Pressure still on Strachan

AN INEBRIATED Celtic supporter in the De Kuip main stand provided an unwelcome distraction from his club's encounter with Tottenham Hotspur on Friday. Choosing to spectate by turning his back to the pitch, for the early part of the action he gleefull
y gestured he was ready to take on all-comers, and did indeed repel any challengers. Until a steward reined him in. Still, he ended the evening with feet up and illicitly puffing on a cigarette, untroubled by the deficiencies of his team exposed in a 2-0 defeat. Under Gordon Strachan, whole seasons have undulated in such fashion for the club's followers. And there is no reason to suspect the forthcoming campaign will be any different.

It is becoming a summer tradition for Celtic fans to bask in title success and convince themselves a couple of real marquee signings are about to make Strachan's team, rather than their successes, something to get giddy over.

Such an assessment is the kind to have Strachan feeling more put-upon than Gordon Brown. As he does regularly, because he believes judges of his efforts with the three-in-a-row Scottish Premierleague winners can appear about as gracious as he proved in failing to show for Thursday's press conference to preview the Jubileum Tournament, which today will see his men play hosts Feyenoord.

In the club's magazine the Celtic View this week, he defended his sparing media presence close season by saying the stress of answering questions left him needing a break from it. Working for the BBC during Euro 2008 must have helped. In the same interview, he also stated that the football Celtic produced last season was better than the previous term, and that they improved on last season in terms of goalscoring while no team bettered their record on goals conceded.

While all true and legitimate, Celtic remain a curious animal. Even if Strachan is a man of mettle and a coach of substance, has bought some good players, achieved the club's best title run in three decades and enjoyed back-to-back last-16 Champions League involvement that borders on the miraculous, there is still something missing. And the fact remains that, but for Rangers run to the UEFA Cup final, the SPL trophy would likely be missing from its semi-permanent residence in a cabinet at Celtic Park.

Truly zestful and imaginative displays from Strachan's Celtic sides are real rarities. The second half produced at home to Spartak Moscow last August and a 5-0 demolition of Hearts the following month stood apart in this respect. Strachan would point to the standard of player he must recruit from an increasingly over-priced market for that, but inferior Celtic teams have possessed a great joie de vivre. Perhaps his at times almost misanthropic demeanour precludes him from instilling such an approach in his charges. Yet that is not to say he cannot be the man to ratchet Celtic's performance levels up a notch.

Rangers will struggle to attain the consistency levels they achieved last season. Meanwhile, Celtic have sufficient craft in the form of Aiden McGeady and Shunsuke Nakamura, and enough goals in Scott McDonald and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to suggest a fourth title could be snared in less fraught fashion than the third. Replicating their feats in the Champions League could prove an almighty struggle, however.

Defence could hold the key to the latter. The pursuit of Gabriel Tamas indicates that Strachan recognises the limitations of the Stephen McManus and Gary Caldwell central defensive pairing. And, though there is currently disquiet among the Celtic legions that the club's summer transfer spend amounts to the £1.2m Georgios Samaras deal and the £150,000 paid for Paddy McCourt that will be quelled, most likely, with the arrival of Tamas and a left-back.

Strachan could then begin the season with a back-four all changed except for his captain McManus from the one with which he set out with last season. How Andreas Hinkel fares in that will be intriguing. In forking out £1.9m for the German internationalist in January, the acquisition from Seville represented the first defender the Celtic manager had invested heavily in since arriving at the club in the summer of 2005.

The 26-year-old admits arriving mid-season has him looking upon this summer as a fresh start. "I found it difficult to settle at first because there were so many things to adapt to: the new team, the new club, the philosophy of their football," he says. "I could have gone to Borussia Dortmund, but I am convinced that I made the right decision."

Hinkel, refreshingly for a Celtic employee, doesn't side-step the issue of Rangers' European demands when assessing the factors that allowed him to claim a Scottish league championship medal on the final day of the season.

"Of course it had an influence on the way the games went," he says. "I have to thank my old club Stuttgart because they had a chance to finish third in Rangers' Champion League group, which meant they would have gone into the Uefa Cup and not Rangers. All the games to the final were good for us."

