Derek Riordan opens his heart on his Celtic hell

DEREK RIORDAN believes the only way he will get the opportunity to prosper at Celtic is if he outlasts Gordon Strachan. The frustrated former Hibs striker says the situation has reached stalemate, with his manager so concerned with protecting his own credibility that he is unwilling to risk giving him an extended run in the team.
"I only get chucked on if we need a goal so he must think I can get him a goal but he obviously doesn't want to do it unless he really has to because he doesn't want me to prove him wrong. He knows I would score quite a lot if he played me as much as
he has played the other strikers but I don't think he wants proved wrong," says Riordan. "When I speak to him, he's nice to me and says all the things players want to hear about me being part of the plans but you know by his actions that he's talking rubbish.

"It is frustrating. I was left out the squad (against Motherwell yesterday] and was training with the reserves on Friday. I've virtually chucked it at Celtic, what's the point when I'm not getting a chance."

Signed in June 2006 after his 64 goals in 146 appearances caught Strachan's eye, the striker was considered one of the brightest homegrown prospects. Voted Scottish Young Player of the Year by his peers the previous year and handed his first full Scotland cap against Austria by Walter Smith, he was confident he could cement a place in the Celtic starting line up. While the champions enjoyed a wealth of attacking options in Maciej Zurawski, Kenny Miller, Craig Beattie, Stilian Petrov, Shunsuke Nakamura, Shaun Maloney and Aiden McGeady, and added Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to the squad as the 2006/07 season got under way, Riordan says he was assured he would be considered for more than a role in the chorus line.

"I went there thinking I was going to play. It's not like I just went there for the money, I wanted to play and I thought I would do well at Celtic with the amount of chances that teams like Celtic and Rangers create. I thought I would score a lot of goals and if I was given the chance every week I still believe I could. But I've just never had the chance."

A player at the end of his tether, he feels he has wasted two years of his career and the situation has left him feeling depressed and humiliated. Especially when he is sent on in the final minutes of games against his old club. An 89th minute sub against Hibs earlier this term, he said he was hurt. "That was a kick in the teeth. That was embarrassing. I did well when I was there and some of the Hibs fans said I shouldn't go, so that was embarrassing, but it's always the same, it's the last few minutes if I do get chucked on."

He says there are times he does regret leaving Easter Road. "You see loads of other young players getting in the Scotland squad and everybody has gone ahead of me so it's very frustrating. I'm not being big-headed but I was one of the well-known ones at Hibs because I was doing so well and scoring so many goals but now you see all of them, they are the ones who are playing every week and in the Scotland squads and it's annoying. Depressing.

"I feel let down by the manager. I remember him sitting in my mum's house trying to sign me and he said I could play anywhere in his midfield or up front. It was the same in the press conferences but now I can only play left midfield for some reason and that's not even my best position.

"I have a year left of my contract in the summer but I can sign a pre-contract in December. I'm 25, I want to be playing. It will just depend if the manager is still here or who else comes in. I'll see who the next manager is before I decide. I don't want to be here and not playing but I would like to stay at Celtic if I thought I had a chance to play. I know I won't get that chance with him. I've been here nearly two years and it's not happened yet so I don't see it happening now. But Celtic are brilliant. I like it here and would love to prove myself but the nasty thing is not playing."

Fully aware that his career has stalled, he says the most upsetting aspect is that he is still at a loss to explain why. Compared to the other six strikers who have vied for the two forward berths during his period at Celtic, his goals to minutes on the park ranks him ahead of Zurawski, Miller and Beattie and only marginally behind Vennegoor of Hesselink and McDonald, who have had the luxury of extended runs in the team in a central striking role, while even Georgios Samaras has had more starts since his arrival in January than Riordan has enjoyed all season. Sitting in amongst the Celtic support at Ibrox last week – denied a place on the bench because he had a day off after his grandmother passed away – he was buoyed by their comments. "They were saying 'you should be out there playing' and that helps. The Celtic fans have been brilliant. They know something is not right. They are the only people I will thank at Celtic if I leave."

