Romanov pins faith on controversial Chilean he values at £8m

VLADIMIR ROMANOV'S belief in Mauricio Pinilla has been emphasised by a release clause inserted in the Chilean's new contract at Hearts, set at a staggering £8m.
Pinilla, whose two years in Edinburgh have been notable for controversy and injury rather than eye-catching form on the field, has agreed terms to stay at Hearts on a deal worth a basic £12,000 a week. Over the potential four years of its duration, t
herefore, the contract could cost the Tynecastle outfit £2.5m, on top of the £600,000 in salary payments they have already bestowed on a player who has made only eight appearances in maroon, scoring twice. Further payments will be made to the player, formerly owned jointly with Internazionale, on a performance-related basis.

Romanov, however, believes the investment is worthwhile. Terms of Pinilla's deal include a value at which Hearts would release him to another club; that value, US$16m, would on face value appear unjustifiably high. Moreover, the Hearts owner's son Roman has invited Pinilla to his native Lithuania next month for a holiday. "For me this season is over," said Pinilla, who is currently recovering from his latest injury, knee ligament damage. "The doctors don't want to endanger my recovery and I'll return to playing next season in the SPL. Despite this, (Roman] Romanov (the Hearts chairman] has been very loyal to me and has even invited me and my family to stay with him in his house a month before pre-season commences."

Vladimir Romanov's decision to retain Pinilla, a player who played a total of 51 times in five years before moving to Scotland, is all the more controversial because of comments made by Roman at the club's recent annual general meeting. There, Romanov jnr specifically said Hearts would seek to remove at least five high-earners from the payroll as they had not offered value for money.

The Hearts owner's plan, almost certainly, is that Pinilla can enjoy a trouble-free season 2008-9, after which time Romanov can recoup at least a percentage of his money. Given recent history, it is a risky strategy.

Romanov has already validated a £35,000 bill for Pinilla to receive clinical treatment, believed to be for depression. With that in mind, the player who had an offer from Everton de Viña del Mar in his homeland and two from Italy – including Lazio – insists he owes a debt to Romanov.

"I'm very happy with the leadership of the club (Hearts]," claimed Pinilla, "All I want is to play again to reward all the affection they have given me. I know that, with this contract, much of my own and my family's future is assured."

Whether or not the mercurial striker has any genuine aspirations of repaying Hearts' faith is considerably less clear.

It is a risk of gargantuon proportions, and one, in my opinion, that Vlad will not collect on.
If Mr Romanov can point to a player of this ilk and history, who's then been sold on for £8m, I would be astonished.
I just hope he doesn't put the same "faith" in some of the dross at Tynie right now.

#6.

PINILLA - Even if Pinillas 51 games played in 5 years were full games, he averaged 15 hours of football A YEAR for the 5 years before joining us.

BESLIJA - I was invited to dinner at Living Room with some corporate people on night Beslija was announced, he looked miserable then and has only played a handful of games since. Signed February 06 and last played June last year. He has started 7 times in competitive games in 2 years!!! Worse average than Pinillas above.

Something not right. Your optimism is now not commendable, just outright mad.

This is only part of big business plan from Roman at AGM. Remember? Pinella will be player sold for £9m. It is easy!

But remember. At AGM Roman say to reduce debt they sell player for £9m. But last year he say there is no debt as money is owed to ourselves! But stupids do nothing about lies!

I laugh much at this!

This isn't a risky strategy at all, from Vlad's point of view - and the clues are in the story.

If Panilla's a flop, Hearts pick up the bill. If he's a hit and gets bought by another club, Romanov pockets the money. It's a no lose situation. Meanwhile, little Rodney gets a playboy mate to go on holiday with. Happy, happy days for the Romanov clan.

Don't worry though Jambos, I'm sure Billy Davies / Mark McGhee is working "behind the scenes" and approved this new deal!

Hearts representative on the radio yesterday 2pm.
"Pinilla does NOT have a new contract - everything printed about him re-signing for Hearts is total rubbish".
Don't tell me this paper might just be "talking" krap.

I've no longer ANY time for Vlad but I still say he is the only person with guts enough to tell Scotland that the old firm have the refs in their pockets. Yesterday at Ibrox YET AGAIN was testament to that. Craig Levein comes out and lambasts McCurry - yet where was he and all the others when Vlad was pilloried for telling the truth .They hid behind their stones and let the strange Lithuanian take the brunt. These other "victims" only come out and tell their truth when they are cheated on. If done at the same time maybe others would take notice but NAH - Vlad is just mad - isn't he ????????????????????????????????
In footballing terms we are - at times - a pathetic little country.
VLAD WAS RIGHT - MOST REFS ARE CHEATS - WE ALL KNOW IT.
Maybe Dundee United fans might just give a fleeting thought - "Oh - Romanov was not talking krap"

yet more dodgy decisions by Vlad, you really couldn't make it up.
12k a week for a player who's hardly kicked a ball in years, doesn't make sense to me

Until the club confirms all this, it ain't necessarily true. The obvious source for all this is the agent and they're hardly the most reliable sources. It was the bit about being invited to holiday with the Romanovs that caused me to disbelieve this whole thing. I don't believe 12 grand a week and the 8m buy-out or whatever is irrelevant anyhow. If we do sign him it'll be in the hope we get less than half that.

Heart Hater,

Vlad can waste his money any way he wants to, but the guys who are being foooled are those who, in spite of all the symptoms, have coughed up another £400-ish for what looks like more of the same drivel from any of the same no-hopers. That's the real worry.

The story has changed from £12k in performance-related pay to £12k basic which is a vast change and detracts from the stories credibility....not worth debating until a credible article is written about it