The games that were good for Hinkel in Celtic colours were the three he played against Rangers. Although his form may have been patchy overall, in impressing in the most exacting environment he demonstrated the calibre expected of player with 17 full caps, who signed for Seville from Stuttgart for ¤4m (£3.15m) in 2006. He takes pride in his achievements with the Andulucia club, despite finding himself behind Daniel Alaves for the right-back berth. It cost him his place in the international set-up and, despite harbouring ambitions of a return, has not been called up under Joachim Low, his reserve coach when he was breaking through at Stuttgart.

"Seville was difficult because I wasn't playing but I have to say it was one of the best times of my life, a special time," he says. "They signed me because they thought Alves would go to Chelsea or Liverpool, then he didn't move.

"The atmosphere was good – a great family and I learned a lot of things from the team-mates and my coach (Juande Ramos]. We had a very strong team. We beat Arsenal in the group stages of the Champions League, which wasn't down to luck, we won the Uefa Cup twice, the Spanish Cup, and the Super Cup. We finished third in La Liga but we could have won the championship one year. If we had won our last two games we would have done. It was incredible but every player played a good role for the squad.

Celtic provides Hinkel with different challenges. The intensity and pressure brought to bear surpasses that in his previous postings. "At Seville, everyone wanted you to win but here you have to do it. It is the same situation you get with Barcelona, or the teams in England and Germany that are always at the top. When you don't win, it's a problem. In Stuttgart it was different. The people there were always looking to lower expectations. It was a case of 'maybe we can go for the championship but a Uefa Cup place is okay'. It is the players' job here to deal with the intensity. If you win three in a row, you have to win four, five, maybe six. You have to be strong in the head. It is not easy but the players here are used to it, have a strong mentality, and are always challenging themselves.

"It is not just the fans who are never satisfied, it's everybody – the players, the people who run the club. But it is harder to hold a level than reach a level, because when you are at the top everyone wants to push you off."

And even when you are at the top, people want you to push on.

The Thread Bears get humiliated at home so there are no comments allowed on the story. Just as we couldn't comment after their thoroughly deserved draw against those giants of European football, Kaunas, on Thursday morning.

But the comments thread is open on a negative Celtic story to allow an uneducated troll like #4 to stick his mucus-caked snout in.

Anyway, I've just watched Liverpool's training session on Liverpool TV. Robbie Keane's every touch was booed. Must be the way he plays the game. lol! Then
Pepe Reina was booed for blessing himself as he came on – I wonder if it will make Page One of the Scotsman on Monday? Could have caused a riot, you know.

Over the course of the last few weeks it seems that when an OF thread is open it is a Gers thread.

This is the first tic thread I have seen in a while.

As for the Gers getting humped,, yes we did in the 2nd half, we were not in the same league as Liverpool and from all reports much the same as Celtic vs. Spurs.

In a one off 90mins either one of the OF sides with a full line up and each player in top form we might win one in six matches, and get a result against top flight clubs like Liverpool, who in the last few years have been miles ahead of Spurs.

As big as we think our respective clubs are, and supporter wise and game attendance wise we are, but compared to the financial clout of the EPL clubs we are minnows.

As the reporter said on Rangers world during the match, Liverpool spend 3.5mil for a reserve keeper, and Rangers are looking for a star midfield player for less than the cost of a back up keeper.
18

bring them on,

03/08/2008 08:35:26
Let's get real.

Liverpool vs Rangers, in the old days we had a chance, but we are not half the team they are. The result speaks for itself.

I foolow Liverpool, and have been a fan since I was a boy. I thank them for the game, and the lesson they gave us is good football.

Still, I will be shouting for Rangers.

Nothing to do with religion, or anything else some of the posters might want to whinge on aboot.

I just enjoy supporting the team. Win or lose.

Come on the Gers (and please don't lose to Celtic, cause they're mince)

#22,

The explanation is there in my post. Miller's association with Celtic is recent and high-profile (chest-thumping, scoring against Rangers, etc). The situation when he moved to Celtic was different. He had been away from Rangers for quite a while and his firsr stint there had been lower-profile.

Poor old Kenny Miller.

Ridiculed by Celtic fans.

Ends up being 5th Choice at Champions Celtic.

So after a disappointing time down south joins up with Losers Rangers FC - because he likes the management - a management that want him to play up front alone to run his guts out for a 0-0 draw.

Despite his efforts he is still jeered by Losers Rangers Fans because he thumped his chest and kissed the sacred shamrock badge of the Champions Celtic FC.

Yet still the guy gives 100% and is determined as ever to play for the jersey whoever the paymasters are.