Something certainly seems awry when a club fails to score in four consecutive Old Firm games and draws a blank in four of their last six games, yet still doesn't include one of the club's form strikers in the squad. "Willie McStay was saying that I'm now top scorer in the reserves but to be honest it doesn't seem to really matter how well I do while the gaffer is at Celtic, I just don't think I will get in the team anyway for some reason. I don't know what it is. Everybody is always wondering what it is and I can't tell them because I don't even know myself. There have been loads of rumours, I'm supposed to have slept with his daughter or sister or punched him on the training ground but they are all a load of rubbish. There's nothing that I can think of I've done wrong to him. There's been no bust ups. I don't know what his problem is with me."

But there is, undoubtedly, some issue unresolved. Since joining Celtic, the player has made just 13 starts and 19 substitute appearances, amounting to a meagre 1,036 minutes of first-team football. So inexplicably out-of-favour Only An Excuse ridiculed the situation in a sketch with Strachan choosing between a blind man, a granny, a drunk and Riordan. The drunk got the nod.

"What was really hard was when we won the league last season and I didn't feel part of it," says Riordan, who made just enough outings to earn a champions medal but didn't feel he had earned it. "And the Scottish Cup final, when I didn't get on, I didn't feel part of it when we won. That was the biggest kick in the teeth because when we played Hibs in the last game of the season, I played up front with Craig Beattie and scored our only goal but the next week in the cup final Craig Beattie got on before me. I didn't even get on yet I'd scored in the game before it. Explain that one to me."

In the semi-final of the competition, against St Johnstone, Strachan was booed by the Celtic support when he took Riordan off. It offered him some solace at the time but he now fears it backfired. "A lot of people have thought that was one of the worst things that could have happened, they think he's not playing me because of that. He doesn't want to look like he is giving in to people.

"The thing is I don't mind being behind guys like Aiden McGeady, because Aiden has had a brilliant season but with other players, he just doesn't seem to change the team. They are all supposed to be big star players and that's what bugs me. Even if they play rubbish for three or four weeks on the bounce, they still get a game. The only ones he really does change are Massimo Donati and Paul Hartley."

Having bided his time, the player says he could be ready to throw in the towel. "But that doesn't matter because they are not letting me away. I don't understand why. They got me for near enough nothing, I think it was £170,000 and clubs have offered to pay a lot more than that so they would make money on me. Why not let me go instead of me wasting away in the reserves. What's that about?"

Prepared to leave in the January transfer window, the £400,000 offer tabled by Burnley was rejected by the Parkhead club, leaving the player even more downbeat. While reports suggested the club had made the decision based on finances – apparently seeking a fee closer to £1m – the forward was told it was a football decision and that he would be needed in the title run-in. Since then he has played just six minutes, sent on in the vain hope of salvaging the Scottish Cup quarter-final replay last month.

One suggestion is that the player's off-field antics have annoyed Strachan but Riordan argues he has kept his nose clean since December 2006, when he was charged in relation to an assault on a pub steward. "And I was found not guilty so that proved a point. I've not done anything wrong."

The other theory is that, like Kris Boyd, another goal-getter, the player doesn't contribute enough in all-round play. Quizzed pre-season about Riordan's projected involvement, Strachan said he didn't need convincing that the Edinburgh lad was a good player but hinted that more was required. "He has ability and talent. But it was Gary Player who said that he did a thousand press ups a day and ran up hills. When he was a kid he had talent but he enhanced it. There are people like that with talent and there are people who enhance it. There are a lot of good players here and that's why everyone needs to prepare properly, do everything right and take no chances."

It is an area of discord, with some close to the player claiming it unreasonable to expect him to improve on his weaknesses without the kind of coaching that helps born attackers embrace defensive nuances. "My game is about scoring goals. The bad part of my game is defending but it always has been and it was when I was at Hibs. He would have known that from watching me and he still signed me and said he thought I could play for Celtic. But I think I have worked hard since I went to Celtic. I think I work a lot harder than I did at Hibs. I have done everything I can to impress him."

