ASKING for four points from two games against Manchester United is bit like shooting for the moon, but Gary Caldwell has his sights set high.
The defender knows that if Celtic are to keep alive their hopes of reaching the last 16 of the Champions League they need to take something from Tuesday's match at Old Trafford and probably win the return in Glasgow on November 5.

Celtic have nev
er taken a four-point haul from any side in their previous five group campaigns and to do so against the holders would require an almighty improvement, not least in the Scottish side's defending because the Celtic back four have a nasty habit of being found wanting on high-pressure occasions.

Since August of last year, Gordon Strachan's men have played 12 Champions League ties and five Old Firm games. In only two of those 17 games have they kept clean sheets.

"It is not great but that is football," said Caldwell, who needed stitches in a foot injury during yesterday's win over Inverness and will face a fitness test on Tuesday. "We have won games where we have conceded goals. We score goals as a team and we lose goals as a team. People keep bringing up records and statistics, our away form (17 defeats and a draw in 18 Champions League ties] and this and that, but as a player you just get on with it.

"Against Villarreal we were very close to getting a good result. We were unfortunate in the end to lose a goal. We are getting closer and hope Man United will be the time when we get it."

Strachan's confidence in Caldwell has been rewarded with the player's best form for Celtic across the past six months, but the partnership with a struggling Stephen McManus still fails to convince. Weaknesses in the full-back areas patrolled by Lee Naylor and Mark Wilson haven't helped the duo.

Caldwell paired up with McManus when Celtic last played at Old Trafford, in September 2006. Then it was Thomas Gravesen's concession of possession that proved instrumental in a 3-2 defeat.

"It was a great night and a great occasion but, with two-and-a-bit-years having passed, we are more experienced, have improved a lot and hope to be able to show that," Caldwell said.

Celtic could do that and still not prosper since Caldwell and his manager both accept that Alex Ferguson's men are better than they were when defeating Celtic, before losing 1-0 to them in the clubs' subsequent Glasgow meeting.

Whisper it, but Bobo Balde just happened to play alongside McManus that evening.

1 & 2

Are you both eading the same article as I am ?

Caldwell doesn't make a prediction in this one although it reports that he accepts that Man U have improved since the last time the two sides met.

And as for 'getting his head down', I don't thin k there is any player inside CP that can claim to have done so more than he has these last 6 months.

After all the injuries that have surfaced in the last 24 hours, I don't think many Celtic fans will have any genuine belief that we can take points home on Tuesday.

Even with all our starters fit it was always going to be tough, but without Samaras and Jan our chances of getting a goal have gone down markedly.

McDonald is too short to be a lone striker, and although Strachan has said he would be inlikely to pitch Cilian Sheridan in, in the end I don't think he has much choice.

Sheridan hasn't played 90 minutes in months apparently, and has hardly played at all at senior level...gulp!

Caldwell is our best defender, the only one of our back line in whom I have complete trust.

Nevertheless, I am looking forward to the match. Just to be going to old trafford on Champions League business is a fantastic achievement, and I will savour the occassion...I'd rather be in the CL than not in other words.

We will simply have to defend as though our lives depended on it and Boruc will need to be on the form of his life to give us even the slightest chance of taking something ...and add to that a massive slice of luck.

It could happen...stranger things have happened in football, but not many!

Tim

Caldwell's injury has been described as a 'deep' cut on his instep and if the stitches burst then we're having to use a substitution and rearrange things...it seems to me highly unlikely that the wound (as it's been described) will have healed sufficiently in time for Tuesday...I would have thought about a week or perhaps even a bit more than that.

Still , if Caldwell does make it, I'd go along with the idea of him and Hartley sitting in front of the back 4 as you suggest.

Having McDonald or Maloney in the loan striker role however is , to my mind, peeing in the wind.
Man U's back 4 are trained to deal with the likes of Drogba, and quite a few of their EPL opponents come at them in 4-3-3...having Shaun or Skippy up there trying to impose themselves seems to me like a grand old waste of time.

I think we've just been tragically unlucky as regards Jan and Sami. Sheridan is a big strong lad, and he could be coached for playing a very simple role in this match : just try to get your foot on the ball, don't try to turn anyone, just hold it up as best you can and look to lay it off to the midfield.
Despite his questionable fitness and lack of experience, keeping it simple might be the key to using his height and strength which I think we will need to have any chance of scoring.

We need to give Ferdinand and co. something to worry about , and I have grave doubts that either Maloney or McDonald, acting alone, can provide any significant threat.

If Sheridan just tries to hold the ball up back to goal, look for the lay off and then head towards the box, I think he could cope with that.

I assume O'Dee is fit to play? Both he and Cadiz are more than able stand ins for Caldwell. We have to be looking at containing Man Utd, and I'd take a 0-0 draw right now. If we play Nakamura, you never know what might happen if he gets a chance at a free kick.
