ANGER was growing last night after it was revealed that disgraced HBOS boardroom executives walked away from their jobs with cash payouts worth thousands of pounds.
The revelation fuelled the growing row over the pay received by bankers who work for organisations that have been bailed out by the Government. Yesterday it was reported that the executives were given the money after the failing HBOS was rescued by a
Lloyds TSB takeover.

The HBOS payments were made at the discretion of the bank, which has received £11bn of bailout funds from the taxpayer.

The bank is understood to have allowed share-based performance schemes to pay out in cash rather than shares. In other circumstances, share schemes might be expected to transfer into the shares of the new company.

The directors are believed to have received 10% of the value of the shares at the time they were granted. Some shares were granted at £11, but had sunk to less than 70p by the time the rescue takeover went through.

Yesterday, Tavish Scott, the Lib Dem leader in Scotland, said: "People will be outraged that failed bankers got taxpayer-funded payoffs when we were assured by the Government that no such payoffs would happen."

John Park, Labour's spokesman on the economy and skills, said: "Nobody objects to branch staff who have worked hard all year being rewarded for their efforts, but a bonus should be a reward for exceptional performance and no senior executive should be rewarded for failure or simply for leaving the company."

The growing fury over large payouts for bankers whose institutions have been bailed out by taxpayers has led to speculation that the Government may be forced to take action.

Yesterday it was reported that Peter Cummings, the executive who was head of corporate banking at HBOS, had held the bank to his contractual terms. He was entitled to one year's salary. In 2007 he earned £600,000 before the £1.6m he took in bonuses.

HBOS declined to comment.

"HBOS declined to comment."

It really is getting about time to riot. These scumbags (the politicians) are in bed with the banks and ignoring us while bleeding us dry.

The only tried and tested methods to adjust these attitudes is to corner them and kick and punch them until they poo in their pants.

Once again the action of a few tarnishes the many. If this was anyone else and they screwed up they would be very lucky to keep their job. Why is it in this country that above a certain level bank managers and consultants get rewarded for failure. I work in this industry and at the moment clinging on to my job as the company restructures. If I do get made redundant I will be lucky if I get a month's salary in lieu. As for blaming the junior staff #2, they were just doing what they were told its called following orders, I guess you must be your own boss or not working. Most people find that if they dont do what their boss says then they are disciplined or sacked.

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer and it galls me that poor performers always get these obscene payouts for doing p*ss-all and "leading" their companies to ruin and bankruptcy.

#2 "Cumming was the only qualified Banker on the HBOS board." I assume you are using rhyming slang. Don't forget Peter Burt was a "qualified Banker" and just look what he did to Bank of Scotland!

What these people did out of sheer greed and self-interest compounded by total recklessness amounts to financial terrorism on a grand scale. They should be brought to trial, have their ill-gotten gains over the past few years confiscated and spend the rest of their lives behind bars. Any less is an insult to everyone in the country who has mmore than a grain of honesty, integrity or morality.
