he wouldn't have sacked Burley. He would have bankrolled Burley and ensured the team regularly won trophies and competed in Europe.

Even having sacked Burley "on a whim" (as George Foulkes stated) Romanov, if he was interested in making the football team a success, would have appointed another high-calibre manager - not someone like Rix.

So, if Romanov doesn't see success on the park and regular European football as a means of making a profit, just how DOES he plan to realise a return on his investment in HMFC?

This ongoing silence has to be challenged. This is not the USSR and we are not a bunch of down-trodden peasants whose loyalty should be taken for granted.

Nor should legitimate questions about Romanov's policies be treated with contempt and arrogantly dismissed by the likes of Junior.

Read #8 above. We need to develop a strategy to question/challenge Romanov's policies and a leadership to spearhead this.

Romanov has the land already bought - it is the legal type of land that is in question. Just now it is OK for retail. When the correct documents are signed it will be fit for housing. The price oviously greatly increases.
Like I said , even if the land is valued at £35m , that still equals my original quote of £20m profit.
