RENOWNED for his gritty play and commitment to Celtic, Peter Grant was one of those players who was regularly described as a "heart-on-his-sleeve" type. No player gave more for the cause, not least when he gave a man-of-the-match performance in Celtic's 1995 Scottish Cup final victory over Airdrie, in which he played with an injured knee.
His avowed passion for the club he supported from childhood drove Grant on, and though he was never classed as a silky superstar and was only capped twice by Scotland, the midfielder's courage and drive – his sheer heart – made him a hero to the Park
head fans.

Yet it was a cool, calculated, cerebral decision to walk away from Celtic in 1997 that ultimately led to his return to the club earlier this week as part of new manager Tony Mowbray's coaching team. In a true case of head winning over heart, Grant left Parkhead just as the Henrik Larsson era began, the then manager Wim Jansen having begged him to stay.

An older, wiser Grant revealed the truth behind his decision to leave Celtic – a mysterious move which baffled fans at the time. It was simply that having been a fixture in the team for so long, he could not face the inevitable decline as a player. He was then aged 32, had always wanted to play to his mid-thirties, become a coach and stay in football, and he knew that would not happen at Celtic.

"I'd agreed to go to Wolves but I'm still waiting on the call from Mark McGhee," said Grant. "Seriously, I think (Wolves' chairman] Jack Hayward had pulled the wool over Mark's eyes and said he wasn't making any more signings after I'd agreed a deal. I'd already returned from Celtic's pre-season. We played Parma in a friendly and Wim offered me three years but I couldn't have handled not playing which might have been the case by the time of the second or third season. I'd have been pulling my hair out.

"I'd made my mind up to go. I always remember Wim saying it took a brave man to make a decision like that. He'd done the same in Holland when he joined Ajax after being at Feyenoord.

"We played St Johnstone in the Cup and the fans were chanting my name. Jock Brown said to me Norwich had been on the phone, and he thought I wouldn't want to speak to them. But I told him I did. Raymond Sparkes (his agent] took me down – no flight, nothing – and I arrived in Norwich about 1am to meet Mike Walker. I signed the next morning. I phoned my wife Lorraine and said I'd signed for Norwich and she said 'I thought you were signing for Wolves'."

Speaking at Celtic's sumptuous training centre in Lennoxtown, Grant recalled one aspect of his former days that he won't miss – the old Barrowfield training ground and the daily attempts to poison the squad by youths, perhaps not of a Celtic persuasion, setting fire to tyres on a nearby dump.

"It's different from the 10 o'clock tyres fire at Barrowfield," he said. "We'd see the boys saying 'right, that's them started their jog, let's set it on fire now'. Then there would be all this black smoke and you'd be coughing as you were running and they'd be waving to you. You see people running about with masks on now because of swine flu – we'd have needed them to stop inhaling the smoke."

Now 43, with spells in coaching at West Ham and West Brom either side of his year-long stint as manager of Norwich City, Grant is adamant that he's learned from his experiences – "now I think before I go mad," as he puts it.

To coin a phrase, Grant was always Celtic-hearted, but it will be his mind and that of Tony Mowbray which will determine the club's immediate future. He knew his mind in 1997 and was proven correct in the long term. Celtic's fans will hope his thinking is right this time too.

i was glad to have heard tom english on bbc radio..at least it confirmed his "neutral" stance..his article on mowbray today is the typical tabloid wind up..a few paragrphs on the betrayal of wba fans ..which question mowbrays integrity.....im sure mr english suitably condemned "walter" for being tapped up by rangers and walking out of scotlands euro qualifying campaign...mr english is either biased or on the wind up..either way is a poor excuse for journalism...

Cosmos much as I agree with everything you say, there's no point in posting on this site anymore. The likes of Pundit thegersfan/Brian Daillyman and KLM/Ninny just report it all to the mods. I got banned just because my name was Irish ffs!

The threads are dead because most Celtic fans are fed up with the discrimination shown to them. It's obvious they have lost interest with the way the mods operate against them.

Might pop in from time to time, but my opinions and those of many other Celts are more likely to appear in other fairer media sites where Celtic fans actually have a freedom of speech.

Meanwhile on this site it will just be the same old bias anti-celtic journalism, foul mouthed bigots and petty minded individuals who can't take any sort of criticism or participate in any normal debate.

Sad to say, but hey that's Scotland's shame.

Is that a fact?

"my opinions and those of many other Celts are more likely to appear in other fairer media sites where Celtic fans actually have a freedom of speech."
Would that be some of the more, ahem, "celtic-minded" sites, perchance?

"petty minded individuals who can't take any sort of criticism"
Er, I think that might describe you pretty well

If you could only listen to yourselves. Never mind Scotland's shame (yawn), you lot are the shame of the entire human race.

You will have to let us know how you have the ability to prove that I am one of the posters who got your posts red carded. You live in a world where if you say it here online it must be true.

I will admit that I times I been stubborn with an opinion that I may have, but will try to see the opposing viewpoint. I will admit when I have been wrong, and do not like to see a certain types of debate on the threads.

You TM do not like being pulled up and proved wrong, and will invariably wander off into another topic to wind other posters up.

I have told you repeatedly I have never reported any of your posts or your pal. But think what you will, as objectivity does not come easy for you.

A lot of posters myself included have made an e*se of themselves at various times on the threads, but most of us on reflection can admit it. Others cant or wont.

If a tic supporter I would probably feel as you do.

The big men at the top at Parkhead painted TM as the saviour, more able to relate to the tic support than WGS, and as a man of impeccable integrity.

