Hamilton Academical 2
(Swailes 47, 55)

Dundee United 1
(Grainger 33)
That's six wins on the trot for Hamilton but more importantly they are in the quarter-finals, for only the second time in 42 years.

"To go a goal behind against a team like Dundee United and come back and win was excellent," said Hamilton manager Billy Reid. "It's a good run for us at the moment. We're not going to get carried away and we're happy to be in the next round of the cup."

Rocco Quinn and Kenny Deuchar received their first starts for Hamilton, who were missing James McArthur through suspension.

James McCarthy was an early menace with a shot deflected wide and another flying over the crossbar.

United got a scare with a goalmouth scramble that ended with teenager James Gibson's poked effort cleared for a corner. Quinn set off on a twisting run and his curled attempt wasn't far away. Cerny struggled with a Craig Conway free-kick but despite the goalie's flapping Hamilton went unpunished.

Prince Buaben dithered on the edge of the home box until McCarthy tripped him up. It was a costly foul. Danny Grainger beat the wall by arrowing a low drive into the far corner of the net.

Hamilton fought back and Lukas Zaluska punched clear a Quinn free-kick. United had a couple of threatening breakaways before the break but it was a single-goal lead they took to the dressing room.

Within a couple of minutes of the re-start Hamilton were level.

McCarthy provided the spark with a piece of brilliance. Out by the corner flag he flicked the ball past Sean Dillon and scampered into the United box. The youngster picked out Swailes with the cutback and the defender transformed into a striker placed a brilliant shot high into the net.

Unbelievably Swailes then put Hamilton in front. Brian Easton swung in a fine corner and there was man-of-the-moment Swailes at the back post to head home. What a day this was turning out to be for Swailes and what a turnaround for Hamilton.

Their substitute Richard Offiong could have sent them further ahead but Zaluska blocked the threat. Then the United keeper was denying Easton as Reid's energised team heaped pressure on the stunned visitors.

With his side trailing, Levein sent on Francisco Sandaza and Danny Swanson. They had quarter-of-an-hour to help keep United in the cup.

The chasing team got in a tangle over the taking of a simple free-kick. The signs weren't good for the Premier League's third-placed club.

Then Wilkie was denied by Cerny who blocked a close-range header with a leg. "The goalie's gone the wrong way but it's hit his heel and stayed out," said Craig Levein. "These things can decide matches."

Towards the end, the ball was mostly in Hamilton territory but the men in red and white got behind it and did the job of keeping United at bay.

The home fans sang the praises of their favourite McCarthy as United won a last-ditch corner kick. Conway took it and, of all people, Zaluska got the header but Hamilton cleared their lines and the final-whistle sounded.

Levein shook hands with Reid and patted his counterpart on the back. No hard feelings then, but great emotions for Accies who reached the last eight. The United manager dismissed the notion Hamilton are his bogey team.

"We've been a little unlucky. Today was a hard match. We played well first-half and should have got a second goal. I'm not too disappointed with the way we played."

Racist chanting from the Dundee United fans towards Jamie McCarthy.

What a cesspit this small-minded little country really is.

I didn't go to this game, normally, i go to almost all of them. However, i'd heard about the, frankly, stupid songs that united fans were singing today. If this was the case, then it's terrible and i'd like the dimwits to either b*gger off or shut up. Stupid little sh!ts

I was more concerned about the nonsense that was being sung about Billy Reid and Jocky Scott.

McCarthy will have his cross to bear for his ill-advised decision to reject his country for another.
He has been brainwashed, just like the minority singing IRA songs at the Coop Cup semi-final (I was there and also watched the re-run on Celtic TV).

Lets not forget, Celtic are a Scottish club, with proud Irish roots, like me and many of the supporters. However, we should not become ghettoised.
We are Scottish, and should be proud to wear the Lion Rampant on our chest.

Racist - since we are the same race than that is laughable.

Moronic chanting by the United fans? - definitely.

Unfortunately the first poster here matches this with a typical knee-jerk reaction by less cerebral folks with nothing better to do with their keyboard.

You expect sectatrian chanting from the Old Firm and Motherwell fans, but to hear it from Utd was surprising to say the least. Maybe the tangerine tops are becoming orange in the wash. Someone from Utd should speak out publically about this before it tarnishes your club's good reputation.
Accies response was "are you Rangers in disguise", which says it all.

As a United season ticket holder I am very upset to hear reports of racist behaviour by Utd fans....However if he was being barracked fro shoosing Ireland over Scotland that is not racist...unacceptable and daft BUT not RACIST!!!

I agree it's not racist and just daft and best ignored. Strange thing though it seems that these accusations of racism are only challenged when it's not Rangers fans singing the songs! One rule for some and another rule for others. I'm sure John Reid will have something to say about this outrage.

another great day at the office for the real hoops as far as the chanting against young McCarthy goes it was really only to put him of his game but it never works for it gives him more determination to win as far as the playing for scotland or ireland thing goes it would be best if the complainers checked out the story of scotland knocking him back as he was not good enough for them shows you how much they know he had already played at under 17 level for ireland and if i remember right under 19 also before scotland through their tupence worth in to cause all this agrevation for james McCarthy

SOFBTRC,

Far, far from Glasgow 08/02/2009 16:31:31
To Accies fans reading this story:

The vast majority of United fans are absolutely disgusted by the songs coming from a small minority (but still a large enough group) of our supporters yesterday. Despite the fact that those sorts of songs are commonplace at one particular ground in Glasgow, there is no excuse at all for Dundee United supporters, or for any other decent supporters from other teams in Scotland, to be referring to players as "tattie-munching b******s", or worse. There was booing directed at those "fans" from the United support during the game, and I think you can rest assured that if we hear any more of that sort of rubbish at future games, those responsible will be pointed out to stewards and police right away.

Just like most other clubs, Dundee United has a small number of followers who are not very smart, who are not very mature, who drink too much and who think too little. Hopefully you can judge Dundee United by how the vast majority of the fans react to this sort of behaviour from a minority.

Good luck in the next round.

James,

I was there yesterday and was ashamed about the Jocky 'Fritzl' and Billy Reid 'paedo' chants more than I was about the 'James McCarthy' song.

I wouldnt report them to the stewards, but if thats going to be tpical of the away squads mentality, then it's home games only from now on.

out of 2500 United fans a couple of hundred were involved, but thats 200 too many.

its nice to see united fans commenting about the chanting about Jocky Scott Billy Reid and James McCarthy our match against Motherwell will be worse so not to worry if James from Dundee thinks the united support was 2500 he is far from mistaken it was large enough maybe 1600 pushing it
