THANKS to council collections and recycling centres, it's now easier than ever to keep our waste out of landfill. But before you pat yourself on the back, consider this: only a small proportion of the two billion Tetra Pak cartons used each year in the UK are recycled. Could you be doing more?
A post at www.greengirlsglobal says, "It's now easier to recycle Tetra Pak! Tetra Pak has invested £1.2 million to support local authorities in setting up recycling and collection facilities for its cartons. Visit www. tetrapakrecycling.co.uk to find
out about provisions in your area."
An alternative is to minimise Tetra Pak usage, as suggested by a post at
www.timesonline.typepad.com eco-worrier: "Drink orange squash instead. You create less plastic waste."
When it comes to shopping sustainably, it's pretty hard to avoid getting some plastic packaging in your trolley, and it seems that only a small proportion is suitable for recycling. But here's a hint of optimism from
www.recycle-more.co.uk: "Plastic recycling is changing as the technology changes. It may be that you can now put them in with the rest of your plastic recycling – or at the supermarket? Keep checking."
A blogger at
www.dailymail.co.uk says it's not up to us: "The supermarkets will get the message if they are left with the waste. Leave your packaging at the till, if you dare!"