What English said in regards to the end of WBA season when the players were asked to show loyalty to the club and along with TM help them get back to the EPL as soon as possible, seems from what I have read to be fairly factual.

Both TM and WS decided that a better opportunity lay away from their previous position and chose to move on.

Strange that players are not slighted for wanting to move on and improve their financial lot in life,(Naka as example) yet we all seem to slag bosses for doing the same thing.

If posters are able to come back with their banned names, why do posters change their user names after being banned?

#13 glad you can see a certain slant inmr english's article..i was genuinely shocked at how biased he was on radio scotland...he was one who thought walter was strong for banning macgregor and ferguson..and then strong for changing his mind...whereas the sfa were weak for doing the same..d'oh...a bias clown im afraid..x

Did not hear him on the radio. Most of the press football reporters have a bias to one team or another in Scotland.

You would never have to ask Ronnie Culley(sp) of the Times what side he supports. And its the same for the RFC supporting reporters. lol

#18 to be fair there seems to be a general rule that many of the "rangers" pundits are blindly loyal and very rarely are critical..(dj and hateley spring to mind who my rangers supporting friends find cringible due to that very fact..) and celtic pundits put the boot in..wee charlie anyone..
but tom english's stance seems to go beyond supporting ra gers..but at least it puts his rantings in context..but quality journalism ..at least they are all in danger of losing their jobs..no tom didnt even part with my 75p today for your rag x

Bg Mowbray is just exactly what Celtic are in need of. Strachan was just what we needed when O'Neil walked out. Things were so bad at that point that Mowbray mightn't have been well suited. If we imagine it as being an overgrown garden when strachan came in....he then got it looking neat and tidy, but in the end, a bit on the bland side...but he mabey did for Celtic what John Smith did for the labour party, and Big Mowbray will apply the final masterful touches as did tony blair to lead us to a landslide victory in the coming title race.

Mowbray has the bones of a good team that needs only 4 quality additions to transform it into a bit of a belter...2 strikers, a centre half and a left back....if mowbray can fill these positions with good players, the Celts will be absolutely on fire.

You seem to know the details of TM contract, does anyone know if WS had a clause written in his contract that he he could move onto greener pastures should the opportunity arise.

Yes Naka completed his deal. most people had thought the reason he did not want to renew with the tic was he wanted to be close to home with his family. Had the tic known he was going to go to a Spanish club 9 months ago and not home, do you think they may have thought about selling him?

I do not want to get embroiled in a slanging match as I have bigger fish to fry (watch predictable pundit try and be clever with some ASDA fish joke). But seriously I have better things to do and will be only popping in occasionally.

My points were made in Post 2. I stand by them 100%.

#6 Your bigotry know no bounds, but you have to live with that burden.

#11 Pundit, you have even admitted reporting posts as unsuitable - so no more lies please. I know you are a reporter. And as for the "job done" and "owned" garbage, well let me say I'll leave Private Pike to sort you and your pettiness out. He's got your ticket, the rest of us just riducule you as though you were a village idiot and you have yet to prove otherwise.

Finally to my old mate Brian Daillyman. I don't know what possessed you to post attacks on people why they were lying fast asleep last week. Then when they woke up and responded you took the huff big time. But I think you have learned your lesson and I hope for your sake you keep to football.

On the topic - Peter Grant will be brilliant for Celtic. A great professional and Celtic man through and through. The new regime will succeed and they should as well. Celtic since 2000 have the edge on Rangers on many fronts - financially, fan base, size of stadia, sponsorship and expectations/standards. There are no excuses for not winning the title and I expect under Mowbray the domination will continue.

Yes cosmos it is only a website, last week (and for a long time) I have not used any insults or offensive language in the debates. Last week I was only offering advice and a little education (ie links and pasted copies of factual info) My only crime last week as going off the subject - and I hold my hand up I was guilty of that one a few times.

Meanwhile, the like of Ninny and Lafferty's Mullet were throwing in dogs abuse and commenting on Mowbray's physical appearance as if that matters much.

But both Brian and Pundit started getting snidey and when they were losing the arguments went to the mods and got the posts deleted - even though they were not offensive.

So one asks oneself - what is the point of debating with these types when the mods clearly pander to their every whimper.

Celtic fans on here tend to get a rougher deal than any other fans. I can only assume there's bigotry at work to deny Celtic fans a voice.

It is sad, but once we all go elsewhere, this forum will end up being like the Evening Times messageboard -dead as a dodo.

You can come back with the same user name - simply put another character in your name - ie. a comma, an apostrophe or a full stop. I have had numerous variants of Tim Malloy.

Todd and TM

As for responding at a late hour last week, there is a 5 hours time difference, so posting at approx 9pm will catch most UK posters sleeping. All I did was respond to some posts that TM made in which I was mentioned, and I did say he told lies in some of his posts. The thread was closed down before I could post, thats why I replied on another thread that was open.

I"ll gladly take what any poster says, on these forums and not go running to the moderator as TM said I did.

And TM the mod was not pandering to me, both of us had all our posts removed, tell the WHOLE story, we both had all our posts removed from the thread.

Good god almighty.

That 2nd post was without doubt the best laugh i have had in ages.Well it was the best since 23rd May when Boyd scored the 3rd and title winning goal but i digress.

Too many home truths and lies being exposed on here and they act like cry babies with a petted lip.

Your real "Celtic Mindedness" is now shining through for all the world to see.

Bet you even hate the fact you are "Protesting" as it's too close to that word Protestant.

Keep posting such inane drivel as it merely enlightens my day.
