DICK HENSOLD
Big Music For Northumbrian Small Pipes
****
Celtic International/ Schubert Club SC127, £11.99
Minnesota-based Hensold is a Baroque recorder soloist, but here his passion for the wee bellows-blown bagpipe is given full reign in new settings of old tunes, and a spread of his own compositions in rich arrangements for harp, guitar, whistle, flute, piano, keyboards and strings. Plus the khim – the Cambodian hammered dulcimer – played by virtuoso Bun Loeung, who died after this recording was made. Old Border hornpipe rhythms mix with Scots airs and novel hybrids in a very musical offering.
