THE UK Government is diverting cash from medical services by charging hospitals VAT when they hire temporary doctors, an SNP back-bencher claimed yesterday.
Former GP Ian McKee, now a Lothians MSP, has accused Chancellor Alistair Darling of failing to support the NHS by failing to stop HM Revenue and Customs enforcing the charges. The only VAT-exempt temporary NHS employees are nurses. Hospitals have to pay the tax on all other health professionals they hire.

McKee has written to the Chancellor, demanding that exemptions previously used by health boards to recover the charges are reintroduced.

First they give the money for health care, and then they tax it back to fund the Treasury. It is like a bad episode of Yes, Minister.

All expenditures by government, whether parliamentary expenses, council expenses or departmental expenses, should be exempt from VAT.

To do otherwise is simply taxing on tax.