Matters have reached a denouement following the death of both grandparents within the space of a month. On both occasions, Riordan took the following day off to be with his family and was left to languish in the stand come match day. "It just gave him another excuse to leave me out the squad. That's the way I see it. He did it when my grandad died so I expected it again last weekend." To stave off such an outcome he did consider going in but was too upset and decided in the end that his family had to come first. "I don't know what he expects. But it was just one day and it seems to be fine for other players to miss out on a day's training and they actually get put in to play the games."

Over the past two years, he has learned he is apparently subject to a different set of rules. Yesterday, as his team-mates attempted to get their title bid back on track, Riordan was away getting his hair cut. There was a time when he was considered a cut above his peers, now the disheartened talent is on the periphery, pulling the stuff out.

More points dropped and a team more interested in public bickering than getting on with the job in hand of catching Rangers. WGS doesn't have the gravitas or respect to hold this group together. Celtic are unravelling fast.

Never mind, I'm sure Gordon Smith, the SFA in general, referees and pretty much anyone else loosely associated with the game is to blame.

I Know that most comments made by the unhappy fans "quite rightly" never reach the ears of the Manager .... But I'd be Gutted if Gordon listened to those fans Who've played 1 too many games of football-manager & if Their ceaseless prattle forced Him to reconsider & walk away ....

Gordon's taken Us from the despair We felt after Our last minute capitulation to Motherwell several seasons ago, to winning the league twice in a row & getting Us into the last 16 twice in a row & winning 2 cups along the way ....

He did this with the Players HE chose & brought in, whilst reducing the wages bill & getting rid of the old war-horses & lowering the over-all average age by 10 years ....

Gordon, Peter & co have gathered together the Finest Young Talent in the Entire Country, which bodes Incredibly well for many seasons to come, whilst leading the Club to a record stable financial footing .... He won 2 leagues against 3 rangers managers in a row .... (4 if You include the rangers manager who stood in for the 1 day they got gubbed against St. Johnstone ....)

Perhaps beating 3 rangers managers in a row in only 2 Years isn't enough for Some all-too-Vocal & thankless people, but it's good enough for Me & it's Still Possible to win This League too !!!!

The very Vocal so-called "Supporters" have lost All touch with Reality & Their "Gratitude" for what the wee Man has "Done" for Us ....

I believe that unfair disgruntlement has put an untold pressure on the reigning Champs & Our Manager & the fans Only really have "Themselves" to blame if that's worked it's way through to the player's equilibrium & composure in front of formations which are 10-0-0 most of the time, which They trot out on the other side of the City week in week out so often it's being Booed on & off the park ....

Mo Camara saw His last game for the club when He was held responsible for Us being unable to beat Dunfermline Who left Their 18 yard box Once in the full 90 minutes to beat Us 1-0 at home ...
7

Brad McAnn,

06/04/2008 00:54:08

We play "The Celtic Way" & if You don't get LUCK then very often a BRICK WALL defence of 11 chancers CAN last for an hour & a half & frustrate even the Best of teams .... I'd like to see a CLOCK start a count-down of 30 seconds when any more than 6 defenders are in Their box .... If They Refuse to budge then a penalty should be awarded to the ATTACKING team ....

You can't win Them all & to BE a Supporter You MUST Support The Bhoys Win lose or draw .... NOT Whine & turn Your back on Men Who've Done so much in so little time for You .... With the restrictions that have been put on Gordon it's Gob-smacking that He's managed to do so much so quickly ....

Hindsight is 20-20 & We can now See that dear Gordon should've rested Our top striker against the likes of St. Mirren etc to keep McDonald hungry & raring to go .... But then the fans would've complained about not playing Him .... So when You can't win with the fans off the park, then it's no surprise to me When We stop winning on it ....

We've got a Great Team & can hold Our Own with the best in Europe, We've faltered too much domestically this season, whilst Our nearest rivals have been getting an easy time of it, but there's All Still to Play for & We CAN Still Win this League ....