You have to admire a trier but this time I think his sweat and blood will soon become tears for souvenirs because of tiny minded Losers fans.

I predict he will be at Ipox no more than 18months and his endeavours will be back down in England's second reach where they will be more appreciated.

Pity he can't score regularly otherwise he would be popular sowmehere.

Pressure's on Gordon Strachan.

Well the pressure is always on Celtic managers because we Celtic fans accept nothing less than entertaining football and silverware.

However, if we have an honest genuine hardworking manager who is taking us in a progressive direction then we tend to put up with a lot.

I'd estimate 95% of the Celtic fans are behind The Golden One WGS. The other 5% are indeed sad frustrated souls living in the past.

We are the Celtic.

We are the Champions.

We have the best team in the land.

We have the best manager in the land.

We play the best football in the land.

If some Celtic fans don't like these facts, then disappear and support Shamrock Rovers.

God Bless Gordon Strachan.

Andrew "H" Smith must be paid handsomely for some of the p!sh he writes about Celtic. Is it true he is the son of ex-Champions Celtic chairman Jack McGinn?

I couldn't care less how many pre-season friendlies Champions Celtic lose. Just as the success of a youth system should be judged not on how any trophies the various teams win, but on how many first-team regulars they eventually produce, so a successful pre-season should be judged on how many trophies are won when the real season starts.

Since WGS (of whom there is only one) joined Champions Celtic, I cannot think of ANY pre-season matches where Champions Celtic looked any better than mediocre. But at the end of EVERY season since WGS (of whom there is only one) has joined Champions Celtic, the SPL trophy has come home to rest in Paradise.

Three very successful pre-seasons I'd say. The success of this pre-season can be assessed next May.

Of course, Rearrangers are no longer in pre-season, due to their crashing and burning in the last seven weeks of last season. So their embarrassing loss to Liverpool cannot be discounted so easily.
36

James,,

It looks like Tuesday could be a big day at the home of the SPL Champions. It has been reported that Gabriel Tamas has agreed terms and if he passes a medical on Monday will be unveiled along with Marc Crosas the following day.

Over the 90minutes yesterday the Gers were outclassed by one of the top teams in Europe, no arguments on that.

The two starting strikers for Pool cost 46mil, I think that sums up the difference in the 2 clubs.

The first half was fairly enjoyable with the Gers at times playing decent football.

Had Novo put away the chance on the stroke of half time we would have been a lot happier.

The 2nd half brought to light the gulf in class when both sides made a lot of changes when bringing on the subs. From then on it was like watching schoolboys vs. seasoned pros.

Liverpool bring on a reserve keeper who cost 3.5mil, we are looking for a midfield maestro for the same money, that shows the financial clout, thanks to TV money, that neither one of the OF have.

I did not see the Tic vs Spurs game but from reading the match reports Celtic were under the gun for most of the game, so on paper it looks like both Glasgow clubs have a long way to go, and going on recent history Liverpool are a far superior squad than the one from White Hart Lane.

You've missed the point as well.

Pre-season matches are all about preparing for the season ahead. Champions Celtic's season starts next Sunday.

Rearrangers' season started on Wednesday last week, and already they have a squeaky-bum match coming up this midweek. Rearrangers are no longer in pre-season.

I wouldn't read too much into your trouncing by Liverpool, it was only a friendly after all, but you'd expect Rearrangers to be a lot further on in terms of fitness than Liverpool, whose season doesn't start for another two weeks.

Anyway, the time to judge the merits of pre-season programmes is after the dust has settled in May next year.

So much anti-Rearrangers from me because I know it winds people like you up. And don't bother to tell me it doesn't, because you wouldn't have asked the question otherwise.

Plenty pro-Celtic stuff from me - look at #35 for a start.

Rearrangers had the season extended for their benefit last season, then tried every trick in the book to have it extended further - despite their supposedly not having asked for an extension anyway.

The extension Rearrangers did get meant Champions Celtic couldn't go to Japan on the 17th May as proposed. We had to clinch the Championship against Dundee Utd on the 18th May instead.

Hope that answers your questions.

Lazy, inebriated journalism... Andrew H Smith, you are a complete and utter tube.

#57: Is that the level of your intellectual debate? By all means question my writing, but try reading it properly.

56 James,,,,,, Don't get all hurt, not being clever, just having a laugh.

It went exactly as I said it would beforehand.
Not pretty, and I predicted penalties.

