Tolls end on Forth Road Bridge

THE Forth Road Bridge is preparing to go toll-free from tomorrow, when booths will be removed ahead of demolition.
The abolition of the £1 cost of crossing the Forth has delighted motorists, particularly commuters who travel to Edinburgh to work.

However, regional transport body Sestran has warned it will lead to added congestion.

The bill scrapping the charges received royal assent last week and Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson has said tolls will now be scrapped from 12.01am.

Three of the tollbooths are in the process of being removed to allow a free flow of traffic. The rest of the booths will be taken away later and a new system of signs installed.

Surely the booths would be best left in place on "Free Vend" as they are a natural traffic calming measure, and checkpoint for police seeking stolen cars , people , etc
Signs channeling traffic could remain with either some or all booths open (unmanned)
Alternatively start selling coffee , burgers, and such like in what would be the biggest drive through in the world

Like that idea of the drive-thru!

I think that congestion is actually going to increase (during peak times)with the removal of the tolls and the booths.

Traffic on the sliproad from the roundabout is going to be held up trying to join the main traffic flow to the bridge.

It's going to turn into an accident blackspot I reckon..

Once the road works are finished I'm going down with a video camera in the rush hour to record some youtube footage of 5 lanes of traffic (6 once the bus lane is built) merging into 2. It's going to be such fun !

Who,in their right mind,on approaching the new traffic lights,at 5-6 pm,is gonnae slow-down,or even attempt to stop,when there's hundreds of tons of metal,thundering behind you,Northbound,its going to be a Catch-me-if you-Can area!.

#5 The 'Menace'. Shouldn't be a problem if drivers obey the speed limit, read the signs and obey the traffic signals. If not, the Police will have a field day. Then people will have a lot more than a £1 toll to worry about.