The Moral of this tale is, to be a Successful manager You MUST ignore the fans .... And I for 1 am indebted to Gordon for everything He's achieved Here in this short period & I also LOVE IT when He treats the media the way They DESERVE to be treated ....

God Bless Gordon Strachan & co, the Bhoys & All the Lisbon Lions still Gracing Us with Their presence ....

I've Said since the start of the season that the corrupt Iain Blair's "secret" computer which "fixes" the fixtures should be Out in the Open, the way the draw for the Scottish Cup is .... Alas Celtic's fixtures have been tinkered & tampered with all season to Our detriment & rangers favour .... Believe it or not !!!!

HAIL HAIL !!!!
CHAMPIONEES CHAMPIONEES !!!!

Deek, you should never have left the holy ground! like the prodigal son, you are welcome back, take a 3 year contract (just so we get something for you next time you leave) put yourself back into the shop window and get back on track. Hate to say, told you so! they (celtic) have stolen the best years of your footballing life, deprived Scotland of one of the best prospects for years and for what? to deprive Hibs of your services.
After this interview you will be back cleaning boots, come home Deeks! Shop, Window, First team football, Scotland call ups again?
You know it makes sense!

And soap will become the "Norm" again!

Ritchie, Murray, Miller, Johnston, Webster, Rae, Thomson, Wright, Pearson... join the club for players who take the cash and ignore the precedents. Couldn't happen to a nicer lad too. Next expected member... Come on down Alan Gow and "My Ibrox Hell!"

Meanwhile McFadden, Gordon, Naysmith ignore the OF fluttering their eyes at them and head straight to England, enhancing their international careers in the process. There's a lesson here somewhere...

He may be a "ned from Pilton" but he's a ned that can score goals for fun given the chance, he may or may not need a good slap to waken him up, but deserves a chance to prove himself again,

Now you manky lot can get on with the mud slinging, I'm off to bed,.

at game today and could not believe strachans decision making. hartley dropped - why ? samoras dropped why ?
malcolm sent off 53 mins - why did we still keep 4 defenders on till 5 mins to go ? is strachan planning to destroy another young players career ( hutchison )by only bringing him on with 5 mins to go. my advice to riordhan would be to stick around until arrogant little idiot is sacked, and we appoint a half decent manager who knows a player.
incidently talking of young players why was caddis dropped from the team for playing well ?? do you need to play s**t not to get dropped ???

I watched Celtic the last two years, and Riordan always looked good during the few chances he got. It's a total mystery why he hasn't been played. It has to be something personal--there can be no other explanation. All this rubbish about his personal life is just a diversion by those who won't admit a grave error has been made by leaving him out. Even if it were true, and I don't believe it is, is every other player on Celtic a saint? I think not. Celtic have struggled now for two years to score goals, even when they were winning. Who can explain why a natural goalscorer is left to warm the bench, and sometimes not even get on the bench? What a dreadful waste of a young player.

WGS is in my opinion losing it. The conduct of yesterday's game was bizzare! Needing a goal, he waits until near the end to put on another forward! And, unbelievably, yanks Hinkel!

He's done a lot in the previous two seasons. He was paid well for that! He hasn't done sh*** since November. We can have loyalty to the team, but we can never have loyalty to a manager. It's all about results and WGS isn't getting them!

He will be gone! Hopefully soon! Yesterdays results don't count!

#56 - Well if he is indeed back it does show that dreams do come true.

You have to admit its not the best day for you chaps - a whole feast of headlines at which to roundly kick the sh*t out of all & sundry at Darkheid. Evidently you agree as you've resorted to the old "dignity" defence - i await the usual perennial accusations of bigotry etc as you flounder yet further!

Oh Happy days!!

Good dignity there.

As at Ibrox, work has already begun on the extension to the trophy room. Huge as it already is, more room required for all they cups.

Extra staff to be employed to keep them shining.

Is there a down-sizing at CP?

Moira has excelled herself. To take Deek's grunts and turn them into words and then sentences shows wonderful skills.