If Rangers slip up then they will sell Cuellar to make up the difference on the balance sheet, don't expect to see him playing on Tues!

There will be no excuse for us if we slip up, but that's life. Just thank your lucky stars (and Rangers for raising the co-efficient) that you havn't had to go through this qualifying nightmare this season.

The Truth Hurts,

Intelligence is a pre-requisite for an intellectual debate... So you'd better sit this one out, my inebriated friend.

Good grief a Celtic thread opened for comment, wonders will never cease.

Shocking level of incompetence from this alleged journalist, can someone explain the reasoning behind the first part of this story.

Seems that Marc Crosas is coming to our club from Barca, hopefully he will live up to the billing. Also Tamas will more than likeley sign next week, Mr Lawell has done his work again, the man is a genius.

I watched the first half of the game against Spurs and there was nothing much in it to either side, apart from the dreadful pass from Hartley to set up the Spurs goal. Aiden looked pretty sharp, and the set up was not our normall 4 4 2. The game seemed bogged down by both sides in the middle of the park.

#62: I will explain the first part of the story, since I wrote it. I was merely using the fan as an emblem of what happens every summer at Celtic - the bravado, then the frustration then it all usually working out all right.

#59,

Cellar is EPL bound no matter what happens on Tuesday. All you have to worry about now is for how much.

I'll thank Michel Platini for the SPL Champions (that's Celtic) going straight into the group stages. It was him who pushed through the recent changes.
65

Andrew H Smith,

Scotland on Sunday 03/08/2008 16:27:07
#64: Platini's changes do not come into force until next season. Celtic have gone straight into the CL group stages because Scotland were 9th in the co-efficient rankings.
66

James,,

#65,

I'll thank him this time next year then.

Until then, I'll thank WGS for taking Champions Celtic to the last 16 twice in succession, which has also boosted Scotland's co-efficient.
67

Ajax MacKindling,

03/08/2008 16:31:44
64 James,,,,,

You can thank M Plattini all you want, but it's Rangers that got you there this season.

68

Ajax MacKindling,

03/08/2008 16:33:37
66 James,,,,,,,,,

Yup, Celtic have done no harm to that co-efficient, but you should at least be gracious enough to give credit where it is due.
69

James,,

03/08/2008 16:36:10
#67,

Scotland's co-efficient ranking is not down solely to Rearrangers' efforts last season. In fact, I'm pretty sure that Scotland's co-efficient rating will only benefit from your UEFA Cup run NEXT season.

Champions Celtic are there because they are the Champions. Nothing to do with Rearrangers.
70

Andrew H Smith,

03/08/2008 16:37:33
#66: In the piece, I acknowledged quite glowingly the fact that Gordon Strachan has taken Celtic into the last sixteen in two successive seasons. As I said, it's an achievement that borders on the miraculous.
71

Ajax MacKindling,

03/08/2008 16:44:27
69 James,,,,,,,,,
I'm thinking maybe you should check out the facts of that.
72

James,,

03/08/2008 16:45:27
#70,

And you also said they wouldn't have won the league last year if Rearrangers hadn't got to the UEFA Cup Final.

Remind me how many away games Rearrangers won against teams in the top half of the SPL in the WHOLE of last season?
73

Ajax MacKindling,

03/08/2008 16:46:37
70 Andrew H Smith,

Oh come on, miraculous, surely all they did was follow follow Rangers.
74

Ajax MacKindling,

03/08/2008 16:48:18
72 James,,,,,,

If we were so bad, then why was your winning margin 3 points?

(offside goal in the last OF game seems to equal 3 points)
75

Andrew H Smith,

Scotland on Sunday 03/08/2008 16:49:04
Despite being at a massive financial disadvantage to the clubs they beat in the competition, Celtic made it through two years in a row. They are one of only 11 clubs in Europe to have managed this in the last two seasons.

#70,

can you enlighten us as to why the threads are open for discussion on Celtic but not on Rangers and why the first sentence of your article about the inebriated Celtic fan behaving illegally is repeated unnecessarily and is not corrected?

Thanks in advance

No pain at all.
It happens.
Good season for us last year.
I wouldn't complain if we did the very same this year.

#82 again,

I'm sure you were feeling no pain at all when Skippy smashed that shot into the net.

And I'll bet you were so laid back you were almost horizontal when Barry Robson scored the winner!

When will you stop whinging about WGS being so nasty to all you well-mannered and scrupulously honest press boys?