As for Deek's predicament. All I can say is 'teehee, ha, ha, ha, get it up ye, ya wee thug, ned"

Transfer him, but not to Edinburgh please. Plymouth preferred.

If he can't rot in hell yet, let him rot on a bench somewhere far far away.

I must say that Celtic are a remarkably retro club.

Not only going backwards on the field but also in the stands.

Fighting, oh how seventies, in all four stands between those of differing views of WGS. Now where's my kaftan?

Fell asleep for a while after celebrating Rangers winning the league and woke up to a deluge of no postings. Where are these girls. Rasko etc you must be reading but not posting. Walter can now I hope give Barry a rest today. Give Gow a game. Maybe Fleck. These guys may be diamonds so give them a chance. Big Dereck Johnstone was 16 when he outmuscled the Celtic defence. And that was when Celtic had one. And meanwhile good luck to all the British, Anzac, Canadian, American, Holland, Indian, UAE, Egyptian, Belgian troops who are trying to stop the flow of drugs from Afganistan. Being Scottish is a privilege and being a Rangers supporter at the same time is almost too much to handle.

Celtic had money and a platform that was five years ahead of Rangers.

And whilst they were winning it seemed like it would go on forever. The Celtic fans praised Lawell and accused Mr Moonbeam of false promises, which now seems embarassingly shortsighted. The most worrying thing for Celtic fans must be the fact that WS has not even completed a season at Ibrox yet, which means his plans are not even off the ground yet. This current Rangers side appear to be the best TEAM they have ever had at Ibrox. They ALL play for eachother, sometimes its ugly but it works. If they win today, its 9 with a game in hand, and that is a disgrace as far as Celtic are concerned. And that 12, could become 18 by the time Rangers have played the 2 games at Celtic Park.

Come back home deek.

Money is in the bank and you've had a long enough rest on that bench or in the stand.

Your talents shouldn't be lost to Scottish football just because of that wee shat.

Come home, you know it makes sense.

Wonderful how many 'fans' here post with absolutely no regard to the article. Children, the article is about Derek Riordan.

And on that, #10 has it right. The Old Firm love weakening the opposition by pinching young Scots for knockdown prices, playing them in the reserves then punting them on for a profit a year or two later due to the clout 'Rangers or Celtic player' adds to a transfer value.

For those Hibees saying Riordan could come home, you can't afford him now. That's not being snidey, but he's on near £10k a week as I understand and wee Deek isn't the sort of lad to take a substantial pay cut I'd hazard.

Riordan has been harshly treated by a manager whose tactics are fairly regularly shown up to be naive. Add him to the list on #10 and we're nearing a team of Scottish talent snuffed out by the OF.

A good Championship club will hopefully pick up Deek come June.

Shame...his celtic hell...I suppose the wages make it easier, Deek...
You could always ask for a tranfer...or go on loan....No, then you wouldn't have the superstar lifestyle and ego...I hear Arbroath are interested though....
Incedible the number of fans who attach no blame or self interest to the player

Riordan is a decent player. He'll no go back to Hibees though - they can't afford him. He'll be off to someone like Norwich or Plymouth.

Could still play a big part for Scotland in the world cup - he might not like playing wide left, but he's good at it. And if that numpty from Ayr Utd gets a game (can't remember his name - went to Wigan, then Derby now in the Championship) - then Deeks would start every game for me.

The referee from yesterday will probably never work again.
I mean after all, isnt it true that ALL referees are against Celtic? lol
He sent of a motherwell player and tried to help Celtic. Oh dearie me, they cant be having that can they?
So if the Celtic fans are right, then this ref will never work again.
lmfao

On the bright side for Celtic, Dundee United will probably beat Rangers 2-0 today.

Norman,

Scottish football doesn't need the likes of Riordan languishing on the bench, or wasting his time in the reserves. I'm pretty sure it's Strachan not wanting to look weak that's keeping him out the team. Being single-minded is fine when you're winning but if you can't change your approach when struggling it looks a major deficiency.

If you have a team that can't buy a goal, and they keep a natural goal-scoring talent off the pitch then you have to wonder. If there are non-footballing issues, then let them be known, but it's totally inexplicable why he's not playing.

oh no...having to laugh at LOLtic...again.

Riordan is a good player ruined by Strachan, who lacks a lot in man management skils IMO.

Strachans biggest problem is his apparent lack of nous in the transfer market. Too many big names/big money buys have failed to do the business. He has dodged bullets with the media who have yet to ridicule his flops publicly in the same way they did Filip Sebo.
81

Jo Jo,

Interesting to note that you can comment on all the games from yesterday bar one....The Celtic result.
Does Lawwell or the fans who moderate the board want to stop the world from laughing at how garbage their team has become.
Are they censoring bad news as always.
We should be told of course but we won't.

I returned last night at 20.10 hrs on the thread "Smith hints at Exit if criticism continues" Here's what I posted

----------------------------------------------------

Evening all,

Yes I have gone back on my word and come back.

I have returned for a few reasons.

Firstly to apologise to all those I ever offended on here, I admit at times I was OTT. I would like to apologise especailly to Forbesy and Bemused Exile as I did take it too far and it was too personal with you guys.

Onto the football, I think it is Rangers title now. I hope and pray for a miracle but it's unlikely. And in all honesty, Celtic in the last few months haven't really deserved to retain the title.

Rangers have staged a remarkable revival and good luck to them in Europe. I agree with some of the other posters they could be more pleasing on the eye, but as a Celtic fan that might in fact make things worse.

Anyway all the best to you guys.

And to Pax, I am pleased to see you are still here and not retaliating to that sad guy ranting on about the Torbett Child abuse case. He really is a very sad man. As a practising Roman Catholic I will indeed pray for him as he does sound in a desperate way.

Interesting to see that young Derek now spends his football matches at the hairdressers. As a Hibs player he was well known for his bad taste in hairdos. At Celtic he plays second fiddle to Maximo Doughnutti, both on the playing field and in the bad hair stakes. Time to move on Deeky, the Ginger Whinger will never play you.

Senseless Sid, this article, at least, smacks of dignity. Shame about your warped rhamblings.

Wail, wail !

Riordan's a decent player. A talent yes. But he has many flaws in his game such as;

Poor work rate

No physical strength

No real pace

No heart (courage)

No natural position (he's a bit of a maverick)

Lack of consistency - in the reserves he can look brilliant or pathetic.

He really has to take a long hard look at himself and start applying some real professionalism. Believe it or not but Gordon Strachan is actually doing him a favour. I don't know if Riordan has the intelligence to see this. Starchan did the same with Maloney and McGeady - both responded and both have become much better players as a result.

If Riordan responded to Strachan's excluding him, in a positive and professional manner I have no doubt he would feature more. The ball is very much in Deeks court - let's see him do something about it instead of moan and groan like a little lost puppy.

Well this season may end trophyless but at least we can still sing the great Willie Maley song...

And they gave us James McGrory and Paul McStay
They gave us Jimmy Johnstone, Murdoch Auld and Hay
Yes all of the football greats
have passed through the Parkhead gates
To play football, The Glasgow Celtic way

And they gave us Charlie Tully and wee Lubo too,
They gave us Tommy Burns and Henrik who scored a few
And now Aiden's on the ball
We're all still walking tall
Cos Celtic are the finest club of all

And they gave us James McGrory & Paul McStay
Seven one in the Sun and the 25th of May
Yes the bhoys of the old brigade
Play the game the way it should be played
To make us proud Celts in every way

Incorrect. I am not asking that question. I am asking questions like:

Have Rangers got the bottle?

Have Rangers got the legs?

Can Celtic win every game?

Will Rangers struggle at Fir Park, Pittodrie, Easter Rd, Tannadice and Celtic Park?

But my biggest question is Can Celtic win every game? Somehow I think we can. But I doubt we will. I expect Rangers to drop points but I think they have done enough...just.
